PREAMBLE The Southern Adelaide Local Health Network (LHN) provides care for around 341,000 people living in the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide as well as providing a number of state-wide services, and services to those in regional areas. More than 7,000 skilled staff provide high quality patient care, education, research and health promoting services. Southern Adelaide LHN provides a range of acute and sub acute health services for people of all ages, and has three hospitals, Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital and the Repatriation General Hospital. Primary Health and Transition services delivers a range of services across the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide, with a focus on providing chronic disease management programs in the community, and transition and hospital substitution and avoidance programs targeted at chronic disease and frail aged. Southern Mental Health provides a range of integrated services across community and hospital settings, targeted at all age groups, in collaboration with non-government organisations and Southern Adelaide Fleurieu Kangaroo Island Medicare Local (SAFKIML). 2. SUMMARY OF THE BROAD PURPOSE OF THE POSITION and its responsibilities/duties The Audiologist implements procedures, which result in the diagnosis and management of hearing and related disorders for children and adults. The Audiologist is responsible for the interpretation of results and communication with referral sources to identify appropriate surgical, medical and rehabilitative interventions. Services include paediatric, adult and ototoxic monitoring as well as facilitating ENT clinics. Some support for the Flinders University Masters of Audiology Program may be required. The AHP2 Audiologist is accountable to the Director of Clinical Services (Speech Pathology and Audiology) for the provision of audiological services,

4 which result in the assessment and management of patients being referred from within Flinders Medical Centre and outside the hospital. This is a part time maternity leave contract working with a part time AHP3 audiologist who provides ongoing professional supervision. Counselling for difficulties created by hearing related disorders and recommendations of strategies are provided. The Audiologist is responsible for arranging referral to outside agencies for ongoing rehabilitation and management. The Audiologist participates in research, teaching and service improvement activities at FMC/FU and within the region. To contribute to the cost effectiveness of services at FMC the audiologist works with multi-disciplinary Allied Health and ward based teams wherever possible. 3. 5 Contribute to the planning, development and evaluation of audiological services. Promote improvement and enhancement of audiology services and operational processes through multi-disciplinary continuous quality improvement activities. Hearing and related disorders are diagnosed by performing baseline and diagnostic audiological procedures for inpatients and outpatients at FMC. Standard testing methods are modified for complex patients. Limited oto-neurological diagnostic testing including ABR may be provided. (ENG & Caloric testing not performed at FMC) FMC referred patients are managed by identifying, recommending and implementing strategies to deal with difficulties created by hearing and related disorders, including counselling. Optimise management of the hearing impaired patient by liaising with members of health care teams within the hospital and community. Maintain comprehensive professional reports in main unit record FMC and interpret audiology results and disseminate. Monitor discharged patients by liaising with external agencies and professionals. Assess aural performance and visual communication skills for patients referred to the Cochlear Implant Program, including promontory stimulation. Contribution is made to the pre and post surgical counselling of cochlear implant patients Contribute to effective patient self-management, by providing information, education, and planning of the management with consumer participation. Provide consultancy regarding audiological services in collaboration with the senior audiologist. To manage the service to meet performance targets and the strategic directions of FMC and the division, the incumbent will; Contribute to the overall management of the department in accordance with hospital policy by observing administrative and clinical protocols, maintaining accurate statistics to the standard required by the hospital and division, attending staff planning sessions, and maintenance of clinical assessment and therapy materials. Contribute to the maintenance of quality service standards of the equipment in conjunction with BME and other audiologists, instructing in aspects of calibration where necessary. Represent audiology at Department and Allied Health Division meetings, and others as required. Ensure timely exchange of information with the senior audiologist. Work with the Allied Health Division, in ensuring the cost-effective management of the audiology service to meet all performance targets. Monitor and evaluate the service and make changes where indicated.
