Greenhouse Gas Numbers This paper provides greenhouse gas emissions data from up-to-date independent sources. All greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions numbers below are expressed in carbon dioxide (CO)-equivalents. 1 Seventeen Major Anthropogenic Greenhouse Gases According EPA, the major GHGs emitted by human activity are CO, methane, nitrous oxide (NO), sulfur hexafluoride (SF), and thirteen other fluorinated gases. The figure below shows the relative contribution of these GHGs to total U.S. GHG emissions. U.S. GHG Emissions, 1 CO (%) Methane (9%) NO (5%) Fluorinated Gases (%) U.S. GHG Emissions Totaled.7 Billion Tonnes U.S. GHG emissions totaled.7 billion metric tons (tonnes) in The electric sector contributed one-third of the total; transportation pg. 1

percent; industrial sources percent; commercial and residential sources 11 percent; and agricultural sources percent. (See figure below.) U.S. GHG emissions Electricity generation (33%) Transportation (%) Industry (%) Commercial/residential (11%) Agriculture (%) U.S. CO emissions from fossil-fuel combustion totaled 5.1 billion tonnes in Electricity generation contributed.17 billion tonnes, or about percent of domestic CO emissions. CO emissions from U.S. coal-based electricity generation totaled 1.7 billion tonnes in 11 and 1.51 billion tonnes in 1. CO emissions from coal-based electricity have decreased by.7 billion tonne, nearly percent, below 5 levels. 7 CO emissions from natural gas combustion for electricity generation totaled.1 billion tonne in 11 and.9 billion tonne in 1. CO emissions from gas-fired electricity generation have increased by.17 billion tonne, nearly 55 percent, above 5 levels. pg.

Global GHG Emissions Totaled 5 Billion Tonnes Global GHG emissions totaled approximately 5 billion tonnes in. These figures from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change appear to be the most recent data available for global emissions. 9 Global CO emissions from fossil-fuel combustion totaled 3.7 billion tonnes in The chart below compares relative quantities of GHG emissions. U.S. coal emissions represent less than 3 percent of global GHG emissions. GHG emissions, billions of tonnes/year 5 Global GHG () Global Fossil Fuel CO U.S. GHG U.S. Fossil Fuel CO U.S. CO from coal CO Emissions Trends for Fossil-Fuel Combustion CO emissions in most developed countries -- especially, the U.S. and Europe -- have declined or remained stable since. By contrast, CO emissions from China and India have increased by almost 17 percent and almost 9 percent, respectively, since. The charts below show fossil-fuel CO emission trends for the U.S., China, India, and Western Europe. 11 pg. 3

U.S. fossil-fuel CO emissions, billions of tonnes Fossil-fuel CO emissions, billions of tonnes (prelim) U.S. China India Western Europe 1 CO equivalent (CO-e) means that tonnes of non-co GHGs are converted to the equivalent number of tonnes of CO based on their global warming potential (GWP). For example, the GWP of methane is 1, which means that 1 tonne of methane emissions is equivalent to 1 tonnes of CO emissions. U.S. EPA, Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: , April 13. pg.

3 GHG emissions data are typically expressed in metric tons (tonnes). One metric ton (tonne) is slightly heavier than a U.S. ton (sometimes called a short ton ). 1 tonne equals approximately,5 pounds, whereas 1 U.S. ton equals, pounds. 5 U.S. DOE and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center, accessed July 9, 13. U.S. Energy Information Administration, Monthly Energy Review, June 13, Table Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Fourth Assessment Report: Climate Change 7; data are for. The IPCC is expected to update its emissions data in 1. 1 U.S. DOE and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center, accessed July 9, pg. 5
