N E T G E A R C o n t a c t I n f o If you have any questions or technical issues, please contact your assigned NETGEAR contacts for this review listed below. Peter Chen Technical Marketing Engineer (408) (408) Peter.Chen@netgear.com P r o d u c t C a t e g o r y Switches Wireless Storage Security O v e r v i e w Thank you for taking the time to evaluate the NETGEAR ReadyDATA line of storage systems. NETGEAR is the worldwide leader in NAS/Unified Storage system unit shipments¹ with a wide range of offerings ranging from 2 bay desktop units to rack mount storage systems. NETGEAR ReadyDATA 5200 is the first product release in the ReadyDATA family. The product aims to provide simple to deploy, unified storage that is aimed at SMB and Mid-size enterprise. The system has been designed to cater for Virtualization, Backup-to-disk and Disaster recovery. All advanced capabilities come at no additional cost and Dual 1GbE and Dual 10GbE is standard within the product ReadyDATA is enterprise-class storage that is less expensive and significantly easier to use than traditional enterprise offerings. ReadyDATA s notable capabilities include: Instant Provisioning for Volumes Instant Expansion, that allows users to expand the array without user or application impact Unlimited Instant Snapshots that can be enabled to occur hourly, daily or weekly iscsi Thin Provisioning Inline Data De-duplication and compression, which can be enabled and disabled at any time SSD performance boosting for SATA volumes to allow performance and capacity at an economical price (Hybrid configuration) Virtual Networking for flexible and simple connectivity over 10GbE Continuous Replication for both SAN and NAS data, managed from a simple cloud portal (readydata.netgear.com) ¹Gartner Market Share: Network-Attached Storage/Unified Storage Worldwide
H a r d w a r e C a p a b i l i t i e s ReadyDATA 5200 offers 12 x 3.5 drive support within a 2RU enclosure. The system can be expanded from 12 drives to 60 drives with 2 low cost, SAS connected EDAs (Expansion disk arrays). ReadyDATA supports many drive options to meet varying performance requirements including SATA 7200 rpm, SAS 10k RPM, SAS 15k RPM, and a variety of SSD drive options. The system ships with both dual 10GbE and dual 1GbE as standard. S i m p l e D e p l o y m e n t ( I n s t a n t P r o v i s i o n i n g ) Connect to the system via a supported web browser, browse to the storage tab and from there you can select drive and create a volume. This process takes less then 20 seconds. 4
I n s t a n t E x p a n s i o n Selecting multiple disks after creating a volume, allows you to easily expand and existing volume, instantly. This process is equally efficient, regardless of the number of drives you select to expand. P e r f o r m a n c e B o o s t i n g w i t h S S D ( H y b r i d V o l u m e s ) Selecting an existing volume and a free SSD drive, will give you the option to add Read Boost or Write boost. This capability allows a volumes performance to be increased by simply adding a write optimized or read optimized SSD drive to the system. Note: The review 5200 system has been configured with 10 SATA drives, 1 read optimized SSD and 1 write optimized SSD drive to allow a hybrid configuration. 5
U n l i m i t e d b l o c k - l e v e l S n a p s h o t C r e a t i o n Snapshots can either be created manually or automatically to provide hourly, daily or weekly recovery points on any data. This feature is enabled granularly at the Share or LUN level to allow the administrator to decide on an appropriate level of protection based on the importance of the data being stored within a given LUN or Share. S n a p s h o t R o l l b a c k o r I n s t a n t C l o n i n g To allow recovery of both LUNs and shares, the ReadyDATA timeline view gives the administrator the option to rollback any share or LUN to the past. The cloning option gives the administrator the ability to access full copies of past snapshots without capacity consumption. 6
V i r t u a l N e t w o r k I n t e r f a c e s a n d 1 0 G i g a b i t C o n n e c t i v i t y ReadyDATA supports virtual network interfaces (VNICs) which allows greater flexibility in deployment. Create multiple VNICs from a single physical NIC and assign each its own IP address. ReadyDATA also comes standard with 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports as well as 2 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports. This makes it ideal for more network demanding scenarios such as virtualization deployments. C l o u d M a n a g e d S m a r t B l o c k - l e v e l R e p l i c a t i o n ReadyDATA comes standard with Replicate, which is a cloud-based replication portal for multiple ReadyDATA systems. Simply connect it to an available network port. By default, the ReadyDATA will get an IP address from your DHCP server. Prior to setup, you will be able to view this IP address through RAIDar. RAIDar is an utility used to discover NETGEAR ReadyDATA & ReadyNAS devices on the network. You can download RAIDar here: 9
ReadyNAS RAIDar Note: Please make sure ReadyDATA has the latest firmware before testing. To update firmware: Login to the ReadyDATA web GUI and go to System -> Settings -> Update. 1. Make sure ReadyDATA is connected to the Internet. 2. Click on Check for Updates and the system will tell you whether or not you have the most current firmware. 3. If there is newer firmware, follow the on screen directions to download and install the latest firmware. For detailed instructions on the installation steps, please reference the ReadyDATA Installation Guide included in the box. Create a Volume on the ReadyDATA In order to preserve your settings, you must create at least one volume on the ReadyDATA. To create a volume: 1. In this window, name your date set, select whether or not you wish to enable Compression and Deduplication for this data set. Enable continuous snapshots by checking the Continuous checkbox and define your snapshot interval. Last but not least, you can define whether or not to use Thick or Thin provisioning for this data set as well as define the size of the LUN. Finally, click Create. 13
4. A new LUN has now been created. 5. Now go to the SAN page. 6. We must first create a LUN Group (iscsi target) for our newly created LUN to assign to. Click on the + button on the top right hand corner of this page. 7. A New LUN Group window will pop up. Give the LUN group a name and click Create. 8. A new LUN Group has now been created. Now right click on our previously created LUN and click on Assign To and select group 1. 14
9. Our LUN is now assigned to the LUN Group and ready to be used in iscsi deployments. Taking Snapshots and Rolling Back Data on ReadyDATA You have the option to schedule snapshots when you first create the data set. You can also manually take snapshots for any data set you create. Now we ll go through the easy steps to roll back to a certain snapshot. To manually take snapshots: 1. Browse to the Shares & LUNs page. 2. Right click on the data set you wish to take a snapshot of. 3. Name your snapshot and click Create. 4. And that s it! 15
To roll back to a certain snapshot: 1. Browse to the Shares & LUNs page. 2. Click on the clock icon for the snapshots tab 3. You ll now be taken to the Snapshots timeline page. One thing to note is that you can manage snapshots from any data set by simply selecting the data set you wish to manage on the left hand side. Click on the + and buttons to scroll through different time ranges (hourly, daily, weekly etc). To specify a certain date, click on the clock button right above the timeline to pull up a calendar. 16
4. Select which snapshot you d like to roll back to and right click on the snapshot on the timeline and select Rollback.
