1 University of Kent and Kent Union Student poster competition Big prizes and portfolio boosting regional coverage can you create an eye-catching design for the University which will be seen across its campuses in Kent? The University s poster campaign is an opportunity to showcase your creative skills and have your work included in a university wide campaign. The winner will receive: 200 Valuable experience and designs for your portfolio Eligibility The competition is open to all students currently-enrolled at the University of Kent. Competition entrants may submit as many poster designs as they wish. The brief: Project Design a poster for the University of Kent, promoting the Dignity at Study Policy, (link: the procedure that protects student rights at Kent and outlines support available to a student facing discrimination. The poster: Will be displayed at our Canterbury and Medway campuses Will be used to engage over 17,000 students Aim of the poster campaign: Raise awareness of the Dignity at Study Policy among students, staff, victims, bullies and observers. The Campaign will go live in January Highlight where victims can go for support Background The University of Kent created the Dignity at Study Policy in 2013 and launched it with a series of student-designed posters across various mediums. This policy is one of the foundation policies of the University, aimed at ensuring an open and friendly culture on campus and as such is extremely important. The Policy also outlines what action students should take and what support is available to them if they are facing instances of bullying, discrimination or harassment. The previous awareness campaign is now dated and no longer has the same impact as it did when it was new. Therefore the University would like to create a new awareness campaign to refresh the message and raise awareness. 1

2 The communication of this procedure is an opportunity to highlight the issue of bullying and harassment, not just in higher education, but in any environment, be it a work or social situation, as well as a chance to celebrate the diversity found at the University of Kent. The campaign is commissioned by the University of Kent. Description We are looking for a strong, imaginative poster design which is simple yet dynamic. Although the contest is to design a poster, the winning concepts will be used across a range of media and entrants should think about how the design could be adapted to the following mediums: A poster (A3) Digital screens Social media Message objectives The aim of the poster is to make predominately students aware of the Dignity at Study Policy and convey the values expressed by the Policy, notably those of dignity, courtesy, respect and consideration for all. It should also highlight how to report incidents of discrimination or harassment. It should be clear that the University of Kent does not have a high level of bullying present at any of its sites and wishes to ensure that students and staff respect the diversity of the Kent community. It should raise the issue of bullying in the students minds, be it they re a victim, observer or bully themselves. It should also celebrate the diversity found at Kent. The posters will need a strapline (eg vote for diversity, proud to be different, expect respect etc). We would like you to create your own strapline, but if you like any of ours feel free to use them. Target audience Primary audience: students Secondary audience: teaching and student support staff Requirements Size of poster: A4 (210 x 297 mm) Format: electronic (jpeg, tiff, or PDF) Layout: Portrait Logo: you must include the Kent logo ( R.S.Lamyman@kent.ac.uk to request one) Strapline 2

If your poster is selected for shortlisting, you will need to ensure that you can provide the original artwork (ie files in Photoshop (including layered files), Illustrator, InDesign, or original handmade compositions). 4 Competition terms and conditions 1. This competition is a contest to design a poster for the new bullying and harassment policy developed by the University of Kent and Kent Union. The University of Kent shall be referred to as the University throughout these terms and conditions. 2. To be eligible to enter you must be enrolled on a current programme of study at the University of Kent when you submit your design. If an entrant does not fit this criterion they will be automatically disqualified. 3. The closing date for entries is midnight on Friday 28 October 2016 and must be submitted via to R.S.Lamyman@kent.ac.uk. The University will not accept mailed materials or any submissions made after the closing date (27 October 2016, 11.59pm). The University will not be responsible for any errors which occur during submission and will not accept illegible or incomplete entries. 4. The University is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any or entry to be received by the University on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, including, but not limited to, University of Kent , or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrant s or any other person's computer related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in this competition. 5. The University assumes that all entries are original and are the works and property of the entrant, with all rights granted there-in. The University of Kent is not responsible for incorrect information provided on entry forms that misrepresents the intellectual property rights of original ownership of ideas. The University assumes that all images provided with entries are free of any third-party rights. The University is not liable for violations of any third-party rights, including, but not limited to, claims of copyright, trademark, patent infringement, defamation, trade secrets, or trade dress on the part of the entrant. 6. Entrant s entry must not have been submitted in any other competition or previously published. 7. The University of Kent reserves the right to void and/or disqualify any submission, if found in University of Kent s sole discretion to be plagiarised, copied, or fraudulent; to infringe upon existing rights of others; or to be incomplete, damaged, obscene, vulgar, offensive or otherwise unsuitable. 8. Entrants may submit as many designs as they wish. Entries cannot be returned. 9. By submitting a design to this competition, entrants understand and accept that all entries become the property of the University of Kent. And that the entrant has relinquished all intellectual property in the entry to the University of Kent. 10. By submitting an entry, entrant grants to the University, the right, except where prohibited by law, to use his/her name, and written or oral statements, for advertising and promotional purposes in promoting or publicising the University without compensation, unless required by law. Entrants shall have no right of approval, no claim to compensation, and no claim (including, without limitation, claims based on invasion of privacy, defamation, or right of publicity) arising out of any use, blurring, alteration, or use in composite form of your name, likeness, city and state, biographical information, or entry. The rights granted under this paragraph are without compensation or notification to the entrant of any kind, except as prohibited by law, 4

5 and shall extend to all entries and all other submitted materials related to the competition, including those submitted by non-winners and winners. 11. One winner will be chosen and contacted via by 18 November The winner will be selected by a panel consisting of members both from the University of Kent and Kent Union. Entrants will be judged in accordance with the criteria set out in point 13 of these terms and conditions. The University s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered after the winner has been decided. This is a competition of skill, not a game of chance. 13. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: A strong, imaginative design which... Empowers victims and observers of bullying and harassment to come forward Celebrates diversity Is dynamic Can be easily reproduced for print and online 14. The University reserves the right to extend the competition deadline and the results announcements at its own discretion. 15. The University reserves all rights related to the entries, including the rights to edit, publish, use, adapt, exploit, modify, copy, disseminate, post, or dispose of the entries, online, in print, film, television, or in any other media for advertising and promotional or other purposes, or license others to do so, without compensation or notification to the respective entrants of any kind, except as prohibited by law. 16. The winner will receive a 200 cheque from the University. 17. The prizes must be taken as stated and cannot be deferred or transferred. 18. If for any reason the competition is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the University which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this competition, the University reserves the right in their sole discretion to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the competition, and/or to judge entries from among all eligible, nonsuspect entries received prior to such action. 19. The University is not responsible for any injury, losses, or damages of any kind resulting from participation in this competition (except any sort of liability that, by law, cannot be limited or excluded). The University assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft, or destruction or unauthorised access to, or alteration of, entries. 20. By participating in the competition, entrant agrees to abide by the terms of these terms and conditions and by the decisions of the University and the judges, which will be final and binding on all matters pertaining to the competition. Except where prohibited by law, by entering the competition, each entrant agrees that the University and its designees may use his or her name, for advertising, promotional, and other purposes in any media now or hereafter known throughout the world (including the right to post entry on the University s website) without further compensation or notification. 5
