2 Frequently asked questions about reading Is it important to read at home? Yes very All children benefit from reading at home. It is noticed by all teachers that children who read regularly at home make more progress with reading. What is appropriate reading material? Anything with text It is important that children are able to choose a range of different materials. This could include comics, news papers, magazines etc. Children will benefit greatly from a range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction. If there is a particular area or topic that your child is interested in, try to encourage them to read by finding books etc. related to the subject. How long should we spend reading? This really depends on the individual child. Some children are happy to read for longer periods while others may need more encouragement Little and often is the best strategy. Remember this does not have to be a school reading book; it can be any reading material. When should I hear my child read? Try to create a calm, relaxed and quiet environment. Make sure that it s the only thing you re doing and give your full attention to your child. Just before bed is often a good time, you could take it in turns to read a book before bed. Even when children are independent readers it is still important to share ideas and thoughts about books. Try to keep it cool It s important not to get fed up if your child needs to practise things over and over again. 2

3 Is it O.K to read the same book more than once? This is a great way to build confidence. It is particularly important to explore books several times. Books can be explored further by discussing characters, making predictions and asking questions. I am worried about my child s reading what should I do? The best thing to do is make an appointment to see your child s teacher. They will be happy to discuss any concerns that you have. How can I be a positive reading role model? Show an interest in reading. Talk with your child about books that you ve read and enjoyed. Make sure that reading has a high profile in your house-hold and be seen to read yourself. Is reading the same in every school? Different schools use different reading schemes and systems for the changing of books etc. However they all aim to do the same thing get children reading Do the children have to read a book from the reading scheme? No. It is important for children to read a wide variety of genres, from information given on a cornflakes packet to comics. Although children will bring home books from the reading scheme it is important that children don t think this is the only thing that they can read. What is a phoneme? A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a word. There are 44 phonemes in the English language, so as well as the individual sounds of the alphabet there are phonemes such as ee in see, ar as in car, oo as in balloon. (see separate sheet). My child can sound out a word but can t work out what it says. What shall I do? Read to the end of the sentence and see if they can work it out from that. Go back and read the whole sentence again and see if it makes sense. 3

4 If my child doesn t know a word in a reading book should I tell them? This depends on whether it is a reading book from school or another book. If it is relevant to their age and ability it is important for them to attempt the word or work it out from the context or illustration. Give the word only if they have made a good attempt to work it out. If appropriate help your child to see that they already know the biggest part of a word like play-ing, eat-en, walk-ed by breaking the word down. If they read or write out the part they know, you can finish it letter by letter. My child uses the picture to guess words, is that O.K? This is an excellent reading skill to encourage alongside the use of phonics and context. My child has just started reading, how can I improve their confidence? Give them every opportunity to show off their new skills to friends, relations etc. Make reading a positive experience and choose times when neither you nor your child are tired or busy. Does my child have to have a new reading book from school every day? No this is impractical from the school s point of view. It would disrupt the delivery of lessons as the process can be rather time consuming. Books from school should be only part of their reading experience. When will my child be heard reading in school? There are many forms of reading in school. These include: Independent reading either to an adult or on their own. Guided reading A group situation where every child has the same book at a level slightly more challenging than their independent reading. Children are guided by their teacher with a focus for each session. Shared reading The whole class sharing a big book or text on the interactive whiteboard. Silent reading reading alone quietly. 4

5 My child muddles up b and d when they are reading. Does it matter? Lots of children get letters that look alike, such as p and g, m and w, n and u confused. Concentrate on getting one letter right at a time. Help your child to listen to the different sounds and feel how they make them lips together for b, or apart for d. My child can read how can I help further? You can continue to give reading importance in many different ways; Still listen to them read. Research new reading material. Share and discuss reading/books you ve both read. Continue to model read to your child with expression and enjoyment. My child is a confident reader; do I still need to listen to them read? Yes, but maybe not whole texts. You could just listen to set passages to get a good idea of understanding. Encourage your child to ask you to explain words they don t understand. Is it alright for my child to read in their head? Yes. It encourages children to read longer books and with more speed. It can also offer greater depth of personal enjoyment. It is less threatening as children don t need to be word perfect but unknown words can still be worked out by skipping and reading on to gain meaning. What should my child do if they come across a word that they don t understand? Try breaking the word into phonemes then encourage your child to blend these together. If this doesn t work, leave the word and read on to the end of the sentence. Go back and make a guess using clues they ve picked up. 5
