Please refer to the college/university website of your interest for more details. 2
1. APPLICATION TIMELINE The following timeline will help you prepare your application process by following the dates by which each step needs to be accomplished before beginning your studies in the US. STEP I-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS The applicant should start with this step at least 12 months prior to admission REQUIRED TESTS Register and start preparing for the following two tests, required for admission at any nationally accredited US university: ü English-Language test (TOEFL): ( ) ü GRE test (Graduate Record Examinations General Test) ( You may need at least two months to prepare for each test. If you pass the tests and the score obtained is not satisfactory, register and take the tests again. All English language test scores are valid for two years from the date the test was taken. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS Students should review the documents required by their program(s) of interest prior to beginning the application process. The following are the most common required documents: Request three recommendation letters from your teachers or professors. For science and engineering disciplines, it is advised to obtain recommendation letters from your professors teaching scientific courses (physics, math, chemistry, biology). Write a Personal Statement (1 to 2 pages) and a Statement of Purpose (1 to 2 pages). See references (1) and (2). Templates of these statements and other information are available online. Prepare a detailed CV or resume and keep it updated Have all your diplomas and transcripts (relevés de notes) translated into English by a certified translator. Work hard at school to get good grades. The minimum grade required for admission to most US universities is a cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 3.2/4 (une moyenne générale 12/20). STEP II-IDENTIFYING AREA OF INTEREST (ADMISSION TYPE?) Applicants are recommended to start at least 12 months before admission with their search online for the universities and colleges offering programs in the field of their interest. Check out the links to the College Navigator or the TOP US universities provided in Section 4 Useful Links of this guide to find the best university for you. 3
For undergraduate applicants planning to pursue a Bachelors degree (License): Visit the university website: search for Admissions and then Undergraduate students, then International Students to find more information on the application deadline, tuition (Frais de scolarité), and a link for online application. For graduate applicants planning to pursue a graduate program (Master or PhD degree): You can visit directly the website of the Department you are interested in. Look for Graduate students or Admission, to find more information on the application deadline, tuition, and a link for online application instructions. If you have a question on the application process, you can the Director of Graduate Studies (see the Department website for an address). STEP III-ONLINE APPLICATION The applicant is recommended to start with this step 10 months before admission. Apply online to different schools (for undergraduate applicants) or different graduate programs (for graduate applicants). Make sure your three recommendations have been mailed or uploaded online in time to meet the deadlines. You will also need your GRE and TOEFL scores, a personal statement and/or statement of purpose, CV/resume, transcripts and diplomas (all documents have to be in English). Create an application via the University online system. The application fee ranges from $70 to $100. You can use a credit card to make online payment. As of today (March 2016), the online payment is not available in Algeria. You can send a check by mail or ask a relative living abroad to make the payment for you. If none of these options are possible; you can request a fee waiver from the University or graduate school by explaining the reason of your request. To complete and submit the online application you will need to complete the financial support form. If you are applying for undergraduate school, you will need to justify your financial support by a scholarship or personal support. If you are applying for a graduate school (Masters or Ph.D.), you will need to find a professor (in the Department or graduate program you are applying for) who can be your advisor and sponsor. Professors usually hire students as graduate research assistants and cover the cost of all their expenses at the University (tuition, health insurance). Once you receive the preadmission decision to a graduate program, contact the professors in that program to see if they have available positions as graduate research assistant. In most cases, finding an advisor/sponsor is required for final admission to the graduate program. Your advisor will send you an offer letter that you can use as a financial support form to complete your final registration online. For graduate applicants: Some graduate programs may have rolling admission, which means they accept applications on an ongoing basis. If this is the case with your 4
program of interest, you should still apply as early as possible, and no later than one month before the term begins. Fall term begins in early September, Spring term in mid-january, and Summer term in mid-june STEP IV-VISA APPLICATION The applicant is recommended to start with this step no later than 3 months before admission Once you receive letter of acceptance from one school (for undergraduate applicants), or the offer letter (for graduate applicants), ask the school you have chosen to attend to send you the I-20 form to start your VISA application. Get a visa application form from the US embassy or consulate website ( ). Students need Visa type F1. For more information on F1 Visa, visit the link indicated in reference (3). Algerian students are advised that visa processing may take one 1 to 3 months. STEP V-TRAVEL AND HOUSING ARRANGEMENTS PRE-ARRIVAL INFORMATION Review all your important documents and make extra copies of your immigration documents Make travel arrangements. Schedule your trip so you arrive at least 15 days prior to your school's day of orientation. In the US, you can start your studies either in the Fall Semester (September) or in the Spring Semester (January). Your arrival date to the US should be early January or early September. Inform your school of your travel arrangements Arrange for pick up from airport to your local US housing POST-ARRIVAL INFORMATION Keep your I-94 card as an ID type of document Make housing arrangements. Research bank option Research mobile phone options Research public transportation options. Usually universities provide a Pass for free or discounted transportation. Seek more information from the student services office. After spending one year on F1 visa status, graduate students are eligible to working part-time (20 hours per week) on campus or off campus, as long as they remain in their field of studies (see 5
2. COST AND FINANCIAL AID Tuition is the largest part of your education cost. It varies widely between different universities from $12,000 to $45,000 per year. If you are applying for undergraduate school, you will need to find a scholarship or use your personal funding. If you are applying for a graduate program, you can look for a professor who can advise you and hire you as a Graduate Research Assistant in his/her laboratory, which will cover all your expenses. This is the most common type for sponsorship for graduate students. Don t hesitate to contact professors in the program or department you are interested in and ask for available Graduate Research Assistant positions Housing is the second largest component of your education cost. The cost for a room or an apartment can vary from $4,000 to $8,000 per year. Other fees include books and supplies ($500 and $1,500), student activity fees, personal expenses, medical insurance ($500 and $1,000) and travel cost from Algiers to the US (round-trip flight: $800 to $1,100 low season). All costs increase by 5% every year due to inflation. Below are some links for websites that provide information on scholarships and financial aid for Algerian students: ü US-Algeria Exchange Programs: ü Scholarships open to Algerian students (Search engine by country): d[fieldsofstudy]=&award[locations]=&award[details]=3&yt0=search ü Fulbright Algeria: ü Fulbright Program: ü AMIDEAST - provides financial aids for international students from the Middle East and North Africa: ü International student scholarship search tools: ü International Education Financial Aid (IEFA): ü Scholarship Directory: ü Find Scholarships: ü International scholarship search: ü If you were born in the USA and hold the American citizenship, you may qualify for the Financial Aid program. 6
3. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ALGERIAN AND US UNIVERSITY SYSTEMS The Algerian university system is based on the French model, and both present important differences as compared to the US university system. Five differences are summarized here: Credit Unit System: The Algerian higher education system is based on the LMD degree structure for Licence (3 years, 180 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS credits), Master s (2 years, 120 ECTS), and Doctorate (3 years). The LMD system is now used throughout Europe and allows students to transfer credit and establish degree equivalency between one university or national higher education system and another. In the US, University courses are assigned a value in what are called "credits" or "units." The number of units assigned to a course corresponds to the number of hours that a student will attend class for that course. For example, a course that consists of three class sessions per week, and where each class session last for 50 minutes, will be assigned a value of three units. Typically, colleges require that students complete a minimum number of units in order to graduate, rather than a minimum number of courses. This gives students more flexibility in what courses they decide to take to complete their graduation requirements. Flexibility: Since the USA school system utilizes credit units and often accommodates working students, most schools offer academic programs that are flexible in nature. This means that, very often, one can choose when to attend classes, how many classes to enroll in each semester or quarter, what electives or optional classes to take, etc. The American university is very conforming to each student's needs. The Algerian model sets generally the same schedule and program for everyone. College admission tests: US colleges and universities require that all their applicants take one or more American College standardized tests. These tests include the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), ACT test, GRE (Graduate Record Examination), and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). Students from countries where English is not the official language need to check which tests are required in the program of their interest. Additionally, applicants who are not Americans are required to also take the TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language). Academic calendar system: Most colleges and universities follow either a quarter-based calendar system or a semester-based calendar system. In a quarter system, the academic year is divided into three sessions called quarters or terms. Each quarter lasts about 12 weeks. There is usually an additional quarter in the summer, where registration is optional. Foreign students are not required to attend courses in the summer to maintain their status. In a semester system, the academic year is divided into two sessions called semesters. Each semester lasts 16 weeks (Fall and Spring semesters). Again, there may be an optional session during the summer. You can register and start studying at the university in any semester or quarter. Students who have registered for at least 12 units in a session (either a quarter or semester) are said to be "full-time" students. Students who have registered for fewer than 12 units in a session are called "part-time" students. Foreign students must maintain a "full-time course load" (in other words, they must 7
always register for at least 12 units) in order to maintain their visa status. Grades: In the Algerian grading system, you ll get a number from 0 through 20; you need a 10 to pass. In the US the grading is based on the A, B, C, D or F. You need a C- to pass each class. The GPA (moyenne générale) is given on a scale of 4. The correspondence between the Algerian and US grading scale is indicated in Table 1. Table 1. US. Vs. Algerian Grading Scale [Source: Reference (4) and(5)] (This table is provided as an indication only. Some schools do not use the plus and minus differentiator). Algerian grading scale (Note sur 20) Grade Description U.S. Grade Equivalent Très Bien (Very Good) A Bien (Good) A Assez Bien (Quite B+ 3.3 Good) Passable B 3.0 (Satisfactory) Moyen (Sufficient) C Insuffisant C- 1 (Insufficient) Echec (Fail) D F 0.0 GPA value (Moyenne générale) 4.
