Increased our Variety of USDA Fruit this school year for the Parfaits. Students love them! NorthEast HS- Developing a student lead wellness corner. Students assemble the parfaits to order for their peers. 10

16 USDA Foods: Assisting School Lunch while Supporting American Agriculture Nationwide USDA Supports American Agriculture USDA has a dual mission of providing healthy food and supporting American farmers. All products purchased are grown, processed, and packaged in the United States or its territories. USDA Foods are local to someone. The United States agricultural system supplies a variety of nutritious foods for schools such a fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meats, fish, eggs, nuts and dairy.

17 USDA Foods: Assisting School Lunch while Supporting American Agriculture Nationwide USDA Foods provides healthy foods to schools by: Purchasing more than two billion pounds of food from American farmers each year. Meeting strict food safety and nutrition standards and using 100% American grown foods. Providing high quality meals to more than 30 million student a day. Adding versatility and being an economical way to provide our Nation s children with appealing meals.

18 USDA Foods: Assisting School Lunch while Supporting American Agriculture Nationwide Serving up Nutritious Options in Schools USDA Foods include a wide variety of high quality vegetables, fruits, dairy products, whole grains, lean meats and other protein options. USDA Foods support the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the school meal pattern requirements to make it easier for schools to prepare healthy meals. In recent years, USDA has reformulated products in every food category to lower the levels of sodium, sugar, and fat and to help offer nutrient-dense, kid friendly meals

19 SFSP, Breakfast & Snack Summer Food Service Program is funded at the rate of less than 1 cent on the tray and the Breakfast and Snack programs do not receive any entitlement for USDA Foods.

20 New Mexico NSLP Entitlement Entitlement Distribution Every school in the state of New Mexico that participates in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is entitled to USDA Foods to assist in their Child Nutrition Programs. 20

21 New Mexico NSLP Entitlement Entitlement Distribution Entitlement is allocated to each school based on Average Daily Lunch Participation (ADP) for October, which is provided to the Food and Nutrition Services Bureau (FANS) by the Public Education Department, Student Nutrition Bureau. (PED, SNB) 21

22 New Mexico NSLP Entitlement Meal rate + FNS adjustment NSLP & Seamless Summer Option Last year New Mexico schools served 36,021,634 lunches = $10,878,024 of entitlement to equally distribute. This year the combined rate is $.3044 per lunch. 22

23 New Mexico NSLP Entitlement Breakfast and Snack Programs are not funded to receive USDA Foods. However, USDA Foods can be used in both programs.. 23

24 New Mexico NSLP Entitlement Meal rate plus FNS adjustment Summer Food Service Program Last year NM schools and private non profits served 1,995,550 lunches = $29, of entitlement to equally distribute. This year the rate is $.015 per meal. 24

25 Benefits of Utilizing USDA Foods USDA Foods could account for up to 30 cents on the lunch tray. Healthy options are made available to our schools Direct Delivered: Over 60 different foods arrive ready to deliver to schools. Ordered in the Spring for the following school year. Single serving products are a perfect fit for Breakfast After the Bell, Snack and Summer Food Programs.

26 Benefits of Utilizing USDA Foods DoD Fresh - The Department of Defense Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program allows schools to use USDA Foods entitlement dollars to buy fresh produce. DoD allocations can be increased throughout the year. There is not a cap on the amount of entitlement used for this program. Many more options available during the summer months.

27 Benefits of Utilizing USDA Foods Diversion for Further Processing Schools have the option to divert a portion of the USDA Foods for further processing. Fee for Service: Schools that divert for processing have to pay a fee for service for the end products that are received such as Pizza, Cooked Hamburger Patty, Chicken Nuggets, breakfast sandwich, breakfast burrito. 27

28 How else can USDA Foods help? Schools use 100% of their entitlement. Inventory remains low and there is less of a chance for food loss. USDA Foods help to meet the meal pattern. Low sodium, reduced sugar, whole grain are just a few of the many options available.

29 USDA Foods Deliveries NM School Food Authorities are not charged for the storage or delivery of USDA Foods. Our FANS Bureau trucks make 1 delivery per month to each approved School Food Authority (SFA). All deliveries must be verified and signed for at the time of delivery. This transfers the ownership of the USDA Foods from the FANS Bureau to the SFA. NM Summer Food Service Program Sponsors receive 1 delivery the first week of June. 29
