Slide stack Denmark 1. Who is GS1? 2. GS1 Tool box 3. EPC EPC use cases EPC Architecture TDS EPCIS 4. EPC in pharma 2
GS1 in a nutshell GS1 is the most widely used supply chain standards system in the world We are not-for-profit organization We are neutral from business partners We are user-driven and governed We serve all companies, from multinationals to SMEs We are a platform for collaborative agreements between business partners We believe that our people employees and associates are our most important asset 3
GS1 Member Organisations Countries with a GS1 Member Organisation Countries served on a direct basis from GS1 Global Office (Brussels) 110 Member Organisations. 145 Countries served. Local services, global reach. 4
The GS1 Toolbox Product Classifiction (GPC) Party identification (GLN) Product identification (GTIN) Bar Codes > Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) Share data RFID/EPC Global Returnable Asset Identifier (GRAI) 5
GS1 s Brand Architecture 6
EPC
GS1 EPCglobal Standards GS1 EPCglobal Standards are: A set of integrated industry-driven standards Developed to meet user s requirements enabling: Identification of objects, Data capture, Sharing of information among partners throughout the supply chain. 8
What is an EPC? EPC = Electronic product code A unique number that is used to identify an item in the supply chain Combines a silicon chip and an antenna Information received from EPC on tag can be associated to other data EPC is an instance of a product allocated a serial nr. There several GS1 EPC keys specified in GS1 Tag Data Standards 9
SGTIN Denmark GCP EPC tag specification and types + Item Reference 9,999, Serial Number SGTIN-96: max SGTIN-198: max an20 SSCC GCP Serial Reference SSCC-96: max SGLN GCP Location Reference ,999 0 Extension Component SGLN-96: max SGLN-195: max an20 GRAI GIAI GSRN GDTI 10 GCP GCP GCP GCP Asset Type 999,999 0 Individual Asset Reference GIAI-96: max GIAI-202: max an24 Service Reference GSRN-96: max 99,999,999,999 99,999 Document Type 999, Serial Number GRAI-96: max GRAI-170: max an16 Serial Number 96-bit: max 2,199,023,255, bit: max an17
EPC is all about visibility What is visibility? Seeing objects across a supply chain What, where, when and why Sharing information Across an enterprise, between trading partners, across the world Sharing information based on GS1 identification keys GS1 EPCglobal Standards enable Data capture what, where, when Adding value to data why Sharing information securely known and unknown trading partners 11
Business Use Cases for Visibility Denmark Inventory Visibility Product Visibility Asset Visibility Recalls Brand Protection Counterfeit Diversion, Gray Market Channel Management Chain of Custody Track and Trace Electronic Pedigree Visibility enables traceability of products Visibility enables traceability and authentication of products Visibility supplies the custody information for creating authenticated chain of custody 12
The EPC architecture A stack of standards, we ll look at two: EPCIS and the GS1 Tag data standards 13
The EPCIS. WHAT individual asset instances (e.g. SGTIN, SSCC, GRAI...) WHERE Read Point (GLN) Business Location (GLN) WHEN Timestamp of this event WHY Business Step (e.g., packing) Status (e.g., sold)...recorded as an EPCIS Event using GS1 keys for object & location 14
Clearing up some misconceptions on EPCIS EPCIS... is not an application, but rather a GS1/EPCglobal Standard defines interfaces for the capture and query of data can be integrated into ERP / tracking & tracing applications augments rather than supplants traditional EDI requires serialised identification objects! does not require RFID can be used with GS1 bar-coded objects 15
Network standards Security Specifications Search and Discovery GEN 2 Tag Tag Data Standards EPCIS protocols 16
EPC in pharmaceuticals Reducing counterfeits and catching clones
EPC enabling higher level processes The patient s complaint 11.4 million counterfeit medicines seized in % growth from 2006 A risk to patient safety A loss of profits Less consumer confidence RISK of patient safety 18 The solution: Know where your goods are and where they have been!
Methods for authenticating goods 19
Registering events in EPC 20 Taken from white paper:
EPCIS query of supply chain events Denmark EPCIS Repository pharmaceutical plant Query & Response logistics provider Query & Response pharmacy Query & Response Where are the drugs we ordered? customs What has been commissioned and is waiting for us to pick up? regulatory consumers Which serialised blister packs were produced on line 33F in week 37? Who had custody of these articles at any given point? Query & Response 21
Location certainty = reduction of counterfeit goods Few reads = risk High location uncertainty Many reads = lower risk Low location uncertainty 22
Conclusion
Why EPC? User driven Open standards Allows you to leverage the GS1 system (keys/id systems) A way to manage visibility in a structured standardised way Multi-Sector driven: FMCG, healthcare, asset management 24
Benefits of EPC Technology Denmark Business Perspective Reduce complexity Reduce costs std is sharing dev costs (or pigging backing) Facilitate trading partner collaboration Allow organizations to focus on how to use the information rather than how to get the information Consumer Perspective Improve customer satisfaction Improve customer protection 25
EPCIS - supply chain visibility for increased efficiency If you can t see it, you can t measure it If you can t measure it, you can t control it If you can t control it, it s probably costing you too much...and you probably don t even know how much! 26
Inter-organizational strategy There is a choice to be made between Proprietary relationship-specific investments or Open multi-enterprise collaboration and global exchange of data Improved collaboration and knowledge transfer between trading partners, better flexibility If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together Old African proverb 27
