From Voice over IP to Voice over Internet Juha Heinänen

From VoIP to VoINET VoIP replaced wires in PBX and PSTN backbones with IP preserves the traditional, centralized telephony service model usage via PBX phones connected to LANs VoINET turns telephony into a normal, peerto-peer Internet application telephony service becomes decentralized same telecom applications on any Internet terminal Juha Heinanen 2

VoINET Drivers and Enablers E.164 numbers in DNS (ENUM) finding out if callee can be reached over Internet Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) IETF standard for VoINET plus much more High penetration of broadband Internet enough bandwidth and QoS for VoINET WLANs and dual-mode mobile phones Juha Heinanen 3

ENUM Database Maps E.164 numbers to URIs using DNS => E.164 number is converted into DNS name: => e164.arpa URL is stored in NAPTR record e164.arpa. IN NAPTR 1 1 "u" "E2U+sip" Can also be used to implement NP => tel: Juha Heinanen 4

Example of ENUM Query Get NAPTR e164.arpa Where to route call to ? Not found (Number is in PSTN) tel: (Ported to another PSTN number) (Ported to Internet) Juha Heinanen 5

Session Initiation Protocol IETF signaling protocol for setting up and closing down dialogs Identifies users with phone numbers or style URIs Implements personal mobility Has been extended for event notification and instant messaging Has obsolated ITU H.323 protocols Juha Heinanen 6

Reachability Example Invite tutpro.com Proxy Server tel: tel: Juha Heinanen 7

Registration Example phonex.anywhere.com Identity: Authentication username: jh Authentication password: xxxxxx REGISTER sip:tutpro.com To: Contact: tutpro.com Proxy Juha Heinanen 8

Internet-Internet Example phonex.anywhere.com Invite tel: Local Proxy Enum DB Invite Invite tutpro.com Proxy Invite anywhere.com Juha Heinanen 9

Internet-PSTN Example Local Proxy Enum DB Invite tel: Invite is offline tutpro.com Proxy Invite pstngw.com PSTN Gateway Juha Heinanen 10

PSTN-Internet Example Call PSTN Switch Enum DB PSTN Gateway Invite PSTN switch has to make ENUM query! Invite anywhere.com tutpro.com Proxy Juha Heinanen 11

WLAN Roaming Example VoGSM Outside Hot Spots 'Hot Spot' VoINT over WLAN in Hot Spots REGISTER sip:tutpro.com To: Contact: tel: GPRS/GSM Internet REGISTER sip:tutpro.com To: Contact: Juha Heinanen 12

Enterprise VoINET Example Soft Switch & tutpro.com Proxy NAT & FW Internet ENUM mapping * => Juha Heinanen 13

3GPP Multimedia Architecture IP Multimedia Packet Switching TE MT UTRAN R Uu CAP Iu Iu Applications & Services Iu SCP HSS Gr EIR Gf SGSN MGW Mc MSC server Mh Cx Gc Gn Gi Legacy mobile Network R-SGW Ms CSCF Nb Nc Mr MRF Gi GGSN Mw Gi Mg Mc CSCF Mm MGCF MGW GMSC server Gi Mc Multimedia IP Networks T-SGW PSTN/ Legacy/External T-SGW Implements closed, mobile operator controlled services using IP protocols, instead of providing mobile IP access with QoS to services on the Internet. Circuit Switching CAP Applications & Services CAP D HSS C Mh R-SGW Signaling Interface Signaling and Data Interface Juha Heinanen 14

What Is Wrong with 3GPP? services are mobile network or even operator specific roaming agreements are per operator per service (does not scale) the only driver is milking of the cow as many times as possible results in closed, expensive, and slowly developing market Juha Heinanen 15

3GPP Roaming Example User A P-CSCF I-CSCF S-CSCF A's Home Network I-CSCF User B Visited Network I-CSCF B's Home Network Both A and B end up paying high, faked international roaming charges for no added value I-CSCF S-CSCF Juha Heinanen 16

All IP Mobile Architecture Mobile IP Radio Access Network Internet Content & Services Juha Heinanen 17

SIP Roaming Example Call A Enum DB Internet => Registration DB tutpro.com Proxy REGISTER Contact: IP at Visited Network B Visited Mobile Network Enum Query SIP Signaling Media Juha Heinanen 18

SIP IM Example B A MESSAGE From: Call me when you can! Internet SUBSCRIBE From: Event: Presence tutpro.com Proxy NOTIFY From: Event: presence Online MESSAGE From: Call me when you can! IM Server Juha Heinanen 19

Show Me the Money no money can be made per VoINET call or per Internet IM customers are willing to pay for mobile and fixed Internet access Quality of Service and security outsourced Soft Switch and SIP Proxy PSTN GW services trying to lock customers artificially into expensive walled gardens will backfire Juha Heinanen 20

Conclusions Internet becomes third technology for implementing traditional telephony service ENUM and SIP turn centralized telecom services into p2p Internet applications access independent communication operators now have the last chance to start offering open VoINET services otherwise Spyke et al. will have it all Juha Heinanen 21
