GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR GROUTABLE TILE FLOORING RECOMMENDED TOOLS AND MATERIALS Landscapes Safety glasses Measuring tape and square 100 lb. Floor Roller Utility knife Chalkline Adhesive Trowel (as per adhesive manufacturer s recommendations) Primer Embossing leveler/floor patch (if necessary) Other tools and materials may be required depending upon the substrate Landscapes must be installed with adhesive using the direct glue down method. Landscapes can be installed with or without an acrylic based grout. The Beaulieu retailer and the customer should determine at the time of selection if grout will be used. ACCLIMATION Acclimation is a required procedure prior to installation of Luxury Vinyl Flooring either on the "job site" or in "similar job site conditions". Store the UNOPENED BOXES in the room where the floor is to be installed for at least 48 hours prior to installation. HVAC systems must be on and set between F ( C). SUITABLE SUBSTRATES Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring can be installed on most existing floors including but not limited to APA (The Engineered Wood Association) approved flooring grade underlayment, PVC and concrete floors, existing solid resilient that is well bonded (no more than one layer), ceramic tile, terrazzo, marble, quarry tile. All carpeting and padding s h o u l d be removed. Make sure that the surface is clean, dry and f l a t within 3/16" in 10 feet. (4.76mm in 3.04m). Supporting floors must be rigid as too much deflection can result in a failed installation. Luxury Vinyl Flooring can also be installed over radiant heated substrates that will not exceed a maximum floor temperature of 85 F (29.4 C). Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring should not be installed over existing plank floors, existing cushionedbacked vinyl flooring, asphalt based floors, carpet, self-adhering plank or tile, laminate or other floating flooring, structurally damaged concrete, or unprimed gypcrete and adhesive residue. Page 1 of 6
SUBFLOOR PREPARATION Caution: If you plan to remove old resilient flooring material or any type of old adhesive, please be aware that it may contain asbestos fibers or crystalline silica; therefore, avoid creating dust. Inhalation of such dust is a cancer and respiratory tract hazard and local regulations may require professional removal. Instructions for the removal of old flooring materials and adhesives may be found in the RFCI Recommended Work Practices for Removal of Resilient Floor Coverings. You may contact the Resilient Floor Covering Institute at or Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Dry Back products should be installed with Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring Plank and Tile Adhesive following the specific installation instructions on the adhesive label. Please note the specific trowel size that is required as well as the open time noted for porous and non porous substrates. Substrates must be free of contaminants such as dirt, grease, wax, oil, paints, varnish, curing sealers and compounds, old adhesives, solvents and other foreign matter. Strip existing floor if necessary. The surface should be flat within 3/16 in 10 feet (4.76mm in 3.04m) using the appropriate materials to level the substrate. All construction seams, expansion joints, and holes should be filled level with the surrounding surface to eliminate telegraphing of such irregularities. For more information see Patching & Leveling section. It is recommended that all moldings such as wall base and/or quarter round be removed for best results. Any looseness of the substrate must be secured. Beaulieu recommends the use of floor primers on all porous substrates. Maximum deflection of flooring is 3/64. PATCHING & LEVELING Use only cement based patching and leveling compounds. Check with patching and leveling compound manufacturers for curing times. Check moisture levels before starting installation to ensure moisture levels are within guidelines outlined in the Concrete Slab section. Note: Priming the substrate or adding latex to levelers will normally make the floors NON- POROUS. Test for porosity and use the non-porous adhesive instructions if necessary. The contractor or owner is responsible for cure time, moisture content testing, adhesive bonding and the structural integrity of any leveling or patching compound used. EMBOSSING LEVELERS When installing over an existing resilient flooring material, an embossing leveler may be required to prevent the existing material pattern from telegraphing through the new material. Embossing levelers are for sheet goods with textures that could telegraph through the LVF and be visible on the surface. Note: Existing resilient flooring should be in good condition, thoroughly bonded to the substrate, and all waxes and or finishes should be removed before applying embossing levelers or adhesives. Page 2 of 6
CONCRETE All concrete (new and old) must be tested for moisture and ph levels. Concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 3500 psi. Moisture vapor e m i s s i o n r a t e should not exceed 5 lbs./1000 sq. ft. /24 hours per ASTM F-1869 Calcium Chloride. Moisture may also be tested according to the test method ASTM F 2170 using the in situ probes; when tested according to internal relative humidity RH shall not exceed 75%, ph levels should be between 5 9. IF MOISTURE IS PRESENT, DO NOT INSTALL FLOOR, corrective measures must be taken. Do not install when hydrostatic pressure or alkaline conditions are evident. New concrete should be properly cured. Beaulieu recommends that all porous substrates be primed for best results. EXISTING RESILIENT FLOORS When installing Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring over existing resilient flooring ensure that the existing sheet good or tile product is in good condition, and that it was installed in the full spread method and is properly secured. Beaulieu s LVF can be installed over one layer of non-cushioned sheet good flooring. It may be best to remove the present floor and prepare the structural floor for a fresh application of the Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring. Existing tile or sheet resilient floor should be stripped using an approved stripper to remove wax or other contamination and rinsed with clear water and allowed to dry. This is also the case when new sheet vinyl is used. Very smooth or high-gloss floors need to be lightly abraded to rough up the surface to allow proper adhesive bonding. MARBLE, QUARRY TILE, TERRAZZO, CERAMIC TILE Properly cleanse substrate using a commercial degreasing / dewaxing solution. Grind or abrade any highly polished or irregular surfaces. Fill any low areas, c h i p s and g r o u t j o i n t s that may telegraph through the new flooring. Test for porosity and use the appropriate adhesive application method. Bond tests are required. WOOD SUBSTRATES Wood floors must be a minimum of 5/8" (16 mm) thick APA approved grade tongue and groove plywood or 23/64" (9 mm) OSB, free from spring and deflection. Wood substrates must be flat within 3/16 in 10 feet (4.76mm in 3.04m). All fastener indentions and joints should be level and smooth using appropriate patching compounds. Wood substrates are considered porous and all wood substrates should be primed for best results. Radiant Heated Floors Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring may be installed over embedded radiant heated floors provided the operating temperature never exceeds 85 F (29.4 C). The system must be in operation for three weeks prior to installation of the flooring. The system must be kept at 65 F (18 C), 48 Page 3 of 6
hours prior to and during installation. Once the installation is completed, the heat must be gradually increased by a maximum of 5 F per day until the desired setting is reached. PRIOR TO INSTALLATION Carefully check flooring material for any defects. Contact your supplier immediately if any defect is found. Undercut doorway moldings to the thickness of the flooring (if applicable). Remove thresholds and baseboards. Cartons must be stored horizontally at all times. Protect carton corners from damage. INSTALLATION To square the area to be covered, first find the center of one end of the main rectangle. Locate the same point at the other end wall. Snap a chalk line between these points to mark the center line on the floor. Then measure along this center line to find the middle of the room. Figure 1 At the center point, mark off a line across the room at exactly right angles to the first line. This may be accomplished by the triangle method as shown in Figure 1. Then measure 4 feet toward one side of wall from the center point. Then measure 3 feet from the center point along the opposing center line. Then measure from the 3 foot mark on the center line to the 4 foot mark on the opposing center line. This should measure exactly 5 feet. If the measurements do not come out exactly 5 feet, the center crossing lines are not at a true right angle. For larger rooms, multiples of the above dimensions may be used to obtain greater accuracy. ( or , etc.). Dry lay a row of tiles from the center line to the side wall to determine the space left for the last piece. If the last piece is less than half of a tile move the starting point over so that the end tiles are no less than 9 inches wide. Repeat the same procedure lengthwise for the opposing direction. (This can readily be figured out from the room dimensions without putting down the tiles if desired). Page 4 of 6
Figure 2 If it is decided to have the center row of tiles straddle either or both of the center lines, additional lines should be snapped on the floor half of the tiles width on one side of either, or both center lines as required (See Figure 2). Beaulieu requires using Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring Plank and Tile Adhesive for the installation of Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring Planks and Tiles. The subfloor should be scraped clean of old adhesive, and thoroughly swept before applying adhesive. The full spread adhesive application method is required for Beaulieu glue down products following the instructions on the Luxury Vinyl Flooring Plank and Tile adhesive label. Take care to place tile as accurately as possible without sliding them into place. If grouting tile please leave appropriate space between the tiles following the Grout Installation directions on the grout label. Beaulieu recommends the use of an acrylic grout. IMPORTANT Be sure to use Beaulieu tiles of the same color lot for best color matching. Mix tile from several different cartons to blend minor shade variations. Landscapes is a directional product with arrows on the back of the tile. It is important to determine with the end user the direction the tiles should be installed. Beaulieu recommends the quarter turn method. Landscapes can be installed with a grout joint or butted tightly together. All flooring should be rolled with a minimum 100-lb roller after installation. Use a hand roller in areas not reached with a 100-lb. roller. Use proper floor protectors under the legs of furniture. Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring is intended for indoor use only. Beaulieu Luxury Vinyl Flooring is intended as a floor covering only. Post installation temperature should be maintained between F ( C). Relative humidity should be maintained between 40% and 70%. Protect installation form direct sunlight. Avoid exposure to long periods of direct sunlight. Close blinds or drapes during peak sunlight hours. Floor covering subjected to excessive heat and light is subject to thermal degradation. Use appropriate precautions to minimize potential effects on the floor covering. Flooring that cannot be protected from direct sunlight is required to be installed with adhesive. Failure to install this LVF flooring with Beaulieu approved adhesive when such flooring will be exposed to direct sunlight voids all warranties, express or implied, the end user shall assume full responsibility for any failure of Page 5 of 6
the flooring, and Beaulieu shall be released from any claims, damages, or liabilities whatsoever arising out of or related to the failure to install the flooring with approved adhesive when the flooring is exposed to direct sunlight Follow the Beaulieu Care and Maintenance Guidelines to properly care for your flooring. These can be found at beaulieuflooring.com/usa or by contacting Technical Services at or Installation failures due to the non compliance with above instructions are not the responsibility of Beaulieu and warranties will not apply. Whenever questionable surfaces are involved, Beaulieu recommends a bond test. Please note this document may have been revised and updated.
