Enabling Electricity Right to light SE4ALL Forum, New York - June 2014 Marina Migliorato Head of CSR
Energy divide: a global challenge 1,3 billion people lack access to electricity 2,7 billion people rely on traditional biomasses for cooking and heating 1 billion people has access to instable power grids (World Energy Outlook, IEA) Earth's City Lights - Data courtesy of NASA 2
: UN International Decade of Sustainable Energy for all The goal is to meet three objectives by 2030: Ensuring universal access to modern energy services Doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency Doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix
Enabling Electricity. Right to Light FROM AN INSTITUTIONAL PERSPECTIVE As a member of the Global Compact LEAD, Enel and Endesa support United Nations through Enabling Electricity, the Group CSR programme to promote access to energy. It is focused on two targets: people who live in isolated areas and disadvantaged communities in peripheral, rural and suburban areas. FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE Enabling Electricity is not only a driver for growth and prosperity but also an effective way to access to new potential markets. It is totally aligned to the Enel approach to sustainability, aimed at creating shared value, for the Group itself and for all its stakeholders.
Enabling Electricity: key figures TARGET To reach isolated communities To help disadvantaged people in peripheral, rural and sub-urban areas ADVANTAGES Empowers local community and women Explores new potential markets Tests innovative business models Improves health and safety conditions 20 Countries, more than 30 Projects Over 2.3 million beneficiaries so far meaning increasing Latin America total base of clients by 7%
A sustainable, affordable and accessible energy Enabling Electricity is based upon three intervention areas: 1.Projects to guarantee technological and infrastructural accessibility 2.Projects to abate economic barriers 3.Projects to foster capacity building to those most in need
Access to technology and infrastructure TOB (Triangle-based Omni-purpose Building) - 1 Projects aimed at facilitating access to electricity by means of network infrastructures and new distributed generation technologies, such as small-scale production systems using renewable sources. Throughout the world, there are still plenty of isolated areas where the local populations do not have access to electricity. In this area connection to electricity network is often not affordable. The TOB concept is a system to provide off-grid energy and essential services.
Access to technology and infrastructure TOB (Triangle-based Omni-purpose Building) - 2 The TOB structure represents a liveable, independent solution, easy to assemble, transportable and integrating photovoltaic modules and storage systems. It is possible to insert all types of equipment useful for the supply of necessary services for the community (schools, infirmary wards, refill stations, etc.). It is a project carried out by Enel s Research Centre.
Access to technology and infrastructure Other Projects Partnership with the World Food Programme Haiti - Efficient Cook Stoves Programme Colombia - Luces para aprender Congo - Pointe Noire Chile - Programa Multicanchas - Ollagüe Project Brazil - Luz para todos (Light For All) Peru - Huallín hydroelectric power Plant Electrificación asentamientos humanos Iluminaciòn de losas deportivas Electrificación Reserva Frìa e Curibamba
Breaking down economic barriers Ecoelce, Ecoampla, Ecochilectra - 1 Projects designed to abate economic barriers to electricity access. These projects, carried out in Brazil and in Chile, are based on a simple approach. Customers separate recyclable waste and take it to collection points set up in the city. The waste is valued at market price and the amount is transferred in the form of energy credits, which become discounts on the customer s electricity bill. It is a new business model, which involves environmental, social and economic advantages.
Breaking down economic barriers Ecoelce, Ecoampla, Ecochilectra - 2 Started in 2007, Ecoelce, the initial programme in Brazil has recycled more than 12,037 tons of waste, benefitting some 374,980 families through discounts of around Euro 579,834. The project has generated 36 direct and 53 indirect jobs by helping grow Brazil s recycling industry. Ampla, the distribution company in Río de Janeiro (Brazil), launched the project in So far, it has collected 1,984 tons of recyclable waste equivalent to Euro 150,000 of energy credits for around 66,197 registered customers. The project started in Chile in This time, our local distribution company, Chilectra, launched a pilot project involving 30,000 households. To date, some 2,000 customers have joined the project. This new business model will be exported to other Latin America countries where Enel operates.
Capacity Building Partnership between Enel Green Power and Barefoot College - 1 Local community projects through the investment in capacity building, making the Group s experience available to local populations, for example, by training young people in technical schools. The Barefoot College is a nongovernmental association which, since 1972, has been striving to enable the most disadvantaged rural communities in the world to become economically self-sufficient. Enel Green Power and Barefoot College have launched a rural electrification project in Guatemala, Peru, Chile, Colombia and El Salvador. Enel Green Power is the first private partner of the Indian NGO in this project and in this continent.
Capacity Building Partnership between Enel Green Power and Barefoot College - 2 The model consists in identifying young illiterate grandmothers (between the ages of 35 and 50 years) to be enrolled onto a special training project in order to transform them into Barefoot Solar Engineers. In this way, the rural communities involved in the project are provided with professional specialists in the installation, maintenance and repair of domestic photovoltaic systems.
Action Plan: some details In 2014 Enabling Electricity will address different stakeholders. Access to electricity will be one of the main themes of the next Sustainability Day. The program will also be enhanced in the institutional events planned throughout the year (UN Global Compact, European Parliament, GRI, CSR Europe) with ad hoc meetings. A specific focus on energy poverty will be provided in the relations with ESG Indexes and Funds, stressing the opportunities for access to new potential markets. A deeper involvement of employees is foreseen, for example through volunteer management programs. Due to the financial crisis, Enabling Electricity could be applied even in other Countries, as far as economic obstacles to the access to electricity are concerned.
Energy poverty is a reality. We will continue our journey to bring energy to the millions of people who still don t have it.
