All insulation materials, including jackets, facings, adhesives, coatings, and accessories are to be fire hazard rated and listed by Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., using Steiner Tunnel Test Method for Fire Hazard Classification of Building Materials, Standard UL 723 ASTM E-84, NFPA-255, ASA A Flamespread: maximum Fuel contributed and smoke developed: maximum Flameproofing treatments subject to deterioration from moisture of humidity, are not acceptable. 4. Erosion resistance per U.L B. Type as noted, for services listed. C. Adhesives and sealants: 1. UL listed or classified. 2. Type 1 per Adhesive and Sealant Council Standard ASC-A D. Mechanical Fasteners. 1. Either of following types acceptable. 2. Comply with SMACNA Mechanical Fasteners Standard, unless otherwise noted. 3. Adhesive type: a. Perforated galvanized steel base. b. 12 gauge spindle. c. AGM Industries TACTOO Insul-Hangers or equal. d. Adhesive similar to Goodyear Plio-Nail. 4. Pins secured mechanically to metal duct: Gripnail or equal. 5. Insulation washers: a. Galvanized steel. b. 1-1/2 in. diameter. c. AGM Industries SLW-l or equal. 6. 5 PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 DUCT INSULATION SCHEDULE A. Notes for Insulation Schedule. Note 1. Schedule Symbols: 1.5-DW-V. 1.5 = Installed thickness in inches. DW = Duct wrap: See PART 2 PRODUCTS V = Vapor barrier. Note 2. Within 25 ft., or 10 x dia. of fan inlet and outlet, whichever is greater. a. Supply fans or units. b. Return fan or units. c. All exhaust fans unless specifically excluded. Note 3. Note 4. Necks longer than 24 in. Where duct lining is specified, no other insulation needed if required maximum conductance results. a. If maximum conductance cannot be obtained by lining alone; apply additional wrap or lining to give total conductance equal to maximum allowable. Note 5. Provide facing for all duct wrap on ducts exposed in air plenums, if not otherwise called for. B. Ensure that insulation is continuous through interior non-fire rated walls. 2. For insulated ducts passing through interior fire-rated walls: a. Pack around ducts with fire proof, self-supporting insulation material, properly sealed. b. Seal insulation on both sides of rated wall to fire proof packing. 3. Finish insulation neatly at hangers, supports and other protrusions. 4. Locate insulation joints or cover seams in least visible locations. 5. Where ducts run in groups too close to be individually insulated and finished: a. Completely fill all spaces between ducts with rigid or flexible insulating material. b. Insulate and finish exterior surfaces of group as specified for particular service. 6. Where ducts cannot be insulated after erection, insulate prior to installation. 7. Where specified thickness of insulation exceeds available thickness in single layer, provide insulation in 2 or more layers with joints staggered. 8. Preparation: a. Do not install covering before ductwork and equipment has been tested and approved. b. Ensure surface is clean and dry prior to installation. c. Ensure insulation is dry before and during application. 9. Mechanical fasteners: a. Adhered anchors. b. Clip off pin penetrations flush with insulation surface or facing. c. Seal pins and washers where pins penetrate vapor barriers: 1) With 4 in. square pieces of vapor barrier material to match facing. 2) Adhere with vaporseal adhesive. d. Spacing on rectangular ducts: 1) Typical of horizontal and vertical, unless otherwise specified. 2) Duct board: a) 3 in. in from edges November 13, 1998
7 b) Intermediate fasteners: ½ in. on counter maximum spacing all directions. c) Not less than one pin per surface. 3) Duct wrap: de Dimension Maximum Spacing 24 in. and under None required. 25 to 32 in. Horizontal - none. Vertical: 1 row centered, 12 in. on center. 33 to 48 in. 2 rows, 12 in. on center. 49 to 60 in. 3 rows, 12 in. on center. 61 in. and over 16 in. on center, all directions. 4) Duct wrap spacing applicable to flat surfaces of flat oval ducts. 10. Provide 24 gauge sheet metal Z section frames over edges of duct and plenum lining: a. At access openings and doors. b. Along edges exposed to air flow. B. Rectangular Duct Wrap: 1. With Vapor Barrier: C. Round Duct Wrap: a. Vapor barrier and sealing continuous without breaks, including around supports and bracing. b. 2 in. lap strip at one end. c. Peel insulation for 2 in. lap strip along longitudinal joints. d. Seal lap strips with vaporseal adhesive, Foster's or equal. e. Adhesive sealing not required in heating, return or exhaust air services. 1. General: a. Adhere flexible insulation to ductwork with adhesive applied in 6 in. wide strips on 16 in. centers. b. Provide 16 gauge annealed tie wire tied, spiral wound or half hitched at 16 in. centers. c. Butt insulation and seal joints and breaks with 2 in. lap of foil adhered over joint. 2. Apply duct wrap with vapor barrier as specified above for rectangular ducts. D. Duct Board: 1. Comply with published recommendations of manufacturer and with following: November 13, 1998
8 a. Secure with 4 in. strips of adhesive, 8 in. on center. b. Secure on top, sides and bottom of duct with mechanical fasteners, spacing as scheduled. E. Rectangular Duct Lining: 1. Comply with SMACNA Duct Liner Application Standard, published recommendations of manufacturer, and following: 2. Apply adhesive over 100% of surfaces to be lined. 3. Surface adjacent to air flow, including at joints, to be uniformly flat. 4. Seal butt joints and exposed edges of liner to prevent erosion. 5. Mechanical fasteners: Spacing per SMACNA Duct Liner Application Standard. 6. Internal acoustical lining may be substituted at contractor's option where (external) thermal insulation wrapping is specified. 7. Install internal acoustical lining as scheduled in 3.01 for all supply air and return air ductwork. F. Round duct lining: 1. Insert pre-fabricated circular fiberglass lining. a. Include tees and fittings. b. Segmental lining in elbows. 2. In ducts larger than maximum size of pre-fabricated lining install flexible lining as specified hereinbefore. a.
