1 itunes, ipods, and Podcasting Begin Use itunes to manage all of your video and audio files for your classes. This program is free for both Mac and PC users. Visit itunes Store and go to itunes U (University) and search what is available from various Universities. Look for useful media that is FREE. Back in the itunes Store home find podcasts When in podcasts find education and then K-12 search out useful podcasts Make a playlist, give it a name and select various songs for the playlist. Look for more things that are free in itunes. Now that you know what a podcast is and what it does become a podcaster. Garageband 1. Open Garageband from the dock. (guitar icon) 2. Chose Create New Podcast Episode. 3. Give it a name and click create. 4. You only need to know a few buttons from the Garageband studio. o Click on the Red button to begin recording your voice. o Use the Triangle button to start and stop playing. (you can also hit the spacebar to start and stop) o Click on the eyeball to get the sound loops chose your loops drag to a track. 5. To change the sound levels in your tracks click on the Triangle in the track controller.

2 With these simple steps you can record your voice and add music and sound effects. Remember all sound clips are objects; they can be deleted, copied or pasted. A few more useful buttons and choices from the Menubar. 1. If you want to split a sound object into two parts, Select the clip and it will be highlighted. Place the playhead, the red line with the triangle on top to the point of splitting and then go to Edit Split in the Menubar. In the example above you would be splitting the sound object, Male Voice, in two by selecting Split from Edit in the Menubar. (Note: after splitting both clips will be selected, click anywhere off that clip to un-select and then select the part you want to move, trim, delete, copy, etc.) 2. To add pictures to the podcast, which I recommend you do last, click on the Podcast track.

3 3. Next click on the Scissor button next to the Eyeball button. This will open up the area to set your markers. Using the Add Marker button list to your podcast and hit Add Marker at each point where a picture should appear. At each Marker you will get a chapter and a place to Drag Artwork. 3. If you need to add pictures or sound from iphoto or itunes just hit the button with the Musical note and film clip that is seen below.

4 Expand your Podcast: General Advice 1. Write out a script or find what you want to read because you want to put your words in first. Record in small sections or read it all and cut it up later. Hit the Red record button to start recording and to stop recording. Don t worry about pauses or mistakes you can change it all later. Note that when you hit the record button to stop the play head keeps moving, I find this annoying but it is useful if you just want to hit record again and resume talking. You can use the space bar to start and stop the play head. 2. Once you have all your voice recorded you can cut and clip the pauses or umms by moving the play head to where you want to cut your clip and then select, File Split. This will cut the clip but both parts are still selected. Click off that clip and select the part you want to move, trim or delete. Remember, you must always select the clip you want to edit first so that Garageband know what you are trying to change. 3. Click on the eyeball to get the sound loops. Pick an intro sound and then illustrate your podcast with sound effects. Remember the sound affects work just like you voice clips. These clips can be split, volume changed, copied and pasted. They can also be moved and deleted. Use as many tracks as needed. If you need a sound from your itunes music click on the icon with the musical note and film clip on the right of the control panel, this will open the media center that includes itunes and iphoto. Just drag tracks from itunes to a track in Garageband. 4. To add pictures to your podcast. a. Click on the top track, the Podcast Track b. Click on the scissor button next to the eyeball button. c. You will see the Episode Artwork area, the most important button is Add Marker. d. Listen to your podcast from the beginning and click Add Marker where each picture will be placed. e. Each time you click, a chapter is made were you can drag your images. Note: you can get pictures from iphoto, the Internet or by using the Shift-Apple-4 command that takes a snapshot of whatever you select on the computer screen, a most useful tool. f. Place all your pictures and save your Garageband document. 5. When you are all finished with your podcast and it is saved, simply go to the Menubar to Share-Send Podcast to itunes. This will compressed all track into one audio file and place it in your itunes Music Folder where the itunes application finds all your audio files. Now you are ready to move this file. Moving your Podcast to FirstClass 1. Open FirstClass and click on your Web Page authoring icon. This is the same button you click to make any changes to your FirstClass Web page.

5 2. Select the top folder in the left field, this should be your Web Publishing folder. The Menubar will change so that you can choose New Web Page. 3. Chose New Web Page from the window select Podcast and then OK. 4. Now select the new Podcast at the bottom of the left field and then click New Episode. Follow the direction in the window that appears. 5. Your podcast info will appear in the new Podcast Window. If you want to add album art click on the Edit Podcast Details and more choices will appear. 6. Check you website to make sure that everything has appeared properly. People can now hear your podcast by downloading the file on your web page and listening with itunes or perhaps other players. itunes is sure to work and it is available free to both Mac and PC users.
