2 The California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Foundation requests applications from and nominations of accomplished, entrepreneurial leaders for consideration to be the Foundation s Executive Director. THE UNIVERSITY CSUDH is an urban university in the 23-campus California State University system, located in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County in Carson, CA. The University is committed to improving the lives of its students and enhancing the economic and social well being of our community, the state, and the region. Its 346-acre campus is situated in the historic Rancho San Pedro, the oldest Spanish land grant in the Los Angeles area. The campus is strategically located in the heart of a major technological, industrial, and transportation complex in Southern California. The area includes the massive Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach Southern California s gateway to international commerce. Cultural, performance, and sports venues in downtown Los Angeles are about 15 minutes away and the South Bay beach communities are a few minutes away to the west and south. The StubHub Sports Center, a 125-acre sports center developed by AEG and home to Major League Soccer s L.A. Galaxy, is located on the CSUDH campus. With an enrollment of approximately 15,000 students, CSUDH is a federally recognized Minority-Serving Institution as well as a Hispanic Serving Institution and is among the most ethnically diverse universities in the nation. CSUDH is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission and offers 45 baccalaureate degrees, 24 master s degrees, and a number of certificate and credential programs. While continuing to emphasize the liberal arts and sciences, the university offers professional programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Eleven programs hold accreditations from national professional associations: business administration, clinical sciences, computer science, education, health science, music, nursing, occupational therapy, public administration, special education, and theatre arts. The University is known for excellence in teacher education, nursing, psychology, business administration, and digital media arts. CSUDH is also a national leader in distance education, with ten academic degree programs and seven certificate programs offered online. In addition, the University has recently received the prestigious All-Steinway School Designation. 2

4 THE CSUDH FOUNDATION The CSUDH Foundation was established in 1968 as a non-profit self-supporting 501c(3) auxiliary organization for the purpose of promoting and assisting the educational mission of California State University, Dominguez Hills. A multidimensional enterprise, the Foundation employs nearly 700 people to perform a variety of services throughout the campus community, including the oversight of commercial operations, such as the bookstore, on-campus food service and catering; post-award management of grants and contracts for the University; and the fiscal administration for numerous University programs, including the University s Philanthropic Foundation, the Loker Student Union, and the Associated Students Incorporated. In addition, the Foundation plays a pivotal role in advancing the University s publicprivate land use and development. The Foundation returns a portion of revenues generated through these programs to aid the University in achieving its educational mission. The Board of Directors, consisting of students, faculty, administrators and prominent leaders from the surrounding community, governs the Foundation. The Executive Director is the Foundation s Chief Executive Officer and serves at the pleasure of the Board and the University s President. THE POSITION The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer for the Foundation and reports operationally and administratively to the University s Vice President for Administration and Finance/Chief Financial Officer (VPAF/CFO) and works in partnership with the University VPAF/CFO to align Foundation priorities with the strategic goals of the University. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall operation and management of the Foundation and serves at the pleasure of the CSUDH President and the Foundation Board of Directors. The successful candidate will possess an entrepreneurial mindset; model sound business practices, be highly collaborative, and promote a collective vision to ensure the development and continuous improvement of all aspects of the Foundation s auxiliary services. Responsibilities for the Executive Director include the following: 4

5 THE POSITION (continued) General Administration and Management Responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Foundation. Leading staff in the development and implementation of short and long range plans and other activities that align The Foundation with University vision and mission. Partnering with the VPAF to establish and advance real estate development and acquisition strategies, generating maximum benefit to the University. Overseeing the financial management of the organization, including the development of the annual budget for Board approval, and prudently managing the organization s resources within budget guidelines according to Foundation and CSU policy and current laws and regulations. Promoting the programs and services of the Foundation to the University and local and regional agencies, organizations, and general public, including service on local community boards and committees. Supporting Foundation staff to provide a robust, customer-first culture that prides itself on quality service. Overseeing the development, implementation and fiscal management of Foundation operations while providing a fresh perspective that assists in innovation and trends that effectively serve its customers. Overseeing design, delivery and quality of support and services to the University customers served. Maintaining a culture which attracts, retains and motivates a diverse staff of top quality individuals. Maintaining official records and documents and ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations. Ensuring adherence to bylaws of the corporation and the operating agreement between the University and the Foundation. Ensuring an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, in place. Effectively managing the human resources of the organization according to authorized personnel authorized personnel policies and procedures that conform to the Foundation, University and CSU Policy and current laws and regulations. Maintaining effective risk management/insurance programs. 5

6 THE POSITION (continued) Board Administration and Support Supporting operations and administration of the Board of Directors by advising and informing Board members, interfacing between Board, Staff and the University, and supporting the Board s oversight of the organization. Communicating with and providing information, advice and counsel to the Board of Directors and its committees in the creation of policies, programs and strategic direction of the organization, and informing the Board on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it. Playing a lead role in ongoing Board cultivation and development, including the identification, recruitment and onboarding of new members. Serving as a key leader to assist the University in advancing its goals. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The University seeks a strategic-minded leader who possesses an entrepreneurial mindset, models sound business practices, is highly collaborative, and promotes a collective vision to ensure the development and continuous improvement of all aspects of the Foundation s services. He or she will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge of business and finance functions in a complex higher education environment. A collective vision to consult and work cooperatively with all constituents of the University. Demonstrated experience and success in public/private real estate development and management. Knowledge of philanthropic activity at the University level as well as fundraising policies, procedures and regulations. Knowledge of grants and contract development and administration, including federal, state and private funding agency regulations, requirements and guidelines. Commitment to being supportive of faculty, staff, and students and the academic mission of the University. Knowledge of general retail and commercial business operations and management in a complex multi-unit program. Demonstrated experience with budget development, cost accounting and fiscal policy. Familiarity with organizational management policies and practices including human resource policy and procedures, and payroll. Rooted in guiding principles of transparency, collaboration, fairness, and professionalism. Ability to communicate effectively and to earn and maintain the trust and cooperation of faculty, staff, students, and Board of Directors. 6

7 THE POSITION (continued) Minimum and Preferred Qualifications A Bachelor s degree and/or an advanced degree in Business or a closely related field is preferred; however, an applicant who possesses equivalent years of work experience in a related field will be considered. Ten years of progressively responsible administrative management is required, preferably with at least with five years at a senior level position in higher education. Knowledge of the role of 501(c)(3) non-profit corporations within a university environment preferred. Employment - Compensation - Benefits Employment of the Executive Director is with the California State University, Dominguez Hills Foundation. Compensation for this position will be very competitive. This is not a State of California position. Employment benefits include a 403(b) defined contribution plan, health plan, dental plan, life and disability insurance plan, vision plan, tuition reimbursement, a generous vacation program, and sick leave.
