2 Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the Central Kentucky Paramedic Program sponsored by Emergency Medical Training Professionals, LLC (EMTP), Blue Grass Army Depot Fire Department, and Asbury University. Our staff has been actively involved in pre-hospital emergency care for many years. We believe that the EMS Profession can be a rewarding career. However, this career is not for everyone. You must understand that it will take time, effort, desire, and most of all, determination to complete this program and start your EMS career. This profession is serious and the training you will receive should not be taken lightly. As the EMS Program Director and Medical Director it is our responsibility to ensure the instruction you receive while enrolled in this program meets the requirements set forth by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as well as the EMT-Paramedic National EMS Education Standards. To facilitate your advanced learning, we have approved the use of the Brady Paramedic Care, Principles and Practice 4 th edition as your primary textbooks for use during your enrollment in this program. Additionally, we have added supplemental textbooks to ensure mastery of all necessary material. We have approved the content of this application, as well as the Student Manual. Please note that you are responsible for your actions. We are looking forward to working beside you as you endeavor to study in the EMS field. We are available to you for instruction, comments, and feedback during your enrollment in the Central Kentucky Paramedic Program. 4 Frequently Asked Questions Q: Is this program accredited? A: The Central Kentucky Paramedic Program holds a Letter of Review, which is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, but is a status granted by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation Standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation. Q: What is a consortium? A: The Central Kentucky Paramedic Program is sponsored by a consortium between Emergency Medical Training Professionals, Inc. and Asbury University. This means that both institutions have come together, pooling resources, to provide program. EMTP is approved by the Kentucky Board of EMS and the Kentucky Commission on Proprietary Education to provide paramedic courses. AU is accredited by Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Q: How long is the course? A: 1259 Contact Hours. Our program consists of classroom instruction and clinical rotations that will last approximately 9 months in the weekday course or 14 months in the weekend course. Next, students will complete their field internship in no more than 4 months from the last day of classroom instruction. Q: Can I receive credit for prior learning? A: No, we do not accept transfer credits or any other credit for prior learning in this program. This includes, but is not limited to, holding a registered nurse license. All students are required to complete the entire program to graduate. Q: What is required for graduation? A: Students must be physically present for 417 hours of the 435 hours scheduled for classroom instruction. Students who miss more than the 18 hours allotted will be required to make up the missed hours. Students must maintain a 75% average in the overall course and pass all must pass to continue examinations. Additionally, students must complete all of the 324 hospital clinical rotations and 500 field internship hours to be eligible for graduation. Page 4 of 6

5 Q: What is the course schedule? A: The weekday class is scheduled on a shift-friendly basis. Due to the fact the most EMS and Fire Department jobs are scheduled on a 24 hour on duty and 48 hours offduty, class is scheduled accordingly. All class days are scheduled from 9am-5pm. The weekend class will meet every Saturday and the first Sunday of the month. All class days are scheduled from 8:30am-5:30pm. Q: What are the requirements for clinical rotations? A: Students will complete at least 324 hours of clinical rotations mainly in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Operating Room, and Labor & Delivery. Students will be given additional department assignments as necessary. We conduct clinical rotations at approximately eleven different facilities. Q: What are the requirements for field internship? A: Students will complete at least 500 hours on an ambulance and function in the capacity of a Paramedic under the direct supervision of a preceptor. Our program routinely utilizes approximately six different ambulance services throughout Kentucky. Q: Can I have a criminal record and still become a Paramedic in Kentucky? A: It is possible to have a criminal history and be certified as a Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A: Your tuition will be $9,500 which includes 2 uniform shirts, ID Badge, FISDAP account, N-95 fit testing, Kentucky background check, ACLS/PALS/PHTLS/AMLS certification, liability insurance, and all required textbooks. Q: Is financial aid available? A: Students who simultaneously enroll in Asbury University s degree completion program may be eligible to receive a financial aid refund which will pay for a portion of the paramedic course. Students not interested in Asbury University s program can contact EMTP to learn about other financing options. Page 5 of 6

6 Paramedic Course Description Purpose: This course is the highest level of certification in the training of pre-hospital care professionals. This course is designed to train persons for the occupation of Paramedic. Objectives: Upon completion of this program, the student will: 1. Recognize the nature and seriousness of a patient s illness/injury in order to accurately administer the proper emergency medical care on a EMT-Paramedic level of training. 2. Administer appropriate emergency care based on their training to stabilize the patient s condition. 3. Lift, move, position, and otherwise handle the movement of the patient in such a way as to minimize further injury or illness. 4. Fulfill all written and practical objectives as required by the USDOT National Standards Curriculum. 5. Be eligible to take the National Registry of EMT s Certification Examinations. Instructional Philosophy: Learning is self-motivated active process, which is goal-directed, and the responsibility of the individual. This program is divided into learning units and each student must demonstrate proficiency in all units through punctuality, regular attendance, test scores, and cooperation with instructors and fellow students.
