3 Who is Hospice Calgary and where do my funds go? Hospice Calgary guides children, teens and adults through the grief process as they face a life-threatening illness and death of a loved one. Our team of professionals provides individual, family and group support as well as 24 hour end-of-life care. Counselling has really helped me cope with the tragedy, and I ve learned a lot about myself and what happened. We operate two centres of care: Sage Centre, for counselling and education, and our Rosedale Hospice, which offers 24-hour, highly-specialized end-of-life palliative care for individuals dying of cancer. For example, your funds will help with the following: $500 per season maintains the gardens at Rosedale Hospice $1,500 covers the annual cost of grief counselling per child or teen $200 covers hot lunch, snacks and beverages for Living with Cancer participants and their families for the week $1,000 covers the monthly transportation costs for counsellors to meet clients in their homes or schools What is a Third Party Event? Mission: To help families and individuals achieve support, hope and wellbeing through compassionate end-of-life and bereavement care. Charitable Registration No: RR0001 A third party event is an activity where an individual or group takes on a project or event to raise funds for a charity of their choice. These initiatives are invaluable to our organization as they relieve pressure on our own staff resources. Third Party events do have to abide by rules laid out by the Canada Revenue Agency. These guidelines are detailed on page 6 for our supporters. Page 3 May

4 Fundraising Ideas Be Inspired by Others! Sports or Activity Events "Every year, the Excel Homes staff walk through Edworthy Park to support Calgary families facing the loss of a loved one through Hospice Calgary's Child and Youth Services. In the last 7 years, we have raised over $250,000 for Hospice Calgary's Child and Youth Services. Excel Homes is proud to match every dollar raised by employees through the pledges they receive." Pick something from your bucket list, a sport you enjoy, or a family activity then ask your friends to sponsor you. Some examples could include: A 12 hour hockey tournament A mountain climb challenge A 5 km family friendly walk Company golf tournament The 18 inning baseball game Neighbourhood Garage or Bake Sale Ask your friends and family to donate items for the sale. To spread the word about what you are doing use one of our templated posters, your social media and word of mouth. Don t forget to share why you are doing this. People want to know about why this cause is important to you. Page 4 May

5 Celebration Fundraisers Are you hosting a wine and cheese night for friends? Is there a birthday coming up and you would rather ask for donations than presents? Do you have a family reunion or annual party coming up? The sky is the limit for celebrations and these are excellent ideas to raise funds for Hospice Calgary. You can promote your event and the fact that donations are going to support Hospice Calgary. Share your passion for our cause with your friends and ask them to join you in your goal. Youth Fundraising There is no age limit to those affected by grief and there is no age limit to those who can give back to Hospice Calgary. Summer is a perfect time for a lemonade stand. Is your birthday coming up and do you have enough toys? Ask your friends to give a donation instead of a birthday present to help other grieving families. Quarter Wars: teams compete by decorating jars and seeing who can collect the most quarters. Host a scavenger hunt: get teams to collect pledges to participate with prizes for the top teams. Board game tournament host a game night for your friends and family. Break into teams and charge an entry fee. Page 5 May

6 How can Hospice Calgary help me with my event? Once you have decided to run an event for Hospice Calgary we will provide over the phone or in person consultation for you. We will advise you on any permits or gaming licences that may be needed. We will provide charitable receipts to your participants/donors (subject to Canada Revenue guidelines). Arrange for a Hospice Calgary representative to speak to your participants Set up an online fundraising page for you and access to pledge forms if needed Provide poster templates for your to promote your event Provide social media support to attract participants as well as to recognize your fundraising after the event Please note that the support you need is dependent on the scope and timeline of your event. Tax Receipt Guidelines Hospice Calgary will be more than happy to issue tax receipts for: Donations of any amount received on pledge forms with complete donor information Online donations will automatically be receipted to the individual through your fundraising page We cannot issue tax receipts for gifts of service or gift certificates when received from the issuing vendor. 7 Promote Your Event Post on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn about your efforts and link to your fundraising page. Be sure to link to page as well. This way we can also share your work with others that support the cause. Use our poster templates. This will help to legitimize your efforts and remind your network the impact your event will have. Determine where is the best place to have these up (school, work, neighbourhood store, etc.) Check with your employer about matching opportunities or, places within the work place you can promote your efforts. Will your employer let you add your event to your signature? Is your employer willing to match employee donations up to a certain amount? Think of innovative ways to ask your friends and family to support you. For example, if you have 750 Facebook followers and each donated $1 you would make $750, $10 each would fundraise $7,500!) your friends and family and ask them to support you. Give them a link to your Hospice Calgary event donation page and let them know that it is an easy and secure way to give. Page 7 May

8 Fundraising Wrap-Up The wrap up of your event is very important to both Hospice Calgary and those that supported you. KEEP CALM IT S A WRAP Wrap up your event with your donors People want to know their help made a difference. Let those who donated (and anyone else) know how much your fundraising total was. Did you reach or surpass your goal? Thank your donors! You couldn t have done it without them so, let them know that. If you promoted the event through social media then this is a good way to thank everyone as well. Thank you cards to those who gave larger donations is a little extra way to show how much this mattered to you. Contact Us Are you ready to plan your event? Within 2 weeks of your event we require all pledge forms and offline donations to be in to our office. This helps us ensure that we are providing tax receipts to those that helped you in a timely manner. If you would like a social media shout-out please send us any pictures that you have of the event. However, as it is hard to get permission from everyone at your event to share pictures please send us pictures of either yourself, those that have given you permission, or general site pictures of the event. Let us know how it went, what you liked about working with us or, how we could serve you better. Let us know when your fundraising was complete.
