2 Supply List 1. Background fabric (1) 9 x12 piece of black batik 2. Flower fabric small piece of yellow batik or tone-on-tone 3. Stabilizer (2) 9 x12 pieces stabilizer backing such as Aqua Mesh by OESD 4. Piece of dressmaker tracing paper (Clover) 5. 4 x4 piece of fusible web 4. 6 wooden or plastic embroidery hoop 5. Thread A. Stems & leaves 30 weight crème B. Flower petals 40 weight 4 shades from bright yellow to medium orange NOTE: the flower petal thread you use will depend on the flower fabric you select. The colors below are just suggestions for fabric similar to the one I used. C. Flower petal shading 100 weight silk (or 60 weight polyester) - dark rust Optional med. light rust 4. (1) bobbin filled with 60 weight gray bobbin thread 5. Basic sewing supplies 80 and 90 machine needles, pins, tweezers, etc. 6. Sewing machine with open toe free motion foot 7. Bernina owners use your BSR foot if you have one to sketch the stems & leaves 8. Open toe appliqué foot if you don t have a BSR & aren t comfortable with free motion 9. Mechanical pencil Tracing and fusing 1. Tape the black batik to a flat surface; tape the tracing paper in place shiny side down; tape the master pattern over the tracing paper. Using a firm hand, trace the stems going over the lines of the master pattern. Remove the tracing paper and master pattern. 2. Flip the master pattern to the back side and tape it to a light box or sunny window. Tape the fusible web over the flower petals; trace the outline only onto the paper side of the fusible web; cut out. 3. Fuse the fusible web to the wrong side of the yellow batik. Cut out. 4. Tape the master pattern to a light box or sunny window and tape the cut out yellow fabric on top. Using a mechanical pencil, lightly trace the lines on each petal onto the yellow fabric. Hooping the design 1. On a flat surface lay the 2 pieces of stabilizer backing and the black fabric. 2. Unscrew the screw on the hoop and slide the outer ring of the hoop under the all layers with the screw assembly at 6 o clock. This will assist in locating the screw. 3. Push the inner ring on top of the black fabric centering the stems and leaves until it is secure inside the outer ring. Push down on the inner ring keeping your fingertips on the inner ring. Gently pull the fabric to remove any ripples inside the hoop. Grip the fabric close to the edge of the hoop to keep from stretching the fabric. 4. Work your way around the hoop gently pulling the fabric until the wrinkles are gone keeping pressure with your fingertips on the inside hoop. 5. Keeping your finger tips on the inner hoop slide the hoop to the edge of the table and tighten the screw about 90 percent. 6. Evaluate and if necessary adjust the fabric until no more ripples are apparent. Tighten the screw. 7. Pick up the hoop and with your thumbs press down on the inner hoop until about 1/8 of the inner hoop shows on the back side of the hoop. This adds extra tension on the fabric. The bottom of the stabilizer sits slightly below the outer hoop. Please view Thread Painting Stitches with Attitude for explanation of the differences between the straight and zigzag stitch. 2

Use a straight stitch throughout the project. Practice sketching the stems and leaves first on a piece of hooped muslin and stabilizer. 2. Stems & leaves See Thread #1 and Figure 1. Insert a 90 needle. There are several ways to sketch the stems and leaves Option 1) free motion if you are comfortable with free motion, Option 2) Bernina owners use your BSR to assure a good stitch quality and Option 3) use an open toe appliqué foot. For Option 3 to execute the tack the stitch, raise the foot and rotate the hoop to sketch the stems and leaves. Raise the foot to execute tight turns. 3. See Page 2 for instructions on hooping the stems and leaves. Program a beginning and ending tack stitch if possible. Insert an open toe free motion foot. 4. Sketch the stem and leaves. 5. Remove the paper backing and fuse the petal into position using the master pattern as reference. 6. See Page 2 for instructions on hooping the flower petal. 7. Outline between petals See Thread #2 and Figure 2. Insert an 80 needle. Following the lines between each petal move the hoop slowly to sketch the outlines. Stitch out one line and then back to the center each time. Rotate the hoop to get from petal outline to petal outline. 8. Shading See Thread #3 and Figure 2. Rotate the hoop so the flower is facing you and move the hoop north to south going out one line and returning on the same line. The idea here is to give a base of shading first. More shading will be added at the end. 9. NOTE: in the video the shading is shown at the end, here at the beginning. It is okay to do either way Nancy Prince

Thread sketch the 1st petal color following the drawn pencil lines. 2. NOTE: where necessary, raise the needle and move to the next drawn line to sketch all petal lines. 3. 2nd petal color See Thread #5 and Figure 4. Evaluate the flower and add more of the darker rust at the center if necessary. 2. Optional See Thread #6 and Figure 5. Thread sketch the lighter rust between the darker shading stitches already in place. 3. Evaluate the petals and touch up where necessary. Figure Nancy Prince

6 Removing the Stabilizer from the Fabric 1. Remove the project form the hoop. 2. Cut away the bottom stabilizer to within 1/2 of the design. Be cautions don t cut into the fabric. 3. Run water over the design. As the water breaks the stabilizer down, it turns the stabilizer into goo. 4. Continue rinsing the design under running water until all the goo is gone from the front and back. 5. Take some soap (bar or hand) and rub it into the design on the front. The soap will help to break down any stabilizer trapped inside the stitches. 6. Place the project into a sink of cold water and fabric softener (1 part fabric softener to 3 parts water) and let soak for about an hour. 7. Rub your fingers over the back of the project. If your fingers are tacky, the project needs to soak longer. Change the water and continue soaking until there is no more tackiness and the stabilizer is out. 8. Leaving any residue in the design will leave it stiff so try and get all the stabilizer out. 9. Blot and allow to air dry. Press from the back to remove any wrinkles. 10.
