You and your central heating
Control of your central heating is important A huge amount of energy is used to heat homes. Much of it is either wasted or used inefficiently. Heating controls help to reduce waste, reduce demand and use fuel more sparingly. The facts (from BERR) 84% of domestic energy is used for heating and hot water Only 3% of domestic energy is used for lighting 60% of domestic energy is used for heating 1/3 of UK energy consumption is domestic

Enhancing your environment...
...protecting our environment There are two kinds of heating and hot water systems the kind that you control, and the kind that controls you. With a programmable system, you can decide when the heating is on, how warm it is and which rooms you want to heat. You will also have all the hot water you need when you want it. A more controllable system can make a real difference to your bank balance too, potentially cutting your central heating bill by 40%. With the right boiler, the average household can save between 190 and 230 a year, every year. The environment is everyone s responsibility and many of us are trying to reduce the CO 2 emissions of our homes by using energysaving light bulbs or switching our TVs from standby. But did you know that around 84% of your home s CO 2 emissions come from heating and hot water? That s why investing in a more efficient, more controllable boiler is the most environmentally responsible thing you can do for your home. In fact, installing a full set of heating controls with a new boiler will save the average house 1.7 tonnes of CO 2 a year. That s the equivalent of never using a light bulb again. Actually just fitting good controls to your existing system can have a big effect, without the high cost of boiler change. honeywelluk.com
Choose the right boiler While old style boilers convert just 60% of their fuel into heat, new condensing boilers are 90% efficient, saving 30 for every 100 spent on heating. If everyone in the UK with gas central heating installed a condensing boiler, we d save more than 13 million tonnes of CO 2 and that s why UK law* now states that all new gas and oil central heating boilers should now be condensing. There are two types of condensing boiler regular, which uses a cylinder to heat your hot water and combination, which gives instant hot water without a cylinder and a qualified installer will be able to tell you which is most suitable for your home. Whatever sort of boiler you use, only a full set of heating controls will enable it to work at its optimum efficiency. Over the next few pages, we ll show you some of the options available for creating a fully controllable fuel-efficient system. *
Reduce your carbon footprint
80% of heating systems in UK homes are missing controls.* *Energy Saving Trust
Understanding controls Heating controls will play as vital a part in cutting your bills and emissions as a condensing boiler. They ll ensure your boiler works in the most efficient way possible, and also enable you to create a heating system that works in harmony with your lifestyle. A basic set of heating controls comprises of: Time controller Temperature controller (Or combined time and temperature controller) Radiator controllers Hot water controller (if you have stored hot water) honeywelluk.com
The controls Time control Central to your system will be the device that switches the boiler on when you need heat and off when you don t. Ensuring the boiler is only on when necessary will save energy and money and the more controllable the system, the more you can save. Our controls range from the simplest 24 hour time switch to advanced digital thermostats that can be programmed for up to six switching times and choices of temperature for every day of the week. 7 million homes have no time control Temperature control Temperature is controlled by the room thermostat, which you can set to your ideal comfort level. Because an extra 1 C can add 10% to your fuel bill for the space you re heating, you should set your Honeywell thermostat to a low temperature first to establish the best setting. Most people can t notice changes in temperature within a comfort band of 3 C. 8.5 million homes have no temperature control Time and temperature control A single point of control for both the time and temperature of your heating system. These carry out the same function as a room thermostat and timer combined but it can also control to different temperatures at different times of the day. The CM900 range of programmable room thermostats contains energy saving features Optimum Start* and TPI Control**.
Radiator control Thermostatic radiator valves control the temperature in single rooms and are instantly adjustable allowing you to vary comfort levels from room to room in a one-zone system. 13 million homes have no radiator control. Hot water control If your hot water is provided by a heat exchange coil in the cylinder, a cylinder thermostat and valve will stop your cylinder overheating and limit the water temperature to the level you need for the comfort and safety of your family. With Honeywell s cylinder thermostats, you can use the knob to adjust water temperature or remove it altogether. Optimum Start* To save energy let the controls work out when to come on to suit when you want to be warm. Every day the boiler will start at the latest possible moment depending on the weather. Wireless enabled A wireless enabled programmer allows you to have a room thermostat fitted using no wires. Or a cylinder thermostat or both. Not only can you have a thermostat fitted easily, but it is a high efficiency TPI thermostat to get the best out of any boiler. TPI control** Time Proportional and Integral control is a method of calculating the demand from a room thermostat, controlling the boiler so that it fires for shorter periods as the temperature approaches the set point. Save up to 10% energy over traditional On/Off control. BERR honeywelluk.com
Tailor your heating to suit your lifestyle
Zoning your home Unless you live in a very small flat, there will be areas of your house that don t need as much heating as others at certain times of the day. By using zoning valves, you can split your house into separate heating areas with different heating times and temperatures for each. This means you can heat your living room all day but your bedrooms just in the morning, isolate seldom-used areas or provide extra warmth to a granny flat or nursery. Thanks to Honeywell wireless controls, you can create a flexible zoned heating system without needing to worry about disruptive wiring. You can even control radiator thermostats wirelessly, so your zones don t need to be determined by the layout of pipe work in your home. Zoning distributes heat more intelligently and economically than a single-zone system. It s like having a light switch in every room as opposed to a single switch that lights the whole house. With a master control, you can synchronise every zone to ensure the boiler only fires the minimum number of times. honeywelluk.com
Making the most out of your system
Reduce your carbon footprint further Even with a controllable and efficient system in place, there are a number of ways you can do more to limit your home s impact on the environment. Proper insulation through double glazing, wall and roof insulation will limit the amount of heat loss in your house and save extra energy. Just insulating your loft will save the average home 110 a year. It s also worth fitting your water tank with a Kitemarked insulating jacket, and insulating the pipes between your boiler and hot water cylinder. Another way to lower household emissions is to introduce low carbon fuels to your system. Ground source heat pumps transfer natural warmth from outside air or beneath the ground into the home. In the average well insulated home, a typical system can produce much of the heat necessary and save 800 a year on heating bills. Solar panels work alongside your conventional system, transferring the sun s energy from the roof to your hot water cylinder. In an average home with a south-facing roof, solar energy will take care of a third of hot water needs. Biomass is a carbon neutral fuel made from plants and wood waste. It requires the installation of a special biomass boiler, but could cut your CO2 emissions by 8 tonnes a year. honeywelluk.com
