The Ohio Nurses Association (OBN ) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the 39 th Annual Conference: Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions January 15 18, 2014 Orlando, FL More information available at: Frequently Asked Questions What is the difference between an Approver and Provider of CNE? We continue to see issues on applications and within the forms and documents submitted that contain Approval Language. Approval as a provider on Continuing Nursing Education is recognition of a provider unit s capacity to award contact hours for continuing education activities. These activities must be assessed, planned, implemented, and evaluated by the approved provider unit. Under no circumstance may the approved provider act as an approval unit or approve activities. The approved provider unit may offer an unlimited number of educational activities during the three year period of approval. Your organization, upon achieving approval as a provider unit, is authorized to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate continuing education activities according to the criteria and rules and award contact hours for those activities. Provider units never have the authority to approve their own or anyone else s activities. The words approved, application, or applicant should never be used in connection with any activity your provider unit plans and presents.

3 Can contact hours be offered for BLS? Contact hours may not be awarded for the BLS course. There has been some confusion over this topic. Contact hours may be offered for the advanced courses including ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc. Your organization may choose to not award contact hours for any or all of these courses. Common Errors on Applications Organizations seeking approval to become an Approved Provider often have difficulty with the Outcomes criteria. The Approval Board recommends attending the training session being offered by the Ohio Nurses Association mentioned above. Tips for Providers Learner Feedback What does it mean? An ANCC document Learner feedback What does it mean? As part of the educational design planning process, providers are required to develop ways in which learners will be provided feedback during the educational activity. Strategies to provide/incorporate feedback may include but are not limited to question/answer sessions, self-check questions embedded within the activity, completing pre-test/post-test questions, self-reflection with discussion time, or engaging learners in active dialogue. Evidence has demonstrated that employing on-going feedback within educational activities improves participant engagement in the learning process and creates an environment that is more likely to induce behavior change. Strategies to provide/incorporate learner feedback may be documented on the overall activity planning documentation form or may be embedded within an individual speaker s educational design table. The strategies should be congruent with the purpose, objectives, and teaching/learning methods for the activity. For example, documenting Q&A as the learner feedback method for an enduring material print article would not make sense. Embedding self-check questions in a print article would make sense. Providers should also ensure that sufficient time is included within the educational activity for learner feedback, and the time is calculated as part of the overall contact hours awarded for the activity. What is interprofessional continuing education? An ANCC document As ANCC accredited organizations view the future landscape of continuing education, there is much discussion about interprofessional continuing education (IPE). Defined by the World Health Organization in 2010, IPE is when students from two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes. The goal of IPE is to improve interprofessional collaborative practice in the health care setting, and positively impact teamwork, care delivery and patient outcomes.

4 When planning interprofessional educational activities, the planning process must integrate members of the professions for which continuing education credit will be awarded. An interprofessional planning process is not a parallel planning process, i.e. each profession evaluating needs for and planning educational activities that happen to take place at the same time. Additionally, an interprofessional activity is not defined by members of professions who happen to attend or participate in an educational activity. To be classified as an interprofessional educational activity, the planning process must 1.) be an integrated process that includes health care professionals from two or more professions; 2.) be an integrated process that includes health care professionals who are reflective of the target audience members the activity is designed to address; 3.) demonstrate an intent to achieve outcome(s) that reflect a change in skills, strategy or performance of the health care team and/or patient outcomes; and 4.) reflect of one or more of the interprofessional competencies to include: values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and/or teams/teamwork. When planning interprofessional continuing education activities, planners must assess and document the professional practice gaps of the members (professions) of the healthcare team, and design educational activities to address those gaps. It is important to note that planners should not assess the needs of one profession then extrapolate those needs to another profession without clear evidence that the needs are similar. A growing body of evidence has demonstrated the positive impact that interprofessional continuing education can have on both team performance and outcomes. When planning your next CE activity, consider including members of other professions that might be critical to achieving your CE outcome goals.
