Course Description Course Description Prerequisites Course Outcomes Forum Student Responsibilities Required Course Materials Course Outline Grading Criteria Assignments This course covers the organization and operation of computer systems, including batch processing, interactive processing, multiprogramming systems, storage management, data sharing in main storage, resource control, file systems, and processor scheduling. Prerequisites CS341 - Data Structures Please note that CS208 and CS241 are prerequisites to CS341, so knowledge of the subjects covered in those courses will also be assumed. 2 Identify and list the goals and major elements of an operating system. Explain the implications of concurrent processing on an operating system. Define and explain the difference between buffering and spooling. Define multi-programming and explain how it is accomplished. Evaluate the need for protection and describe where and how it can be accomplished. Describe the implications of CPU scheduling and evaluate the performance of alternative algorithms for scheduling different types of applications. Define deadlock; list methods to identify system deadlock; and identify and distinguish between the pros and cons of deadlock prevention, avoidance, and detection. Identify the purposes behind, and distinguish between methods of, memory management. Explain virtual memory and its relationship to paging. Describe methods of secondary file management and the effects on the performance of the operating system. Explain the interaction between the operating system and the structure used for file systems. List the implications of distributed hardware on the operating system. Evaluate the tradeoffs in placing the burden of supporting system functions in hardware, the operating system, the application software, and on the user. Describe the basics of an operating system and determine the environment in which this operating system would best perform. 3 The forum is your primary link with other students and your facilitator. Your facilitator will post any information and/or additional assignments to the forum. You will communicate with your facilitator and the other students in the class via the forum. Each student is expected to participate weekly in the following ways: 1. By posting answers to assigned forum discussion questions. 2. By responding to instructor-initiated questions. 3. By posting questions about the course materials. 4. By responding to the postings of other students. You should always check the forum for information immediately on Monday morning. It would also be a good idea to get into the habit of checking the forum every time you log in. Student Responsibilities The accelerated pace of the SPS Undergraduate Program courses assumes that students take a great deal of responsibility for their own learning outcomes. Students are expected to complete all assigned reading, review all course content pages in the week-by-week section of the course each week, and actively participate in forum discussions and group activities. Outside of class, students should expect a minimum of hours per week of study, homework assignments, and/or projects. Top of page Course Outline CS430 provides information on an essential part of the computer system the operating system. The emphasis in this course is on how operating systems work, not on learning a specific operating system or coding an operating system. Consequently the course focuses on tradeoffs encountered in designing an operating system, and how those tradeoffs impact various types of applications running under the operating system. The course will start with a brief historical perspective of the evolution of operating systems, and then cover the major components of most operating systems. Particular emphasis will be given to three major OS subsystems: process management (processes, threads, CPU scheduling, synchronization, and deadlock), memory management (segmentation, paging, swapping), file systems, and operating system support for distributed systems. Late points will be deducted for late submission of assignments. Assignment/Activity Percent of Grade Quizzes (4) 40%. Note: Number of points varies by quiz. Each quiz is 10% of the grade.
