2 Part 1: JOB PROFILE 1 MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: To develop, maintain and grow the MS Society s campaigning community, producing tailored communications to increase the impact of our campaigning goals. 2 POSITION IN ORGANISATION: Head of Policy & Senior Public Affairs Officer Senior Policy & Officer Senior Policy & Officer Officer Policy and Researcher Policy and Researcher Policy and Intern (3 months) Post holder works closely with the Policy and team and other teams, including: Operations Directorate (particularly local staff in the four area teams across England and Volunteering), Web team and Head of New Media Communications team Membership and Database Teams Volunteers in the campaigns network - - 2
3 The post holder will also be expected to work with individuals and organisations external to the MS Society such as other professional bodies, health and social care professionals, and sector colleagues, where relevant. 3 SCOPE OF JOB: 1. Project manage national campaigns 2. Support, engage and inspire campaigners at a local level 3. Ad hoc projects 4. Administrative support 4 DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY: To represent the MS Society at external meetings and branch events and to make decisions at these meetings in accordance with MS Society policies. 5 QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS LEVEL: Person Specification Qualifications Graduate qualification or equivalent experience Experience Essential Experience of working in a campaigning and/or lobbying environment Experience of writing for a range of audiences and using different mediums to produce convincing, clear and succinct content e.g. blogs, e-actions, web and print Experience of working with digital and social media Experience of working with administrative systems Desirable Experience of using HTML Experience of volunteering or working alongside volunteers. Experience of working with website content management systems Experience of digital copy writing Experience of engaging with diverse groups within a campaigning context - - 3
4 Skills: Essential Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to draw out the most salient features of complex issues and debates Ability to work well in a team Ability to work on own initiative Ability to adapt quickly to new technical software packages Ability to use website content management systems (CMSs) Good organisational and work load management skills The ability to build good working relationships both internally externally Demonstrates tact and diplomacy Project management skills Proficient with all main Microsoft Office packages Knowledge Essential An understanding of e-campaigning and why this is important. Awareness of how a policy proposal moves from development to implementation Desirable Has knowledge of health and social care and or welfare benefits systems in the UK Understands the principals of writing for the web - - 4
5 Part 2: MAIN DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Project manage national campaigns (40%) To work with the Senior Public Affairs Officer and wider team to plan written communications to the Network To write content that is tailored and targeted, delivered in a timely way to maximise impact To support the co-ordination and dissemination of campaigning communications across the UK (where appropriate) and to have clear processes and mechanisms to do this To liaise with the Web team, the Database team and Membership to disseminate and market campaigns communications to maximise reach, impact and messaging Lead on using Engaging Networks e-campaigning software and ensure the software represents good value for money To work with the media team to assist them in securing media coverage in support of our campaigning objectives. To set targets for online campaigning activity and deliver regular evaluation reports and updates on campaigns To produce an annual impact report evaluating the effectiveness of the Society s campaigns activity and improved outcomes for people with MS Identify potential working relationships and partnerships for the society to advance its policy and campaigning goals 2. To support, engage and inspire campaigners at a local level(30%) To work with local teams to identify those branches or groups of volunteers who are actively campaigning and proactively engage them in campaigning To research and disseminate campaigning best practice through a variety of mediums, including the website, blog, and members magazines To work with people affected by MS, MS Society staff and other professionals to develop content for campaigns material. Mobilise members of the public and supporters to take action to support the Society e.g. lobby of parliament To work with the Senior Public Affairs Officer to ensure the campaigns network continues to grow in strength. To attend local branch and regional meetings and other events to present and or discuss policy and campaigning with people affected by MS - - 5
6 To design and carry out campaigning presentations for local MS Society branches and volunteer groups To implement systems and processes to ensure that people with MS are involved in the society s campaigning and lobbying activities. For example, parliamentary meetings, parliamentary receptions and political party conferences To support the development of a new volunteer campaigning role 3. Ad hoc projects (15%) To undertake special ad hoc projects such as: - Researching material for parliamentary briefings and meetings. - Being responsible for organising internal and external campaigning events. - Sit on cross-organisational project groups and carry out the associated work as the policy and team s representative, eg for the society s annual awareness-raising MS Week - Leading on elements of the society s involvement in party conferences, for example fringe events and exhibition stands 4. Administrative support (15%) To be responsible for updating the website pages. To manage the mailbox by responding to enquiries from supporters, providing an excellent customer service To develop and maintain manual and electronic filing systems for key policy and campaign topics, ensuring that information is readily available. To liaise with the database team to ensure the society s campaigners database is maintained and that processes are efficient. Other Duties The post holder should be prepared to attend MS Society meetings in different parts of the country including MS National Centre. Some meetings may be during evenings or weekends. Mandatory Criteria: The post holder will be working in a developing environment and he/she will therefore be expected to undertake other appropriate duties as required for the effective operation of the MS Society.
