3 A. Safety 1) Wear appropriate particle dust mask during preparation and respirator during application. 2) Always read MSDS for all chemicals before using. B. Mats (daily) 1) Clean walk off mats at each entrance. C. Dust Mopping the Floor (daily) 1) A gym floor should be dust mopped every day, and also before and after each use. 2) Each gym floor should have its own clean dust mop. This mop should not be used on any other floor. 3) To remove traffic marks, soil, food stains, floor burns and other hard to remove stains, use Waterless Cleaner on these spots. Wipe these areas with a rag dampened with Waterless Floor Cleaner. 4) For light cleaning, treat a clean cotton dust mop with Waterless Cleaner. D. Waterless Cleaner How To Prepare A Tack Rag (bi-weekly) To insure a good finish, the floor must be absolutely free from all traces of dust and steel wool particles. A tack rag is excellent for picking up the fine particles that a vacuum can miss. A large gym floor will require from 4 to 6 tack rags. It s very easy to prepare a tack rag: 1) Use a lint-free, absorbent type of cloth such as heavy toweling. Fold the cloth lengthwise several times. 2) Pour waterless wood floor cleaner on the cloth and wring it out as dry as possible. 3) Wrap the cloth around a large clean push broom or clean, untreated dust mop. 4) Change the position of the cloth on the broom when it becomes soiled to insure maximum cleaning efficiency. Keep soil in front at all times. E. Recoat a Previously Finished Floor Abrasive Screen System (annually) This system is recommended for removal of surface scratches, to dull the gloss on previously finished floors, and to insure proper adhesion between coats. Screens, which are made of nylon mesh with a silicone carbide coating, are rated for their abrasive qualities with 80 grit being coarse, 100 grit, medium, and 120 grit, fine. Used under a thick line pad on a rotary floor machine, each screen can be utilized on approximately 500 square feet of surface (250 sq. ft. per side). 1) Sweep or vacuum the floor, remove gum, tar and tape with putty knife. Contact sales representative for instructions for removal of any wax, food, residual cleaner or mop treatment. 2) Remove the scratches with abrasive screen. Machine must be operated in a straight line, overlapping each pass to assure an even cut. This will also dull the gloss and smooth the surface, which will improve the adhesion and final appearance of the new finish. 3) Vacuum the entire floor, then tack rag at least twice to pick up all the fine dust that has been cut loose from the surface.
4 E. Recoat a Previously Finished Floor Abrasive Screen System (continued) 4) Apply one coat of finish with a lamb s wool applicator across the grain using a crisscross, right angle procedure. Allow the floor to dry 7 days before admitting gym traffic. * NOTE: Dry cleaning is still the only recommended and safe way to clean wood. Moisture is still the greatest enemy of wood floors. F. Humidity and Ventilation (general care) 1) Humidity and Ventilation are critical considerations for your new wood floor % relative humidity is normally required for long trouble-free life. If humidity rises to over 50%, prompt air circulation should be initiated by opening interior doors and windows and by activating the ventilating system. If less than 35% humidity level persists, use humidification to prevent excessive dryness and possible wood shrinkage. G. Keep Water Off The Floor Surface (general care) 1) Avoid exposure to water from tracking during periods of inclement weather by protecting your floors at exterior doorways. Floor protection should be checked thoroughly to assure no moisture is trapped underneath. Windows and doors should be closed during rainy weather. All leaks must be corrected immediately. H. How To Avoid A Bad Finish 1) Use applicators which are absolutely clean. 2) Always use an applicator pan. 3) Do not shake the finish, as it forms air bubbles. 4) Never attempt to rub the finish into the wood. Always flow it on in thin even coats. 5) Two thin coats of finish will give better results than one heavy coat. 6) Thoroughly clean application equipment with solvent after each application of finish. 7) Make certain there is fresh air ventilation for proper drying, and provide a dust-free atmosphere throughout the 7 day drying period.* 8) Allow final coat to dry at least 7 days before subjecting floor to Gymnasium activity.* 9) Soaps or gritty scrubbing powders should not be used in your preparation procedures because they are difficult to rinse and can result in product failure. 10) Check all equipment prior to use and clean it immediately after use. 11) Clean every lamb s wool applicator before using. New applicators often contain loose fibers which could mar the appearance of the coating. 12) If a dance wax or solvent-based wax has been used, it will not be removed by water scrub method. Scrub repeatedly with waterless cleaner and pick up immediately. 13) All surfaces in the gym (bleachers, etc.) should be wiped clean to insure a dust-free atmosphere. 14) Prior to the use of any cleaning procedure, remove all gum and other built-up soil. * When utilizing moisture cured urethanes. Water base urethanes may trafficed with-in 12 hours of drying.
5 Athletic Mats A. Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) a. Neutral disinfectant cleaner b. Mop bucket and ringer c. Hospital loop 5" saddle mop d. Plastic or aluminum sanitizable mop handle e. Wall mount proportioning equipment/or manual proportioning equipment f. Personal protective equipment h. Optional floor dryers B. Procedures 1) Before rolling mats on to gymnasium floor, confirm that gymnasium floor has been disinfected with Germicidal Cleaner and thoroughly dried 2) Unroll mats onto previously disinfected floor 3) Prepare bucket of disinfectant solution with Neutral Disinfectant Germicidal Cleaner 4) The bucket should be filled approximately half full with cool or luke warm water. A pre measured amount of Neutral Disinfectant Cleaner should be added to the water and mixed with the wet mop head. A wall mounted proportioner may also be utilized. 5) Dip the mop into the cleaning solution, wring out and begin damp mopping the exercise mat in a figure 8 motion. 6) Continue mopping the surface until the mat is totally clean. NOTE: Remember that the mat surface is now wet and subsequently slippery, place Wet Floor signs on perimeter of mat and do not allow any activity on the mat until it is thoroughly dry. 7) Floor dryers may be used to accelerate drying process. 8) Repeat 5-7 after sporting event, practice, etc. 9) Dispose of old water, rinse all equipment, wring out mop and allow to air dry 10) Maintain separate equipment for this area for proper quality controls and assurances 11) Mop heads should be laundered or thrown away after every third use. * The bottom of all mats should be properly disinfected and dried thoroughly before rolling the mat for storage if the gymnasium floor was not pre-cleaned prior to mat roll out. This will help insure that dirt from the bottom of the mat is not rolled onto the top surface.
