2 PRESENTATION "At the present moment, plastic and visual artists have established a fruitful dialogue with textile art, and have made a fusion of a variety of techniques and processes, contributing great richness on all sensory levels from the tactile all the way to the visual. These gather both old and new fiber manipulation techniques, where ancestral techniques and a new aesthetic paradigm fuse together generating a textile morphology quite distant from the woven tapestry. A panorama is presented, whereby past and present are linked, experimentation of evolution takes place, and transformation of artisan techniques are all molded into a contemporary art concept: what we know today as textile art." Six biennials have taken place to date: two in the United States, one in Venezuela, one in Costa Rica, one in Argentina, and one in Mexico. (Image: Marco Avilés Herrera) The Biennial goals are to: Strengthen, encourage, and promote artistic manifestation of contemporary textiles at local, national, and international levels. Provide an experiential event one of a kind in the Americas bringing together creators and their artworks of textile art with the public at-large. Create a sensitive audience toward this cultural and artistic manifestation. Strengthen solidarity ties among artists from all over the world and the local public. The 7 th WTA International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art will take place during the month of October 2017 in Montevideo, Uruguay. In general, the 7 th WTA Biennial will not have a required theme for the artworks but instead will operate with the underlying concept of DIVERSITY, which establishes a double connotation, giving artists the freedom to approach contemporary textile creativity from diverse contexts and concepts. On the other hand, not having a specific theme will allow

3 participants to develop their artwork through a great variety of forms, techniques, and materials, although the venues for some our Textile Art Salons delineate thematic aspects of the works. The 7 th WTA Biennial will offer four Internationally Juried Salons and one Invited Artists Exhibition. The International Juried Salons will be shown at the following venues: the Teatro Solís and the SUBTE Exposition Center. The Salons are: Large Format Textile Art- Folding - Unfolding Small Format Textile Art Photography Textile Image Video Textile Art Teatro Solís & SUBTE Exposition Center. 4 The participating artists to the exhibitions shall be selected by an International Jury of recognized trajectory. The 7 th WTA Biennial will have the honor, to have Spain as a guest country. Lectures and workshops will take place during the Biennial event. In 2017, the Organization will celebrate 20 years of uninterrupted activity, for which it will grant special recognition to the persons who, during this time, have selflessly collaborated in the WTA Biennials and various other events throughout the world.

5 INTERNATIONAL CALL LARGE FORMAT TEXTILE ART SALON Folding - Unfolding The main venue of the 7 th WTA International Biennial - Uruguay 2017 will be in the capital city of Montevideo during the month of October Operating with the underlying concept of Diversity, the Large Format Art Salon will take place at the SUBTE Exposition Center. The subtitle of this Salon, Folding Unfolding, implies an idea and a requirement: the artwork must be folded so as to simplify packaging, reduce transportation costs, and facilitate its subsequent display. When we talk about contemporary textile art we refer to the artistic expression that bases its language upon the concept of textiles and/or makes use of diverse materials related to <<textiles or nets>>, and may be approached from other artistic areas. Therefore, other techniques and new mediums get incorporated into old traditional techniques. (WTA: 2012) A. PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS 1. Participants must be of adult age and of any nationality. 2. 6 10. Participants shall be financially responsible for transportation of the artwork to and from. Selected artworks must include hanging device and instructions to that effect (if necessary) as well as side orientation for staging the artwork. 11. For purposes of event publicity, participants shall surrender all publication rights of their artwork images. B. SELECTION PROCESS Artworks shall be selected by a group of three renowned international judges. Three awards and several honorary mentions shall be granted according to the Jury s decision. WTA shall issue each participating artist one (1) digital format catalogue (CD) and one (1) certificate of participation. C. SENDING THE ARTWORKS The total cost of transporting the artwork country of origin to Montevideo, and from Montevideo to sender shall be paid for by the participant. Artworks must be labeled as MUESTRA SIN VALOR COMERCIAL (SAMPLE WITHOUT COMMERCIAL VALUE) to the address that will be provided by WTA. Artworks shall be returned within the following year after the closure of the show, to the address provided by the artist in the registration form. Artworks that are not donated to the WTA Organization shall be returned to their country of origin under the responsibility and liability of each artist, provided that full payment of all return costs are previously met by the artist.
