1 7.8A STUDENT ACTIVITY From Different s Materials: geometric three-dimensional figure without a curved surface, NOTE: a sticky dot has been placed on the figure by the teacher to identify the front of the figure; blank transparency and transparency pen Procedure: Work with a partner for this activity. Your teacher will give you and your partner a three-dimensional figure, a blank transparency, and a transparency pen. The dot on the three-dimensional figure identifies the front of the figure. Place the three-dimensional figure on a desk, look straight down on the figure and work with your partner to make a sketch of the top of the three-dimensional figure on the transparency. Label the top view. Get eye level with the three-dimensional figure, look at the front of the three-dimensional figure and make a sketch of the front view of the figure on the transparency. Label the front view. Get eye level with each side of your three-dimensional figure and make a sketch of each side view of the figure. Label the left side view and the right side view. 2 Justify how your sketches are congruent to your three-dimensional figure: view: view: Left side view Right side view When you have completed the sketches of the top, front, and side views, and answered the questions above, return the figure and the sketches to your teacher. The teacher will number the transparency and ask you to place the three-dimensional figure around the room in a specific location. When everyone has finished their sketches and all the figures have been placed around the room, your teacher will give you and your partner one of the transparencies and ask you to find the three-dimensional figure that matches the sketches. When you have found a match, take the figure and the transparency and return to your seats. Your teacher will ask pairs of students to place their transparency on the overhead projector and one of you to hold the figure up where the class can see it. You will lead a class discussion about the match that includes evidence like you listed above. The discussion should include agreement or disagreement of the match based on the front view and left and right side views of the figure and the sketches. After the discussion, the teacher will ask you to place the three-dimensional figure and the matching transparency on the table with the sign that says Confirmed Match or on the table with the sign that says Disagree with Match. After all three-dimensional figures are discussed, if there are any figures and sketches with the Disagree with Match sign, the class will work together to discuss what needs to be changed to correctly match the transparency with the figure. All figures and transparencies will then be moved to the Confirmed Match area. As a class you will view the Confirmed Math area one more time by placing each transparency on the overhead and checking the three-dimensional figures to make sure everyone agrees each figure and transparency is a match. 3 7.8A STUDENT ACTIVITY #2 What s Your Perspective? Materials: 16 multi-link cubes per group of students, 1 large sheet of 1-inch grid chart paper per group, colored markers, large sticky dots Procedure: Work with a group of 4. Using 8 interlocking cubes, you and group will work to build as many structures as you can. You must use all 8 cubes for each structure you build. HINT: Your group has 16 cubes, therefore you can work in pairs to build 2 different structures at the same time. After your group builds each structure, verify the number of cubes, then sketch the structure on the chart paper provided. For each structure, also sketch the front, top, and side views (left and right.) Label the structure and the front, top, right side, and left side views. Following is an example of the sketches for one structure your group might build. Structure Left Side Right Side Your group will have 20 minutes to build and sketch as many different structures as possible. When your group has completed your sketches, or the 20-minute time limit has been called, post your chart paper on the wall around the room. Your teacher will provide tape and will number the chart papers as they are posted. One person from each group will stand beside their poster to be the reporter. The reporter will use the 10 sticky dots for this part of the activity. The reporter for Group will show and describe one of the structures on their poster. Each of the other reporters will place a sticky dot on their group poster if they have the same structure. The process will continue around the room until all structures on all posters have a sticky dot on them. Each group scores 5 points for each sticky dot IF all 5 sketches are correct on the poster for each structure. If not, then 1 point is given for each sketch that is correct for the structure. Record the total points for your group: points. Choose one of the sets of sketches on your group s chart and rebuild the structure. Call this Structure. Answer the following questions about the structure: Is there more than one structure that could be built using the sketches for Structure? Explain your answer on the back of this page.
