The Scheldt twists and turns from source to mouth. al do eu rg a n 3. The Western Scheldt is a wide river, however the fairway is narrow. D 4. There are major differences in the water levels. Ships sail up and down the Scheldt within a tidal window. k 5. The river Scheldt is one of the busiest waterwaysin the world. Managing traffic To ensure that shipping can be smooth and safely carried out, an inten collaboration via information exchange is established between the partners (in the nautical chain). The Common Nautical Authority ensures the admittance policy. The pilot has control over one ship, while the VTS centre has an overview of the entire area and ensures efficient traffic to and from the port. 2. Underwater barriers create shallow areas. The are dredged to ensure that large ships can easily pass. termi n ctor Lo c Sea Antwerp
3 The operational floor MARITIME COMMUNICATION In the VTS centre, six VTS Operators and one VTS supervisor are working 24/7. The VTS Operators provide Vesl Traffic Services (VTS) to the mariners via the Scheldt Radar Network. This instrument consists of five manned VTS centres and 22 unmanned radar towers. The Scheldt Radar Chain are the eyes, ears and memory of the shipping traffic. The information from the VTS centre is shared with all partners involved through the Central Broker. For example; the ports via the port systems or pilotage through the Pilot Service Information System (LIS). The VTS Supervisor is responsible for co-ordinating the operational activities of the VTS Operators. The VTS supervisor has direct contact with the Antwerp Port Authority, the terminals, pilotage, agencies, Six VTS Operators monitor the whole area, 35 km from the Dutch part of the river to the Kallo lo (and with plans to continue to Antwerp road.) Through various channels on a Very High Frequency transmitter ( VHF) the VTS Operator is in contact with waterway urs for safety, traffic arrangements, information on los and terminals. In poor visibility any ship can get navigational assistance (on another radar channel). IVS PILOT FORMATION SYSTEM (LIS) CENTRAL BROKER SYSTEM PORT FORMATION SYSTEM
4 Behind the screens Radar The radar screens display the complete picture of the traffic situation on the river, even in the dark or in bad weather (eg. fog). A radar nds radio waves through an antenna and receives an echo containing data such as direction, distance and speed.the information comes from nine fixed radar nsors within this area, along with data from the Automatic Identification System AIS. Very High Frequency transmitter (VHF) Maritime communication is conducted through the Very High Frequency transmitter. The radio equipment is able to transmit and receive in the VHF band. Every hour the VTS Operators are transmitting an Information to Shipping. ctor 1 ctor 2 TRAFFIC CHANNEL 12 SID 85 SPEED DIAL PHONE 112 calamity Ship information Ship ETA MAERSK AVA headquarters fire station SPEED DIAL EDIT CONNECT DISCONNECT KALLO VAN CAUWELAERT BOUDEWIJN BERENDRECHT ZANDVLIET NAME VESSEL CALL SIGN LOA DPG EN EX ETA AUTOSKY CQQA WN DS 1200 MSC SOLA 3FER WN BD 1215 PCCD WN ZV 1300 NAME VESSEL CALL SIGN LOA DPG EN EX ETA MAERSK AVA SPR DD AW Deurgandolo vesl A vesl B AUTOSKY vesl G vesl H Berendrechtlo vesl I vesl J vesl K MSC SOLA vesl N vesl O Zandvlietlo vesl P vesl Q vesl R vesl S NORSTREAL WNW W WZW NW ZW NNW ZZW Z N 275-6btt NNO ZZO NO ZO Windblast ONO m/s O Windspeed OZO m/s dm LAT km The voyage information system (IVS) All inbound and outbound voyages by ships are indicated here. VTS Operators prevent a collision when danger is imminent: All ships, all ships, this is VTS centre Zandvliet with the Information to shipping at 16:30, water level: 45dm, wind: East 3, expected wind 1 to 2, possibility of fog Warning ship Ava warning, risk of collision, another ship Ilona 1000 metres 3 22 Traffic centre Zandvliet: Are there any casualties, injured or missing persons? How to become a VTS Operator? Shipping Assistance Division provides training for VTS Operators. In nine months you are trained via a variety of theoretical (meteorology, naval architecture, knowledge about the region and the regulations) and practical cours (sail a ship, on-the-job training, and practice on the simulator in Kallo). Prior nautical knowledge is not a must, a passion for the shipping is a plus.
