1 LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONS DEPARTMENT OF ALLIED HEALTH STUDIES Spring Quarter, 2014 COURSE: COURSE DESCRIPTION: Anatomy and Physiology, AHCJ 251, 5 units This five unit course is the second half of a two-quarter sequence involving an integrated study of the structure and function of the human body. Detailed and rigorous coverage of the neural, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, renal and reproductive systems. Three lecture hours per week; three laboratory hours per week, including use of the human cadaver. Thursdays, 6:00-9:30 P.M., Swatek Anatomy Center, Centennial Complex FINAL LAB PRACTICAL: Thursday, 12 June 2014, 7:00 8:00 P.M. Each student should obtain a dissecting forcep and blunt probe by Lab #1 (3 April 2014). I suggest you also purchase a box of examination gloves for use on the cadaver studies. IMPORTANT LAB POLICIES ARE ATTACHED! EACH STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ADHERING TO THESE POLICIES! Each student should bring her/his student ID badge to the first lab session! ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Acts of dishonesty-including theft, plagiarism, giving or obtaining information in examinations or other academic exercises, or knowingly giving false information-is unacceptable for students in the School. Instructors and students are charged with the responsibility of reporting instances of such behavior to the department chairperson. The department chairperson is responsible for investigation. Substantiated violations are to be brought before the dean for disciplinary action. Such action may include, but is not limited to, academic probation or dismissal from the program. 2 ACCOMMODATIONS: If you are an individual with a disability and need reasonable accommodation to fully participate in this class, please obtain the Student Information and Requested Accommodation forms from the Office of the Dean, School of Allied Health Professions. REQUIRED TEXT: Human Anatomy and Physiology, Marieb & Hoehn, 9 th Edition. Each student must obtain a copy of the required textbooks within the first two weeks of the quarter. Books not purchased within two weeks will be returned to the publisher by the bookstore. It will then become the student's responsibility to obtain the textbook on his/her own. GRADING: Grades will be computed based on total points accumulated at quarter s end. Course grades will be given as below (instructor reserves the right to scale class scores at quarter s end): A = 95% A- = % B+ = % B = % B- = % C+ = % C = % C- = % D+ = % D = % F = 49.9% and Below: Final Score will be calculated as a simple percent of total possible points earned. QUIZZES: TESTS: Students should be prepared for a quiz at the beginning of each lecture session. Quizzes will be true/false, multiple choice, and/or short answer. Questions will be taken from the lectures/labs and the readings. Makeup quizzes must be cleared with the instructor and will be contingent on acceptable verifiable reasons for missing the scheduled quiz. No quizzes will be dropped. One unit exams and a final exam, will be administered. Exam format may be a combination of multiple choice, dichotomous, true/false, and/or short answer. Questions will come from the lectures and the readings. The final exam will be comprehensive. Makeup exams must be cleared with the instructor and will be contingent on acceptable verifiable reasons for missing the scheduled exam. At the discretion of the instructor, the earned score may be reduced on makeup exams. No exams will be dropped. PRACTICAL: EXAM TAKING POLICY A final practical examination will be given reflecting the coverage of individual topical areas. This final practical examination will occur at quarter s end. Applies to Classroom Exams. 1. Once a student has entered the examination room it is expected that they will not leave until completion of the exam. Restroom or other activities should be taken care of prior to entering the room. 2. All books, bags, purses, etc. must be left in a designated area. 3 take only a pencil and eraser to their desk. 3. Seating may be assigned by having the student s name on the test which will be placed on the desk where the student is to sit. The order may be random or alphabetical. Once the student finds the correct seat, the test is to remain unopened until the instructor indicates that it is time to start. 4. No questions will be taken during the exam. If the student has a question regarding a specific test item, a notation should be made on the front page listing the question number. Then beside the actual question any explanation or concern is to be written in detail. Notations are not permitted on the Scantron TM. 5. When a test is completed, the test and the Scantron TM must be brought to the instructor at the front of the room. 6. Once a student leaves the room the test is considered completed. 7. There is to be no talking during the test. If a student is seen talking or cheating, that student will be asked to leave the room whether or not the test is completed. 8. Grading keys for exams and quizzes will be provided at the instructor s discretion. 9. Requests to consider possible errors in grading must be made in writing within one week of the posting of exam or quiz score. 10. For all quizzes or exams using the Scantron TM, the instructor can only accept what the student fills in on the Scantron TM sheet! If there are differences between answers marked on a test booklet versus the Scantron TM sheet, the Scantron TM sheet will be regarded as the exclusive final and valid answer for that/those question(s). Applies to Take-home Exams 1. Students may work together on take-home exams. This promotes an opportunity to experience collaborative learning, and to engage in debate and critical discussion of the material. However, it is expected each student will participate in deriving, or completely generating, their own answers. Answers are not to be given away or simply copied. 2. Students may refer to their notes, and other printed and electronic resources. However, it is expected students will not consult faculty or more advanced students for assistance. 3. Students should anticipate take-home exams will be more challenging than inclass exams, given the opportunities noted above that are not available during inclass exams. CLASS ATTENDANCE: ABSENCES: COURSE Attendance is required for all classes. This follows the policy outlined in the School of Allied Health Professions Bulletin. Tardiness should be avoided. An attendance record will be taken at class and lab. Excessive absenteeism (20% of total lecture and laboratory hours), tardiness and leaving lecture or lab early, will result in a penalty against the student s grade. Note that ALL absences, including excused absences, contribute to the accumulation of the 20% cutoff. The school office must be informed of any absence so that the instructor may be notified prior to the class period ( ). It is the responsibility of the student to obtain any information that was given in his/her absence. Absences in excess of 20% of the scheduled class and laboratory appointments can result in automatic failure of the course. 4 OBJECTIVES: STUDENT OBJECTIVES: Present the student with a view of the anatomy of individual body organs and organ systems and their individual and systemic functions. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of understanding the cellular bases of organ function. By the end of the quarter, the student should be able to: 1) apply basic physiological and anatomical concepts to the human organism, including: a) use/application of the appropriate vocabulary of anatomy and physiology b) conceptually integrate the human organ systems. 2) Analyze neural function as evidenced by the ability to describe and integrate basic information that includes: a) cellular neuroanatomy. b) the structure, function and location of glia. c) neuronal function, and interneuronal communication encompassing both electrical and chemical synapses. d) organizational differentiation of neural tissue into peripheral and central components, and how these organizational entities are functionally and structurally defined. e) peripheral neural pathways, receptive input and motor innervation. f) reflexes. g) the meaning, structure and function of the autonomic nervous system. 3) Describe the special senses, to include: a) chemical senses Taste. Smell. b) vision, including, Structure of the eye and its supporting structure. Cellular organization of the retina. Phototransduction. Trichromatic theory for color vision. c) hearing and balance, including, Structure of the external, middle and inner ears Vestibular structure. Cochlear function. Encoding of sound information. 4) Discuss and describe the endocrine system, to include: a) its overarching role in physiological regulation. b) understanding basic differences between multicellular and unicellular glands. c) the organs/glands comprising the so-called endocrine system. d) the classes of chemical signaling agents (hormones) and their metabolic characteristics. e) synthesis and transport of hormones. f. half-life, onset and duration of hormone activity. 5 g) the two primary mechanisms of hormone action: 1. 2 nd Messenger Systems 2. Direct Gene Activation h) feedback systems and control of hormone release. i) the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. j) specific endocrine organs and their functions and modes of action. 5) Discuss basic concepts associated with blood, including: a) the nature and composition of plasma. b) the formed elements in blood. c) metabolic functions of the formed elements in blood. d) the structure and function of hemoglobin 6) Describe the structure and function of the human heart, including: a) its location in the thorax and relationship to other thoracic structures. b) its size, shape, muscular walls and associated serous membranes. c) the structural and contractile characteristics of cardiac muscle. d) the morphology of the heart, and the relationship of that morphology to cardiac function. e) the pathway of blood through the heart, and the role of valves in fluid movement. f) the origin and sequence of electrical excitation. g) a complete description of a single cardiac cycle. h) factors associated with regulation of heart rate and stroke volume. 7) Analyze the role of the vascular system in maintaining homeostasis, by being able to a) compare and contrast the anatomy and histology of veins, arteries and capillaries. b) define blood flow, blood pressure, and resistance. c) describe factors influencing blood pressure, and mechanisms of pressure regulation.. d) describe the structure and physiology of the pulmonary circuit. e) describe general functions of the systemic circuit, and identify and name major vessels of this circuit. 8) Discuss lymphatic structure and function including: a) the structure and distribution of lymphatic vessels. b) the composition of lymphoid tissue c) the structure and function of lymph nodes. 9) Discuss the respiratory system including: a) descriptions of the organs forming the respiratory system, including associated serous membranes. b) the respiratory passageways and the respiratory membrane. c) naming and defining respiratory volumes and capacities. d) the mechanics of breathing. e) gas exchange, including concepts of partial pressure and oxygen saturation. 6 f) mechanisms of oxygen and CO2 transport. 10) Analyze digestive function as evidenced by the ability to describe and integrate basic information that includes: a) naming and describing the organs of the digestive system. b) differentiating between the digestive tract and digestive system. c) describe the histology of the organs of the digestive system. d) describe the base function of each digestive organ. e) describe the composition of gastric juice, and the process of gastric secretion. f) relate gastric motility to the overall process of digestion, and explain the regulation of gastric secretion and motility. g) describe the interactions of pancreatic and intestinal functions. h) list the major functions of the large intestine. i) describe the physiological processes driving chemical digestion and absorption. 11) Describe urinary system structure and function, to include: a) the gross anatomy of the kidneys and their capsules. b) blood vasculature of kidneys. c) the organs of the urinary system. d) the structure of a nephron. e) renal filtration, reabsorption and secretion and their underlying physiological mechanisms. f) explaining the role of various hormones in maintaining normal renal function and blood pressure. g) explanations for the medullary osmotic gradient and how that gradient affects the concentration of urine.
