2 Samuel 14 14:1 Joab is concerned about the broken relationship between David and Absalom. He may be fearing that Absalom will start a rebellion against David. He decides to do something about it. 14:2, 3 Joab continues with his plan to have Absalom and David reconciled. Joab hopes to have David s heart touched by the Lord. He didn t trick them and throw them into a room together. 14:4, 5 This is a clever story. Joab hopes to have David s heart touched over the supposed sadness of the situation. 14:6, 7 In cases of either accidental or intention manslaughter, there were cities of refuge where the offender could flee until he would receive a fair trial. If the avenger of blood got to the offender before he arrived at a City of Refuge, then he could avenge the blood of the slain relative. This woman pleads for mercy, in that this supposed guilty son is her only remaining heir, and the family name would end. This would be an especially grievous event for a widow. Losing her last son, and having the family name end b/c of lack of descendants. 14:8-11 Guzik- David ignores the cause of justice for the sake of family sympathy and loyalty. In personal relationship it is a good and glorious thing to be generous with forgiveness and mercy when we are wronged. But David had a responsibility as the king and chief judge of Israel, and he was being tempted to forsake that responsibility. "He guaranteed safety at the expense of justice, and immediately the farsighted woman captured him in her trap." (Redpath) 14:12 The woman senses that she is making inroads with David, and hopes to bring the point home.

2 14:13 The point is this: you were willing to extend mercy to my guilty son for the sake of family relationships. Why won t you be merciful to Absalom? 14:14 Water spilled on the ground - speaks of the brevity of life, and that opportunities come and go, and sometimes we never get them back. The specific thing here is the effort to make reconciliation. David had not disciplined his son. He was guilty of the same things his own boys had done: sexual immorality and murder. David allowed Absalom s self imposed exile to serve as punishment enough. But David s heart longed for Absalom. Why not bring him back? He would still have to face disciplining his son, which he was very weak at doing. Absalom sinned greatly against him: he lied to him, and then killed his son. David is angry, hurt, and not wanting to deal with it. It was much easier to have Absalom out of sight and out of mind. David s unwillingness to deal with things prevented reconciliation. Absalom s unrepentance also prevented reconciliation. They were at a spiritual stalemate. Absalom had shown no signs of repentance, sorrow, etc. David wasn t going to initiate anything. v. 13 in that the king does not bring his banished one home again. v. 14 Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him. These verses speak of God s heart regarding reconciliation. That s why the Father sent the Son, to bring men to God. People are banished from God b/c of their sins. The means to bring them back to God was that the Son died for their sins.

God does not accomplish reconciliation by ignoring sin. He accomplishes it by naming sin, by paying for it Himself, and then receiving those who come to him in faith. Those who come, having admitted their sins, and being unable to pay for their sins, accept God s terms of forgiveness. Jesus death on the cross for them. 3 David is going to allow Absalom to come home, but he will do it wrongly. They will never talk about Absalom s sin. David will ignore it, and continue on in a strained, hypocritical relationship with Absalom. Absalom will feel re-instated, without ever having to apologize or be repentant. This is not true reconciliation. This is moral and spiritual disobedience on the part of David. It is hypocrisy on the part of Absalom. We can, and should be gracious to those who have sinned. But there must be repentance, confession, and asking of forgiveness. The guilty party will learn that sin can be overlooked, and they will never feel the sting of sin of treated as though sin were not that important. 14:15-24 David is still not dealing with Absalom correctly. If he is going to bring him back, deal with the situation. Instead, he ignores him, which must have inflamed the situation even more. 14:25, 26 Absalom has some advantages according to worldly standards. He is handsome. So much so that he is more praised for his good looks than anyone else in Israel. King Saul was also favored by Israel because of his stature. He had beautiful hair, and he took great pride in it. How do we know that? He would cut it only because it was too heavy on his head. If he could have, he would have displayed his beautiful hair all the time. He cut it only because he couldn t physically handle the weight of it. 4 lbs. to 5 ½ lbs of hair.

4 14:27 Absalom and his sister Tamar were physically beautiful people. It is no surprise that Absalom had beautiful children. It is interesting that he names his daughter Tamar. He killed his half brother for raping his sister, who was named Tamar. Now he wants to keep that name in high profile. Was it his intention to flaunt his former actions by keeping the name Tamar ringing in people s ears? 14:28, 29 You would have hoped that Absalom would have wanted to see his father in order to reconcile, ask forgiveness, and talk openly and honestly with his father. Instead, we see that Absalom is a carnal man who simply wants to have his way. He doesn t want to be on the outs with anyone, even his father whom he has grown to despise. He doesn t want his father controlling his life. This desire to see David is impure and it is selfish. That will be proven over time. 1 Timothy 5:24, Some men s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. 25 Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden. 14:30, 31 Absaloms know how to get results, even if they need to use ungodly methods. 14:32 Absalom reveals his wicked heart. He wants his way, and will do whatever he needs to in order to accomplish his goals. He has come back to his father, but in a much different manner than the Prodigal son. The Prodigal son came back not asking for anything except to be a servant. Not demanding at all. Absalom comes back full of demands. NOTICE- The great spiritual words that Absalom uses regarding his guilt He says that he ought to be executed if he has done anything wrong. He is throwing it back onto his father. Yes, it was David s responsibility to bring judgment.

But where is Absalom confession, remorse, asking of forgiveness? When he killed his brother, he acted with self-determination. He is still acting with self-determination, even though he sounds so righteous in pleading his case. 5 You don t set a man s field on fire in order to set up a meeting for reconciliation and forgiveness. 14:33 David offered Absalom forgiveness without any repentance or resolution of the wrong. In personal relationships it is often a sign of love and graciousness to overlook a wrong. Proverbs 10:12 says, Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins. But as King of Israel this was more than a personal matter with David. He was the "chief judge" of Israel and David excused and overlooked Absalom's obvious crimes. It has been five years since Absalom has seen his father David. When his sister Tamar was raped by her half brother Amnon, David did nothing about it. For two years Absalom kept that in his heart, and plotted to kill his half brother, which he did. He was then in exile for another three years, until David allowed him to come back to Jerusalem, but even then David would not see him. After two years in Jerusalem, David finally agrees to se Absalom. Absalom has not seen David for 5 years. It has been 7 years since his sister was raped. There is a lot of bitterness in Absalom s heart. We shall see that it really wasn t in Absalom s heart to reconcile with his father. He wants to get revenge on his father, or punish his father. He will go on to slowly undermine his father s kingship. It is understandable why Absalom would have been angry with his father. It is indefensible that he allowed this much bitterness to build up in his heart. He is guilty of murder, and soon, he will be guilty of treason, conspiracy, and leading a rebellion against the man that God chose to lead the nation. Redpath- "David's forgiveness of Absalom was completely inadequate, leading to a further outbreak of sin. God's forgiveness of a man's soul is completely adequate, and a great deterrent to continued sin." "May God write it on your soul: if the pardon you want is that God should wink at your sin, He will not do it." WE MUST ALSO KEEP IN MIND These are the consequences of David s sin. This is what God said was going to happen to his family, because of the adultery and murder that David committed re. Bathsheba and her husband Uriah.

Therefore the woman said, Please, let your maidservant speak another word to my lord the king. And he said, Say on.
