1 Accepted 17 April 2008 Updated 1 June 2010 Updated 9 May 2012 THE FINNISH DOCTORAL PROGRAMME IN NURSING SCIENCE: STRATEGY FOR INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION STARTING POINT FOR INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION The international strategy of the is in line with the general objectives of the Programme and collaborating universities. The Programme s international operations consist of collaboration in education (all courses are given by international lecturers and are open to foreign students), student and expert exchange, visits and research collaboration. PhD student and expert exchange takes place mainly through the Erasmus and Nordforsk exchange programmes (both), Fulbright programme (for experts) and collaborating universities bilateral agreements (both) as well as through the Cross-Border University. Exchange programmes vary in length from a couple of days (teacher/expert exchange minimum of 5-8 hours of teaching) to three to five months, depending on the universities bilateral agreements. 3 The collaborating universities have several international research projects in which PhD students can do their research. Individual research groups are responsible for their own international contacts. Nordic cooperation forms a major part of the Programme s international activities. There is active Nordic cooperation in the field of nursing research. The Programme organise a scientific symposium Collaboration between Nordic PhD students in collaboration with Lund University, Sweden; the University of Bergen, Norway and the University of Oslo, Norway annually since In addition, at Åbo Akademi University, for example, the focus of international research and education is on Nordic cooperation with PhD students in Norway, Sweden and Finland. There are close networks of cooperation in education between several departments. A post-doctoral network has been set up ten years ago. Post doctoral researchers are involved in supervision and research. By the end of 2007, 14 PhDs from Sweden and 5 from Norway have received their doctorate from Åbo Akademi University, most of them through research projects. At the moment there are 7 Swedish and 10 Norwegian PhD students at the university who are all involved in research projects (long-standing cooperation with Oslo University College, a common project with Oslo and Gothenburg University, hermeneutic observation research and research courses with the Sahlgrenska Academy and University of Stavanger, a Comfort project with Växjö University, cooperation with the University College of Borås, Karlstad University and the University of Eastern Finland in a Nordic network on childbearing, and cooperation with Karlstad University in a network on perioperative care). There have been discussions among others with the Karolinska Institutet to further broaden and intensify cooperation. The Director of the Programme s Board (HLK) is actively involved in the European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS). All board members are involved in international scientific societies and in the editorial boards of international scientific journals. MISSION AND AIMS The is part of a wider international scientific community. Its operating environment is global. Its key missions include the development of international research, education and expert cooperation. Internationalisation is materialised in PhD student exchange, expert exchange, in scientific projects, conferences, publications, and in agreements and networks between international partners. The Programme s international activities are realized in research, education, and communication and networking for example with partners in the Nordic countries, the Baltic states and through the European Academy of Nursing Science. The Programme s international research collaboration is based on the personal contacts of the PhD students, their supervisors, researchers and research teams. The Finnish Doctoral Programme in Nursing Science encourages PhD students to work closely with colleagues in highly respected international research organisations and universities. All international cooperation is geared to achieving a high standard of scientific and educational quality. The is active in inviting international experts and on the other hand in offering the knowhow of its own experts. All doctoral courses offered by the are in the English language, have international lecturers, and they are open to foreign PhD students.

4 VISION FOR INTERNATIONALISATION 2015 The is well-known internationally and has an attractive education offering, which is of a high standard (all courses are in the English language). is part of the international scientific nursing community and health sciences more generally. is internationally networked, appreciated as a partner and forms an international environment for both researchers and PhD students. has a strong international influence on the development of nursing science and nursing practice. has an effective and high-quality system of international exchange for PhD students and experts makes good use of the opportunities offered by five networking universities - the Universities of Eastern Finland, Oulu, Tampere, Turku and Abo Akademi - for the creation and maintenance of international connections. provides active information about its international outreach. The strategy will be discussed at Board meetings and developed on the basis of suggestions made by students and teachers.
