1 COURSE SYLLABUS spring 2017 COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: SPAN 1411 Beginning Spanish I, Dual Enrollment Class COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to the Spanish language. Students perform the most basic of functions of the language and become familiar with some of the elements of its culture. The emphasis is based on the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills which promote meaningful language practice. The curriculum of this intense, college-level-class is intended to reinforce and sharpen students language and critical thinking skills across three communicative modes; interpersonal, interactive, and presentational. Write effective sentences in Spanish. 3. Write effective paragraphs in Spanish. 4. Translate English sentences into Spanish. 7. Write dialogue using Spanish vocabulary words. 16. Accommodate cultural diversities in oral and written communication. 19. Apply active listening skills. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Engage in conversations using level-appropriate grammatical structures including narrating events that take place in the past. 2. Demonstrate understanding of level-appropriate spoken Spanish produced by Spanish speakers of diverse origins. 3. Write simple to moderately complex sentences using level-appropriate grammatical structures and organize them into cohesive paragraphs. 4. Read and comprehend level-appropriate authentic texts. 5. Identify and discuss traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic world. 6. Compare and contrast the traditions, customs and values of the Hispanic word with characteristics of their own culture. COURSE SCHEDULE: (Subject to amendment by your instructor as required). Topic/Lecture/Event Unit 1. Introduction. Greeting People. Identify vocabulary about greeting and leave-taking. Learn how to identify nouns and articles. Introducing myself activity. (Critical Thinking, Communication) Students will synthesize personal information to introduce themselves to both the instructor and the class.

GRADING CRITERIA: The final grade for the course will be determined as follows: Test/Quizzes: 30% Daily Assignments/Homework: 15% Projects: 35% Six weeks exams: 20% GRADING SCALE: A B C D 0-59 F CLASS POLICIES: While in this class you are expected to follow these basic rules: 1. Be in your seat, ready to work, when the class bell rings. 2. Bring all required materials to class each day. 3. Follow instructions the first time they are given. 4. Participate responsibly in classroom activities and discussions. 5. Cell phones are not allowed in class. 6. No food or gum allowed in class, only bottle water. 7. Demonstrate academic honesty in all of your class work in the following ways a. Do your own work do not copy assignments or answers b. Do not allow others to copy your work c. Be truthful about reasons for missing assignments, tests, etc. 8. Follow rules according to the student handbook

5 Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to be in class and on time each class day. Attendance, punctuality, participation and a positive mental attitude are fundamental to a successful learning environment. There are no excused absences or tardies. It is your obligation to be on time for class. Late attendance is disruptive to general class atmosphere and participation. Only absences of an extreme nature may be excused and must be corroborated in writing by an appropriate authority (hospital, doctor). Absence from class does not excuse you from the responsibility of class assignments completed during your absence. Finding out the information and assignments is the responsibility of the student! Late assignments will not be accepted for consideration. Participation: Class participation, Students must actively participate in class work, and score within the designated passing range to satisfactorily complete the course. There are no make-up exams! Students absent during exams, including the final or any other graded assignment, will receive a grade of F (=0). GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM ASSESSMENT: Assignments from this course are subject to being archived for general education assessment. Procedures will follow protocols as prescribed by the research guidelines of the Association for Institutional Research. Classroom protocol: Do not bring food or gum into the classroom. Beverages can be brought to class. However, student is responsible for cleaning up any possible spills. Do not bring cell phones or any other electronic devices to class, unless they are turned off. Do not leave room during class. It is disruptive! NOTE: Any changes to this syllabus will be informed to students in the classroom
