SUMMER 2017 Welcome to YMCA Summer Camps In 1885, the YMCA helped to invent summer camp to provide children with positive and fun experiences that build confidence and new friendships. YMCA camp staff have served as positive role models for generations of campers and helped build future leaders. The centerpiece of YMCA camps are activities that excite and engage your child, giving them a summer filled with fun and adventure. Whether learning a new sport, discovering arts and culture or exploring the best of New York City, YMCA Summer Camps offer an opportunity to build wonderful lifelong memories and a feeling of community that will last beyond the summer. Each of our camps is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and our staff go through rigorous training to ensure the safety and positive experience of each child. Our Summer Sleepaway Camp is for youth ages 6-16 from all over the world and is located outside NYC in Huguenot, NY. There is a Counselor In Training (CIT) program for 16 year olds, as well as two villages, McAlister (ages 6-12) and Talcott (ages 12-15), that are located on 1,150 acres of forests and lakes. "My child has been in the Summer Camp Program at the Long Island City YMCA since he was 5 five years old. He is now 12 years old and still looks forward to his summers at the Y. As a parent, it is very reassuring that my child has a safe and fun place to go during the summer. The Y has become like a family to us, and I could not be more grateful for them." LONG ISLAND CITY YMCA SUMMER CAMP PARENT PROGRAMS Our YMCA camps have something unique to offer every age group, from our Kindercamp Programs to Teen Camp. Alongside sports, swimming and arts programs, the YMCA offers academic enrichment that is infused throughout the camp day. These programs include summer reading, journal writing and science activities. Our goal is to meet your child s developmental needs and provide a foundation for continued learning during the summer months. 4 FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WHAT FAMILIES NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DAY CAMP Scholarships REGISTRATION MADE EASY Government & Union Vouchers* We accept TWU Local 100, and 1199 SEIU vouchers. You must have your confirmation letter with you at the time of registration. 1 Visit the Long Island City YMCA s member services desk. DATES & HOURS OF OPERATION Long Island City YMCA Summer Day Camp is an eight-week program that runs from July 3rd August 25th. Please note that camp will not operate on July 4th in observance of Independence Day. 2 Select your camp 3 Submit a $50 deposit for each session you would like your child to attend. This will hold your child s spot for the designated sessions of camp. Registration for at least two weeks of camp Camp hours are from: 9:00 am 5:00 pm Extended Day hours are from: 7:30 am 9:00 am 5:00 pm 6:00 pm is required. 4 Take advantage of the 10% Early Bird Discount by paying off your entire balance by May 20, DAY CAMP OPEN HOUSES Saturday, February 25th 10:00 am 3:00 pm Credits If your child cannot attend camp for a period of time paid, you may submit a request for a credit along with documentation to the Camp Director. Please note that the deposit is non-refundable. Credits can be used for camp or towards any other programs throughout the year. Any credit requests will be submitted to the Camp Director and will be granted under the discretion of the Youth and Family Director. All requests should be made prior to the start of the session. Camp Gear 5 Submit your child s medical form completed with parent/guardian information and signature, as well as the doctor s information, Saturday, April 29th 10:00 am 3:00 pm signature and stamp. Keep extra copies of the medical forms. Saturday, May 20th 10:00 am 3:00 pm 6 7 Each camper will receive two free t-shirts and a camp bag. Swim caps will be provided on the camper s first day of swim. Camp t-shirts must be worn every day. Additional shirts can be purchased for $10 each or three for $25. On a campers designated swim day please pack a towel, swimsuit, change of clothing, and a plastic bag for wet swim gear. photos of your child. Lunch will also be provided free for campers by Department of Education School Food. Snack time is allotted but snack is not provided. Campers can bring their own lunch and snack, if they would like. Please pack water for your camper daily. The YMCA accepts all major Parent/ Guardian Orientation Submit two passport size credit cards or you may sign up for automatic billing to ensure payments are made on time with no late fees incurred. 6 The New York City's YMCA awards scholarships to campers based on the family s annual income. 5 SUMMER DAY CAMP OUR CAMP OPTIONS Early Childhood Camp AGE 3 Early Childhood Camp provides our youngest campers with handson, experiential, fun activities planned to support each child s social, physical and cognitive skill development. Activities include swimming, outdoor play, music and movement, and interactive science, language and literacy activities. Staff members experienced in engaging with preschoolers understand the importance of rich adult-child interactions and focus on building supportive, nurturing relationships with every camper. Early Childhood campers will enjoy campsite-based collaborations with child-friendly organizations and go on excursions within walking distance in their own communities. COST PER TWO WEEK SESSION session 1: member: $500 session 2-4: member: $570 Kindercamp non-member: $550 non-member: $620 AGES 4-5 Kindercamp is designed for children entering kindergarten in September Structured day camp activities support the transition to kindergarten by building social and emotional skills in a fun and nurturing environment; including a focus on classroom structure, transitional activities, and group play. Kindercampers will participate in instructional swimming, indoor and outdoor physical fitness, interactive science, literacy activities, theme-based arts and crafts, and local outings. They will have the opportunity to make new friends and take exciting trips throughout New York City. Campers will participate in a wide range of sports, instructional swimming, arts and crafts, and weekly themed days such as Crazy Hat Day. In addition, campers will engage in a variety of science, technology, engineering and math activities during each session. Traditional day campers will be divided into age groups with children within one to two years of their age. Research has shown that children can lose a half grade of learning over the summer months. To help mitigate summer learning loss, the YMCA offers interactive programs such as Book of the Week, which gives campers the opportunity to read books and participate in facilitated discussions. In addition, activities such as journaling and ageappropriate science experiments will expand their literacy, math and science skills, and promote their ability to think critically.field trips to museums and science centers will link to the camp-based activities and maximize educational enrichment. Long Island City Teen Camp AGES Teen Camp is for young people who are currently enrolled in middle school and is designed to immerse campers in a variety of fun activities that keep that will keep them active, learning and engaged during the summer months. Through a variety of hands-on activities, campers will expand their social skills and, explore science, the arts, and a variety of sports. All activities will focus on building skills, confidence and strong peer relationships, while also giving campers a sense of autonomy. Each session, campers will participate in community projects and citywide trips. 8 CAMP OPTIONS Traditional Sleepaway Camp Join us for an unforgettable summer! Our traditional Summer Sleepaway Camp offers three exciting opportunities for campers ages Camp McAlister (ages 7 10) is a fun, safe and nurturing introduction to the wonderful world of sleepaway camp. Camp Talcott (ages 11 14) features a wide range of exciting and challenging activities for slightly older campers. Our Counselor in Training (CIT) program (age 16) gives motivated teens the opportunity to develop leadership skills while having fun in the great outdoors. Across programs, campers from our branch and all over the world, enjoy a wide range of traditional camp activities including swimming, canoeing, sports,archery, arts & crafts, nature and outdoor skills,and fun on our floating, inflatable obstacle course! Optional additional activities include horseback riding, water skiing, and white water rafting. Combine any two consecutive sessions for a three week option by adding a stayover weekend camp. Our focus is to support each gymnast to develop new skills and improve existing ones. Every gymnast has the opportunity to train closely with our world class coaches. Our camp includes 16,000 sq feet of training space with first class vault stations and beam stations, competition bars, and two full exercise floors. Certified athletic trainers are on site and medical attention is available 24/7. For a nominal fee, register to stay over the weekend, take a rest, and join in for two weeks of training. During daily practice and evening Randori, our coaches evaluate skills to develop an individualized, training program for every camper. Our focus is to support each child and adult to learn new skills and to perfect their existing ones. Our camp includes six competition areas of two inch Dollamar Flexi-roll mats ideal for safe training and competition. Weightlifting and cardiovascular training equipment is available, and trainers and medical staff are on site 24/7.
