2 Why does Norwich School do Community Service? It is a fantastic way of investing in the community in and around the Close and Norwich. By creating partnerships with different organisations we are also able to invest in our pupils broad and varied education. It adds to the foundations of scholarly young people through providing the opportunity to appreciate the experiences of others. Why do you do Community Service? Being involved in your community acts as a pivot for your career. It may confirm what course you want to do at university or job. Equally it may encourage you to look in to a completely new direction. It offers you experience for your CV of leadership and service. It will change your perspective in more ways than one.

3 The Options Art + Design A key creative option is available this year. The Art and Design department are developing a range of creative opportunities for students interested in developing their skills. Archaeology This is an opportunity to shape a local history project in a village where students from Norwich School have been working for some time on a variety of archaeology and local history projects. The projects have included audio and film work. There is an opportunity to learn extensive research and presentation skills Archives - Norwich School Over the last two years students in the Sixth form have worked in the Norwich School archives retrieving stories for publication and exhibitions including the Norwich School in the World War. This work is continuing and this option will work on specific historical projects. Aspect Film This option will allow you to learn about film making, editing and be involved in recording events in the life of Norwich School and beyond. This would particular suit students interested in graphics and photography. Big C This charity is aimed at helping those with cancer in Norfolk. The role will help you develop a wide range of business and interpersonal skills. You will be working in the charity s shops. Care for Children Care for Children is an international organisation based in the Cathedral close. They work with national governments, mainly in Asia, to get orphaned children out of institutions and into foster families. The charity is expanding quickly and needs creative help with its communications. Also you will be able to take part in the Young Ambassadors Programme - and perhaps travel as part of a team to China to volunteer in their work there. Cathedral As you would expect there are a wide range of options at the Cathedral from being trained as a guide showing people around the Cathedral to working in the Library with its amazing collections. There are creative opportunities, too, including working with textiles. You will be able to take part in a range of activities, or focus on just one.

4 Care Homes Every year students volunteer in local care homes such as Chiswick House and the Hawthorns taking part in a wide range of activities with the residents such as board games, music, reading, creating recollection folders. This is an option that is open to all but those thinking of careers in medicine, nursing or similar jobs should consider this or a similar option. City Centre Projects including Sports Outreach Here you will be involved in a wide range of projects in the local community from running sporting activities to more practical activities such as gardening for older residents and painting. Already this year the students have helped to run a RWC 2015 Family Fun Event for over 350 people and will be helping with a half term sports camp too. Community Music Each year musicians from the sixth form go to play concerts at local schools and care homes. This option runs on a games afternoon - usually Tuesdays. You would practice and prepare for concerts on you Community Service afternoon and then rehearse as part of a group on Tuesdays or perform on that day. Connects and Co This organisation supports young carers who have to look after their ill parents. There are options that take place within school time and also activities outside the school day such as a vibrant youth club. You would have time to work at school if you were volunteering outside school time. Corton House Corton House is a care home in Norwich. Norwich school students have worked here for a number of years. There is a wide range of activities for students to get involved with and support and training. In previous years students have been involved in creative projects, music and games. This is a great option for those thinking of careers in medicine, nursing or similar jobs. Conservation and Allotments There are a number of sites where the school is involved in range of continuing conservation projects. This popular option includes things such as maintaining habitats for wildlife and improving woodland. Also this year there will be a chance to develop the already thriving Wildflower enterprise. Creative Writing This option will involve developing creative writing ideas for a range of different groups including residents at care homes and primary school groups then taking part in leading those creative writing activities.

5 Dance Dance within community service offers individuals the chance to be trained to teach, choreograph and develop an understanding of how dance production is constructed and realized in performance. There is the opportunity to run the lower school dance club, take your ideas out to local primary school workshops and be part of the planning of the Dance Festival. Drama - Spiral The Spiral club continues again this year with opportunities to take part in teaching junior pupils and to help devise and run programs. A wide range of students would suit this option and in particular those involved in Theatre Studies. Edith Cavell Day Care Centre This popular option is run at a local day centre. The centre helps meet the needs of older people in the community - it provides activities such as reminiscence, craft and music. Great Hospital The Great Hospital has a number of older residents who would love to help with using the internet on their laptops, tablets and computers generally. Hall Special School Play + learning sign language Again this year students will prepare a play with students for the Hall School. The Hall School is a school in Norwich for students with significant and complex needs such as severe learning needs. The play will be performed as part of the Arts Festival. As ever there will be chances to prepare for and, take part in, the Special Schools Carol Service in the Cathedral, and to learn sign language too. Leonard Cheshire Home This is a popular and challenging option where you will help with the activities programme for the residents with physical disabilities. Nancy Oldfield Sailing Trust Students will be able to support the Trust s sailing and boating work with disabled and socially disadvantaged people on the Broads. This option may take place outside school hours sometimes. NANSA This local charity provides a wide range of opportunities for people of all ages with physical and learning disabilities. You can be involved in a broad spectrum of work such as helping in their shops or social media or other creative work or setting up events. Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind The NNAB has a wide range of activities for students to be involved with, such as helping the residents with using IT or taking part in games.

6 Peace/Rotary - student run Peace (formally known as PeaceJam UK) inspires students and gives them skills to; transform themselves, their local communities, and the world. Recent projects have included building a well in Liberia. Peer Supporters U6th Only This option is new for this year. If you are a peer supporter your Community Service periods will be set aside for Peer Supporter training, preparation for events and other activities. RDA - Thursdays only Riding for the Disabled is a very popular option. You will have training and help with riding classes for people with disabilities. La Casita - Latin American Charity Project Repton house will be supporting an orphanage in Argentina from next September. In this option you will be planning ways to raise funds, put on events and make links with this orphanage and the people connected with it. Rowing and Boathouse You will train as a sculling coach and then help junior, beginner scullers take their first strokes and develop their skills. This will involve working towards an internal Norwich School coaching qualification. RSPB Help with a unique project to develop a new RSPB reserve just outside Norwich. Further every year there are regular opportunities for placements with the RSPB. Students thinking of studying Biology or a similar subject at University might find this option helpful. Russian If you are keen on learning languages this is a great opportunity where you can learn Russian and then learn teaching and presentation skills by going into local primary schools and running workshops on the Russian language and culture. Scouts - Norwich School This option is based at Scout HQ. It involves preparing activities and equipment for Scout nights and events. You will learn a range of practical and organizational skills. This would be suitable for Explorer Scouts but is not limited to them.

7 Schools Every year students are involved in working in local primary schools. The activities range from helping in class activities to sport and to creative options such as drama and art. This will give you experience with teaching and working with children. Street Child of Sierra Leone Street Child is a Community Service charity which works to get children living on the streets in West Africa into education and foster families. Here you would work with volunteers from the charity in preparing workshops and assemblies for local primary schools. There are other fundraising options too and some may even want to take part in the Street Child Marathon in Sierra Leone! Self-Generated If you have arranged a Community Service activity already for yourself or would like to do so then please speak with Mr Plater or Mr Watts on how this might link to the programe. Special Olympics (outside school) The Special Olympics movement works with children with special learning needs to help them take part in sport. This option would involve helping at activities outside school time - Skiing at Trowse and Tennis coaching and setting up an event have been done. Sport You will help Norwich School Sports staff in coaching school teams. In addition you will be able to work towards internal and external sports qualifications. School Club - History Club This option involves working with Mr Grant to prepare and run History activities in the History club. This would suit someone thinking of studying History at University. School Club - Herculites In this option you will help run a club which explores ancient civilization and mythology. You will be working with club members who are from the junior years. School Club - French Club You will work in the French department to help students in younger years develop their language skills with games and other fun activities.

8 Total Ensemble This activity is a drama workshop with an organization that brings together a diverse range of performers. You would be helping work with students from outside the school who have a range of physical disabilities in this exciting and challenging opportunity. You can be involved in supporting the drama workshop or perform in it. There are weekly workshops and rehearsals in Community Service time. If you would like to be involved in performances there are opportunities for that too. 9 What you thought It was rewarding to feel like we had been helpful. To know we had achieved in sup-porting a community Meeting new people was the best part The experience has been thoroughly enlightening Getting to know the residents and hear their stories Investing time to chat to the elderly, with whom I would not usually interact within everyday life Learning to work quickly and efficiently as a team It is rewarding to make a difference in someone s life The hard work means there is a sense of accomplishment Offering my time, so that the charity can continue completing the other significant tasks Something I really enjoy doing
