1 Lesson at a Glance Lesson Objectives The children will describe Jesus as caring and compassionate. The children will describe how the widow of Nain might have felt to have her son back. The children will make a story book to use to share the Bible Story with a friend. 2 Pre class CT I V IT Picture Picture-1 The children will get a preview of the Bible Story as they color pictures for the Craft Center. Instructions 1. Give each child a set of pictures to color. Materials 2. Have the children glue each picture onto an index card. For each child: 3. Have the children put their finished pictures in an envelope. 4 index cards, 3" x 5" 4. Help each child put their name on the outside of their envelope. crayons or markers 5. Give the envelopes to the Craft teacher. 1 letter size envelope NOTE: Make an extra set of pictures for the Craft teacher to use to glue stick make a model of the craft. For the teacher: Conclusion scissors Reproducible Pages: sk the children to tell you what they think is happening in the Page, 1 copy for each child story. Explain that these are pictures of the story that they will be hearing in the Bible Story Center. Preparation Teacher Tips 1. Cut out the pictures from the copies of Reproducible Page. 3 B ib l e S tor y Wake Up! The children will act out the story of the widow of Nain and will experience what Jesus compassion might have been like. Lesson Text Luke 7:11-17 Materials For the teacher: Bible tissues black or blue scarf (for the mother) a large bed sheet (dark color) 2 black T-shirts (the pallbearers) Preparation Familiarize yourself with the story. Healing Touch Choose a child for each of the following parts: Jesus, a widow, a son, two pallbearers. Place the scarf on the widow s head and dress the two pallbearers in black T-shirts. Have the son lie on the floor and have the two pallbearers hold the sheet in front of him so the other children can not see him. Have the widow stand next to the sheet and pretend to cry. Open your Bible to Luke 7: Jesus went to a town called Nain. Have Jesus and his disciples start walking slowly towards the widow. s he got near the town gate he saw a widow crying (Luke 7:11-12). Why do you think she was crying? llow the children to respond. Jesus knew that the widow s only son had died. Explain to the children that a widow is someone whose husband has died. Jesus was very sad for the widow. He was compassionate toward her and said, Don t cry (Luke 7:13). Have the child portraying Jesus say Don t cry. to the widow. Why was Jesus sad for the widow? llow the children to respond. How do you feel when someone is sad or gets hurt? llow the children to respond. Jesus was sad because the widow s son was dead. He was sad because the widow was so sad. Jesus walked up to the coffin. Have Jesus walk to the sheet. He said, Young man, I say to you, get up! (Luke 7:14). Have Jesus say the same thing. What do you think will happen now? Well the young man sat up. Have the two children lower the sheet to the floor and sit down with the others as part of the audience. The young man sat up and began to talk. Then he got up and went to his mother (the widow) (Luke 7:15). Have the son stand up and go to the mother. Wow, Jesus healed the boy. Isn t that great! ll the people around them were very surprised and happy. Have everyone hug each other happily. Why do you think everyone is so happy? llow the children to respond. Someone said, great man of God is here with us. God has come to help us (Luke 7:16). Do you think this was true? llow the children to respond. Did God come to help them? llow the children to respond. fter this many people knew about Jesus because people told their friends what had happened (Luke 7:17). Do you think Jesus did a good thing by helping the widow? llow the children to respond. Conclusion sk the children the following questions to review the story: Why was the woman crying? (her son had died) How did Jesus feel? (sad for the woman, compassionate) What did Jesus do? (healed him, told the boy to get up) How did everyone feel when they saw the boy was alive? (happy) What did people do? (they told others about Jesus) What town did Jesus heal the widow s son in? (Nain) Teacher Tips Do not focus on the idea of death or the coffin but on Jesus concern for the widow because she was sad. If you have small centers the teacher can play the role of Jesus. Have the children glue sequins on the exposed parts of the frame as decorations. Conclusion Have the children retell the story using the pictures as their guide. Mark 1:41 Lesson Plan Greeting and Registration Preclass ctivities: Willing Hearts Welcome and Singing Centers: Game: I Know Craft: Hand Book Life pplication: Don t Cry NOTE: Be sure to allow sufficient time for a snack. Pre class CT I V IT Willing Hearts The children will decorate hearts to give to their friends. The hearts represent Jesus willing heart to help others. Materials For each child: 1 piece of colored construction paper, 9" x 12" crayons or markers glue stick For the teacher scissors fabric, yarn, colored paper scraps Reproducible Pages: Page B, 1 copy for the teacher Preparation 1. Cut out the heart stencil from the copy of Reproducible Page B. 2. Fold each piece of colored construction paper in half. 3. Trace and cut out one heart for each child. NOTE: Line up the flat edge of the stencil against the folded edge of the paper. fter you trace and cut out the heart, then open the paper. Instructions 1. rrange the children in small groups. 2. Give each child a heart and have them decorate it using the fabric, yarn and paper scraps. Conclusion Encourage the children to give their hearts to someone that they care for or someone that needs encouragement. Jesus gave his heart to people by loving them and caring for them. We can be like Jesus by loving and caring for the people around us. Teacher Tips Choose other decorative materials for the children to decorate their hearts. 10 supplement G G a a M M e e I Know This game will reinforce the idea of helping others and caring about how they feel. Materials For the teacher: a large ball (basketball or volleyball) a time keeper (an hourglass or watch with a second hand) Preparation Familiarize yourself with the questions for the game. Create any new questions that may apply to the children in your class. Instructions 1. Seat the children in a circle. 2. Explain the rules of the game to the children. 3. Give a child the ball. sk the child a question from the list below. They have ten seconds to answer the question. 4. If they can not answer the question, have that child hand the ball to the person next to them. Have the next child try to answer the same question. 5. If they answer the question ask them if they want to try another question or pass the ball. 6. Continue asking each child a question until everyone has had a few turns. Questions: If you had a new toy and your friend wanted to play with it, would you share your toy with your friend? If you shared your toy how would your friend feel? How does Jesus feel when we share? Why was the woman in the story sad? (her son had died) What did Jesus do for the woman? (healed her son) How did the woman feel about having her son back? If someone is crying what should we do? Conclusion Remind the children of how Jesus was sad for the widow and had compassion on her. Jesus always took the time to help people. It makes Jesus and God happy when we help our friends and family too. Teacher Tips If a child missed the Bible Story ask them a basic question that they would know the answer to. 11 supplement C Hand R FT Book This book is another way of having the children visualize the Bible Story and share their faith. Materials: For each child: 2 pieces of construction paper, 9" x 12" crayons or markers glue stick For the teacher: scissors pen or fine point marker Reproducible Pages: Page, 1 copy for each child Page C, 1 copy for the teacher Preparation 1. Cut out the pictures from the copies of Reproducible Page. 2. Cut out the hand stencil from the copy of Reproducible Page C. 3. Trace and cut out four hands for each child from construction paper. 4. Make a model of the craft following the instructions. Instructions 1. Show the children the model of the craft. Briefly retell them the Bible Story using the model of the craft. 2. Give each child a set of pictures from Reproducible Page. 3. Have the children color the pictures. 4. Give each child four hands. Help the children to line up the hands and help them to staple them together at the palms. See Figure. 5. Help the children to arrange their pictures in the order that they occurred in the Bible Story. 6. Have the children glue the pictures onto the hands in the correct order. See Figure B. 7. Have the children decorate their book covers. Conclusion Have the children retell the story using their books. Encourage them to tell the story to their friends and to invite them to Bible Class.
