Strategically positioned at the crossroads of both western and eastern sea routes, the island nation continues to be a favorite destination when visiting South Asia. The country attracts tourists from across the globe; inbound tourist arrivals in the country reached over 856,000 in Inbound spending in the country increased from US$750 million in 2007 to US$1.3 billion in 2011, registering a CAGR of 140.6%. Foreign exchange receipts per tourist per day registered an annual growth of 8.4% to reach US$88 in Asia-Pacific and Europe remain the major source regions for inbound tourists in Sri Lanka, together accounting for over 85% of the total inbound visits in the review period. India continues to be the primary source market, accounting for around 20% of the inbound traffic, followed by the UK and Germany with over 15% and 5% respectively.
