3 Admission APPLYING FOR ADMISSION APPLYING FOR ADMISSION The application process requires thoughtful preparation. Before completing any forms, you must review the specific requirements of the school and proposed field of study for which you are applying. Guidelines for applying online can be found on the Web at REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION All applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. Academic records should indicate that the applicant is prepared to pursue advanced study and research in the field or fields in which he or she intends to specialize. Applicants who have received a bachelor s degree from a nonaccredited institution or who have completed an educational program equivalent to a bachelor s degree may be admitted if their undergraduate scholastic records indicate superior ability in the field in which they intend to specialize. Below is a list of application materials that are required for all degree-seeking applicants. (A separate application is required for nondegree-seeking students. See page 7 for details.) Schools and specific fields of study require different numbers of recommendations and many require supplemental materials. For information on the requirements of your proposed field of study, please refer to the individual school page inserts included in this packet, also available online at Completed and Signed Application Form Please type or print the application form (see pages 3 6). Please answer all required questions. If you prefer to apply for admission online, visit Statement of Purpose Your statement must follow the length and content requirements of the school and program to which you are applying. Please see the school page insert for further details. Official Copies of Academic Transcripts Official university/college transcripts bearing the official seal of the institution and the signature of the registrar are required for all previous postsecondary education. Request the registrar of EACH institution you attended to send copies of your transcript to the Office of Graduate Admissions. Transcripts should show the degree earned, courses completed toward the degree, the grade in each course, and the basis for grading in effect at the institution. If a transcript is not written in English, a certified, translated copy must be submitted. Certified copies are acceptable but photocopies are not. Acceptance into university graduate programs for applicants in their final year of undergraduate study is provisional until the receipt of their final transcript showing the conferral of their undergraduate degree. Provisional admission will affect a student s eligibility for federal aid. Please see for more information. Three Letters of Recommendation Graduate schools require recommendation of academic qualification for graduate study. Check the individual school requirements for the specific numbers and types of recommendations required by your field of study. Confidential Recommendation Forms are included in this packet and can also be found online at Recommendations should be returned with your application or sent directly by the recommender to the Office of Graduate Admissions. Forms and letters should be sent in a sealed envelope with the recommender s signature across the seal. Recommenders may use their own letterhead, including their name both signed and printed, along with the applicant s full name. Standardized Test Scores Most graduate programs require scores from standardized tests. You must arrange to have the appropriate official score reports mailed to the Office of Graduate Admissions by the testing service. Please refer to the school page insert to determine which scores are required or preferred by your proposed field of study. Test scores more than five years old are not accepted for admissions review. The Catholic University of America codes are: GRE (5104), MAT (1042) and TOEFL (5104). Application Fee Please include a check or money order for $60 (nonrefundable) payable, in U.S. currency, to The Catholic University of America. The application fee is waived only for applicants who are registered currently and taking classes at CUA, for Project 1000 participants, and for McNair Scholars. Requirements by School or Major Schools and specific programs have additional requirements. Please refer to the school page insert and/or Graduate Studies Announcements (available online at to determine whether your proposed field of study has additional requirements. Supplemental Documentation for International Students 1

4 Admission APPLYING FOR ADMISSION INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS All international students must complete and submit the Graduate Application for Admission (pages 3 6); those admitted to a program at The Catholic University of America will receive more information regarding an I-20. Evidence of proficiency in the English language is required. If English is not your native language and you do not have a degree from a U.S. institution of higher education, you must submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report. Catholic University s TOEFL code is Proficiency in the English language may also be proven by an acceptable score using the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Please call the Office of Graduate Admissions ( ) regarding the acceptability of the IELTS for your program. APPLICANTS SEEKING NONDEGREE STATUS An applicant who does not wish to pursue a degree program at The Catholic University of America but wishes to follow courses independently may apply for admission as a nondegree student. If you are applying for admission as a nondegree-seeking student you are required to submit the following materials: Completed and Signed Nondegree Application Official Copies of Academic Transcripts for Bachelor s Degree Nonrefundable $60 Application Fee Admission as a nondegree student is limited to a single semester or summer session or nine credit hours, unless renewed by the dean of the school for registration in subsequent consecutive semesters or summer sessions. Nondegree students who subsequently wish to apply for degree study must file the degree-seeking application and documents, and be accepted officially for degree study. Since the mere accumulation of courses will not satisfy degree requirements, one should consult the appropriate dean or department chair before enrolling. A nondegreeseeking student may take up to nine graduate credits, which may be counted toward degree requirements if full acceptance to a degree program is granted. SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION To prevent delays in processing your application, all materials (with the exception of official standardized test scores) should be included with your application form. Applications will not be reviewed for an admission decision until they are complete. After you have completed your application form and gathered the supporting documents, mail them to: The Catholic University of America Office of Graduate Admissions 620 Michigan Ave., N.E. Washington, DC THE ADMISSION DECISION After a complete application is received, it is sent to the Admission Committee, which may include the dean of the school, department chair, and any number of faculty members, for immediate evaluation. (Processing a complete application to decision usually takes four to six weeks.) All applications and supporting documents become the property of The Catholic University of America and cannot be returned. All application materials are held for one year. After an admission decision has been made, a decision letter is sent to the applicant. A positive admission decision letter that includes an offer of admission is valid for the semester stated within the letter. Any admitted student wishing to defer his or her start date must notify the Office of Graduate Admissions and the dean of the relevant school of this intent in writing. Students who fail to register for the semester for which they have received acceptance are required to reapply for admission. Admission to graduate studies does not imply admission to candidacy for a degree, which is granted only after completion of required courses and examinations. HOUSING SERVICES You can obtain information concerning housing options by visiting the housing website at or by contacting Housing Services at
