2 Year 7 Media Studies Welcome to Yr 7 Media Studies. In this introductory course you will be learning about the Media in society and experimenting with the creation of media texts. Your tasks will give you the opportunity to develop your skills in the Arts learning area outcomes and you will be assessed on the course based on these tasks. Outcome 1 Arts Ideas Students generate arts works that communicate ideas. This is demonstrated when the student: - Understands the use of symbols to communicate ideas - Create texts within a given structure and form Outcome 3 Arts Responses Students use their aesthetic understanding to respond to, reflect on and evaluate the arts. This is demonstrated when the student: - Can identify the features and elements of media presentations that are effective and those that are not - Understand the use of advertising techniques to influence the community COURSE OUTLINE Throughout your time in Yr 7 Media you will be asked to complete two tasks. These are opportunities for you to demonstrate your understanding of the ideas presented in the class and your ability to use specific media techniques. The tasks you will complete are: Print Advertising Digital Photography Portfolio Introduction The study of Media relies on a shared understanding between the audience and the creators of media texts. This understanding is based on some techniques (codes) and some accepted ways of doing things (conventions). [2]

3 Year 7 Course Outline Assessment Task Marks Theory Analysis of print advert This task involves analysing several Print advertisements and looking at the way that images have been created using such things as: Camera Angles Colour Models (people) Lighting Print advertisement This task involves designing a print advertisement of a product that is targeted at members of the opposite sex Introduction to basic media concepts Advertising image creation presentation of gender in advertising Use of peripheral devices Digital Photography presentation of the school using images not words to present an idea This task requires the students to create a pictorial presentation of Bunbury Cathedral Grammar school. An introduction to Composition techniques will be covered 30 Use of the digital camera Image Editing Programs Peripherals Compositional Techniques and other methods of improving the impact of images will be done including: framing, angles, lighting, etc Media Outcomes 1 Media Ideas Students generate media works that communicate ideas. 2 Media Skills and Processes Students use the skills, techniques, processes, conventions and technologies of the media. 3 Media Responses Students use their aesthetic understanding to respond to, reflect on and evaluate the media. 4 Media in Society Students understand the role of the media in society.

4 Activity Use the internet to complete the following: The word media means Some examples of media texts in our society are Media in our society is predominantly made up of images (moving or still) that convey a certain message or meaning to the viewer. The study of how these images are created is important for an understanding of the media course. Image Creation All pictures (images) are created that is they are deliberately put together for a specific purpose. Therefore, choices need to be made about what is put into the frame of a picture and what isn t. The choice to include or not is important because it will determine the appeal of the product or message to the target audience. (Those for whom the message/product is aimed at) Thus, in the case of advertising, if the image doesn t grab the audience s attention, the advertisement won t work and the product won t sell. To include or not to include Many things need to be considered when an image is being created. These include; MODELS what are the people in your image going to look like, what should they wear, whom should they represent, what body language do you need to consider and so on? For example, to create the image of a family you would need 2 adult and 2 children models, in a lounge room, in normal clothes, smiling and sitting close to each other. Discuss with someone in the class, 2 other situations where the use of particular models can be used to assist in getting the message across or adding appeal to a product. [3]

5 CAMERA ANGLES the position of the camera or angle at which an image is taken can improve the impact of an image The different types of camera angles are listed in the table below: For each type of camera angle provide a brief description of its intended purpose or effect. 6 COLOURS are generally accepted as symbolic for something. In the spaces below write down what you think the use of each colour could help portray in an advertisement or movie. What sort of impression do you think could be achieved if the camera or image was slightly out of focus? [5]

7 TIME different times of day have generally recognised associations. What impression would be obtained by an image that has: a setting sun with a couple staring at the horizon Bright sunlight, a blazing sun directly overhead. moonlight from full moon set in a forest with weird looking trees LIGHTING can also have an effect on the image created: Lighting Effect bright light shadow moonlight spotlight SETTING The location of the objects in the frame eg: room with lounge chairs and TV Can you recall any examples where the setting of an image relates to the message that the poster or image is trying to get across? 8 Activity 1 Using a magazine or newspaper, find an advertisement and identify what image has been created and which of the above techniques have been used to create this image. Mark /5 [7]

10 Print Advertising Advertisements that are in print that is, found in newspapers, magazines, billboards and so on, are called print advertisements. These are a very common form of advertising and are heavily dependent on images. Print advertisements follow certain patterns for the layout. These patterns are related to the way that we look at a page. Generally speaking we will look at a page in a certain order without even thinking about it. In the box below draw a series of lines that indicate how a person looks at a page. What do you think that this might mean for someone who is designing an advertising poster. [9]

11 A basic plan of how an advertisement is set up this way to follow the natural scan of the human eye. Slogan Image Product description Logo Some examples how we can place things on a page include the following. [10]

12 Activity You are to design your own print advertisement, advertising a product targeted at the members of the opposite sex. You will need to consider what image for the product you wish to create and how you intend to describe the product to make it attractive to your target audience. Please do not use a product that already exists or a famous face to promote your product. List down what you think are some of the things that you need to think about that will appeal to your target audience. Use the space below to show some of your ideas and planning. [11]

13 Year 7 Media Year 7 Advertisement Evaluation. Referring back to your notes that you worked on in Term 1 you are now required to evaluate your advertisement according to some of the techniques that were covered. What have you done or included to create an advertisement that has maximum impact? What techniques have you used to make the viewer want to buy your product? Why have you used these to target the particular audience? To determine the degree of success of your advertisement you also need to test it on your audience. Keep in mind that your target audience is primarily members of the opposite gender. Your audience will be asked to state whether the actual product is clearly identified. What aspects of the advertisement make it an appealing advertisement for your product. Can your target audience identify any of the techniques that you have used? Each advertisement needs to be analysed by 3 members of the target audience and their thoughts and impressions recorded. Year 7 Advertisement Evaluation 1

14 Year 7 Media What you need to do. Evaluation of your advertisement 1. Describe the techniques that you have considered. a. For example I have used a healthy looking young man that has extremely shiny and fantastic looking teeth as a model for my brand of toothpaste. b. The setting is in a super cool looking bathroom that is sparkling white and new. c. The name of my product is in the top left corner so that when the person looks at it they automatically see the name than their eyes go to the great set of teeth that my model has. 2. Describe why you think the technique will appeal to the members of the target audience. a. For example. I have used a really good looking model with awesome teeth because girls are always thinking about the way that they look. A great set of shiny teeth on a healthy model will make the person think Wow I can look like that if I use this toothpaste. If I used someone popular it would be even better say Justin Beiber because every girl in the universe just love him. b. By using a really flash bathroom gives the feeling that rich and well off people use it so it must be good c. The colour of the text is also white and stands out. It gives the feeling of newness, cleanliness, freshness. Evaluation of other advertisements. You now need to look at a minimum of 3 other advertisements and think about the questions below. Write down your thoughts. What is the advertisement trying to sell? Can you identify any techniques that have been used in this advertisement? Do you think that the advertisement is effective? If so why? If not why not? Suggest some possible improvements that could be made to the advertisement? What to Hand In You will need to present your evaluation as a word document. This word document should have Your name in the Header The file name and page number in the footer. Save the document as yourname Advertising Evaluation.doc This should be saved into your H drive. 17 Digital Photography Sometimes only images are used to present an object or ideas about an object to the audience. This is achieved when the creators of media texts manipulate techniques of image, colour, setting and so on to encourage a particular reaction from their audience. Activity Compile a portfolio of digital photographs that give the audience an impression of Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School. You can present the school in any way you wish, provoking whatever reaction you like in your audience. You are only restricted by your imagination and a few basic ground rules: 1) Cameras are restricted from all toilet and change room areas 2) You cannot disrupt another class without discussing with the teacher first. 3) You are not to interrupt Primary Classes without asking permission. 4) You will behave with decorum at all times outside the class or you will have to try to complete this assignment in the classroom. This is your opportunity to demonstrate how creative you can be so don t take photos of the same things as your friends you won t look very original. This is also an opportunity for you to demonstrate what you understand about image/angles/lighting/colours and the choices that need to be made when framing a shot. You should plan to take a minimum of 8, maximum of 12 photos to complete your portfolio. Use the boxes on the next page to show your ideas and planning. Your images should be: Presented electronically using Microsoft PowerPoint. One image per page You will need to include some information about each image and what you are trying to achieve and how you attempted to achieve this. This should be included on the last slide of your PowerPoint presentation Mark /15 [14]

20 The big test will be whether one of your friends can work out what you are trying to achieve with the images. Have a friend write down what they think of your images below. How effective were they? [17]

25 Repetition Make all of the slides look the same by using the same elements on each page Place images and text in the same location on each page Keep images the same size.

26 Simplicity Keep the presentation simple. Don t detract from the images that you have taken. Allow the image to tell the story or get the image across. Use basic borders. Use simple fonts Remember the KISS principle.
