Student 1 Commentary Foundation Question 1 Questions 1(a) The student uses a correct verb to communicate the task and is awarded 2 marks. Question 1(b) The student uses a correct verb to communicate the task, although the sentence is not totally accurate, it communicates the task without ambiguity 2 marks are awarded. Question 1(c) The verb compra in the third person with an incorrect use of mi and use of falta instead of falda fails to communicate at all no marks can be given. Question 1(d) An accurate verb form is used with a colour and therefore 2 marks are awarded. Question 1(e) The student is awarded 1 mark as although we understand that he/she goes on holiday to Spain, despite the errors of spelling and gender, the information is conveyed without using a verb form. 8 Student 2 Commentary Foundation Question 1 Questions 1(a) This question is awarded 1 mark as there is some ambiguity. By using un dos we do not know whether he/she has one or two brothers. Question 1(b) This question was not attempted = 0 marks. Question 1(c) This question was not attempted = 0 marks. Question 1(d) In this question the message is clear despite the use of two verbs 2 marks are awarded. Question 1(e) In this question the verb is incorrect and the message is not totally clear, although we understand that he/she normally goes to Spain. Therefore 1 mark is awarded here. Total - 4 marks 8

Student 3 Commentary Foundation Question 2(a) Higher Question 1(a) Content = 8 This student has written a lot of relevant information about his/her daily routine and has expressed opinions but there is no description of his/her house. He/she has only covered one of the two tasks required and therefore the maximum mark accessible for Content is 9. A mark of 8 is awarded because there is a lack of clarity in places for example, mi padre conductira/mi professor haré un registro/estoy normalmente peligroso. Range and Accuracy of Language = 5 The student is awarded a mark of 5 as they use simple linking words y, porque, sin embargo and there are attempts to use longer sentences, although these are not always successful for example en mi madre s coche, normalmente dormir a las once en el noche. There are also many basic spelling errors such as leugo, assebelia, bein. Total - 13 marks 11

1aC: 6 1aRA: 4 13

Student 4 Commentary Foundation Question 2(a) Higher Question 1(a) Content = 6 This student answers both parts of the task and conveys some relevant information about both the house and his/her daily routine, although overall the response is quite limited. However, there is only one opinion me gusta mi casa and so the maximum mark accessible for Content is 6. In order to score in the 7-9 mark band the student must include at least two opinions. Range and Accuracy of Language = 4 The student can form short, simple sentences but there are many errors with verb endings and some phrases are unclear for example brasher diente/ir go mi casa. The student is therefore awarded a mark of 4. Total - 10 marks 14

15

1bC: 8 1bRA: 5 16

Student 5 Commentary Foundation Question 2(b) Higher Question 2(b) Content = 8 This student answers both parts of the task and conveys a reasonable amount of information. He/she communicates a number of opinions es fenominal/no debes fumar/es genial. However, the language lacks clarity occasionally and a mark of 8 was awarded for this reason. Range and Accuracy of Language = 5 The student tries to form longer sentences and has probably had access to a dictionary le corrían gotas de sudor por la cara and a través de peligroso postre. The use of a dictionary is permitted in the writing test. The first sentence is totally unclear as is the information about the enormous brother. The student does not conjugate levantarse or llevar and misspellings such as dotos and verna delay understanding. The piece is generally more accurate than inaccurate and is awarded 5 marks rather than 6 marks as the ideas do not link well and there are many basic errors. Total - 13 marks 17

18

1bC: 12 1bRA: 7 19

Student 6 Commentary Foundation Question 2(b) Higher Question 1(b) Content = 12 This student communicates a lot of information clearly. It is all relevant to the task and both elements of the task are covered. He/she communicates opinions in different ways creo que/me encantaría and links his/her ideas well porque/sin embargo/ni/ además/y después/que se llama/por lo tanto. Therefore he/she is awarded 12. Range and Accuracy of Language = 7 There is a good variety of structures for example yo no fumo ni tomo drogas/ anoche fui al parque/estaba muy cansada and the vocabulary is varied and clear and the piece is generally accurate. However, there are some errors in the use of structures such as me encantaría voy a continuar/ mis corriendo con ella. The student is therefore awarded a mark of 7. Total - 19 marks 20

21

22

Student 7 Commentary Higher Question 2(a) Content = 5 This student answers both parts of the task. He/she gives a limited response in terms of length as it does not reach the minimum number of words. However, although the response is brief, it is relevant and clear. He/she conveys simple opinions for example me encanta tomar el sol/me gusta ser relajado/creo que las vacaciones es importante/es bueno tener un descanso and develops some basic ideas by justifying opinions porque paso tiempo con mi familia/porque es divertido/porque estudio mucho para mis examines. The mark of 5 was therefore awarded. Range of Language = 3 When a mark of 5 is awarded for Content the maximum mark that can be given for Range of Language is 6.The vocabulary used is appropriate to the needs of the task and the structures are simple. Therefore the mark of 3 was awarded. Accuracy = 3 When a mark of 5 is given for Content the maximum mark that can be awarded for Accuracy is 3. However in this case we would not want to go any higher than a 3 for Accuracy. The piece is more accurate than inaccurate and although there are many errors, nadar con mi hermano poco en a orrillas del mar/me gustaría voy a ir/ quero conoco muchas personas famosa the intended meaning is clear. The mark of 3 was awarded. Total - 11 marks 23

Student 8 Commentary Higher Question 2(a) Content = 10 This student wrote a good response to the task. He/she demonstrated his/her ability to convey a lot of information clearly. He/she started by writing about her holiday last year and linked this well to his/her reasons why it is important to go on holiday. He/she then explained why he/she wanted to go to the United States this summer and expressed his/her wish for his/her Spanish friend to be able to go with him/her sería una experiencia inolvidable/si solo podrías viajar conmigo. He/she described New York and his/her ideal holiday and contrasted this with his/her dislikes in terms of holidays. A mark of 10 was awarded as it was mostly relevant and mostly clear. Range of Language = 6 The student used some variety of vocabulary and structures and attempted longer sentences, which were sometimes successful. There were some really nice phrases such as mucha gente me dicen que and Quién sabe? However, in the third paragraph it was unclear whether the verbs were meant to be used in the imperative form or whether it was a misconjugation of the present tense. A mark of 6 was awarded. Accuracy = 3 Overall the piece was more accurate than inaccurate and the intended meaning was generally clear despite a number of minor errors. A mark of 3 was awarded. Total - 19 marks 27

28

29

Student 9 Commentary Higher Question 2(b) Content = 9 This student s response is generally relevant to the task, although he/she focuses more on the good and bad aspects of technology in society rather than in the student s daily life, which was the task set. He/she expresses opinions for example a veces la technología es peligrosa/los móviles y los ordenadores son muy malsano en la noche para el sueño. He/she develops ideas about the future uses of technology and the benefits of internet to connect children in South Africa and South America with children in England. The content is sufficient and was awarded a mark of 9. Range of Language = 6 The student uses a variety of vocabulary and attempts to use longer sentences but these are not always successful. The mark of 6 was awarded. Accuracy = 3 For Accuracy a mark of 3 was awarded due to the fact that verb and tense formations are often unsuccessful, although the intended meaning is usually clear for example mi teléfono es importantísimo para mi sobrevivir/en el future me gustaría cocino mi comido en un instante. Total - 18 marks 30
