2 A Trip Not To Be Missed This trip offers students the chance to experience the great outdoors and wilderness. It will be a test of a student s physical and mental endurance as they participate in demanding and action-packed activities such as mountain biking, white water rafting, horse trekking, gondola rides and bungy jumping-all intended to push a student to their limits. Along with the physical skill, this trip will further develop a student s skills in the key competencies. In several activities they will be forced to co-operate with others in a team which will require them to relate to one another and be able to communicate effectively. The activities planned are designed to challenge their ability to think quickly and intuitively. While the intention of this trip is to further develop and promote a student s life skills, they are -above allencouraged to have a good time and fun. Queenstown-General Information Located in the lower regions of the South Island, Queenstown is a popular location amongst tourist for its awe-inspiring natural surroundings and picturesque views. The iconic Remarkable Mountains, Lake Wakatipu and the Alpine Resort are just a small tip of the ice-berg that is Queenstown. Set in the Southern Alps landscape, Queenstown offers many photo opportunities to be had. Queenstown has it all, for all four seasons of the year. Along with the scenery, Queenstown is also well known to be an adventurer s paradise, with a diverse variety of both fast paced and leisurely activities to really get the adrenalin pumping or not. Be it a jet boat ride, downhill mountain biking, bungy jumping, Golf or Horse trekking, Queenstown has something for everyone. And whilst you wait for yourself to recuperate from exhaustion caused by the day s fun, in Queenstown you have the omnipresent opportunity to gaze into the distance and be amazed by the panoramic views and scenery. 3 Accommodation Students will be staying at the YHA Lakefront Hostel. A comfortable hostel set by the shore of the tranquil Lake Wakatipu. Conveniently located a10 minute walk away from town, the hostel is located in a prime location for students to be quickly transported to the day s activities. Located in a quiet and secluded location, students are sure to receive a good s night rest for the following day s activities. The alpine lodge is fully equipped with facilities such as a library Exchange, TV room and internet access to keep them entertained and in touch. Breakfast will be served in the hostel dining facility prior to transportation to the day s scheduled activities. Students will be staying in groups of 6 six per dorm (boys to be separated from girls). They will be checking into the hostel immediately after they touchdown at Queenstown. They are booked to stay a total of 3 nights before checking out and returning home on the 21 st of September. 5 Activity Details Mountain Bike Tour On the Mountain Bike tour, students will receive the chance to cycle alongside Lake Wakatipu and witness picturesque scenery. The tour takes them through beautiful terrain where they will encounter tussock scenic high country and cycle through surrounding mountains-a pleasant and leisurely ride of kilometres taking between 5-6 hours - depending on fitness. The group will be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and cycle van for completely exhausted students. White Water Rafting The White water rafting activity is a half day event that sends students on a challenging ride down the Shotover River; a fast and action-paced activity that requires quick thinking and the co-operation of all team members. The ride puts students at the mercy of the river as the encounter rapids before being plunging them into the darkness of the 170m Oxenbridge Tunnel. Bungy Jump The bungee jump activity is one to really get the blood pumping as students plummet of the AJ Hackett Bridgethe world s first bridge bungy! And if that wasn t enough to the get the adrenalin flowing, students have the also the added option of being splashed waist-up in the Kawarau River. And whilst students wait in the queue for their jump into the abyss, they ll have the pleasure of being able to take in the panoramic scenery which surrounds the entire site. Gondola Ride A ride on the Skyline Gondola ride is must do in Queensland. The package sees students ascend 400m through an alpine forest, giving them a chance, once again, to take in the breath-taking scenery and a 360 panoramic view. Once at the top, students will be sent down again -partially- through the means of a thrilling luge ride on a winding track of bends and curves; an activity sure to challenge a student s motoring skills and coordination. Horse Trek A leisurely and pleasant ride is what awaits students as they embark on the horse trek. A final opportunity to savour the moment as their trip closes to an end. Students will ride through both flat and rugged terrain as they take in the alpine scenery and vistas, before stopping at a historic mining site for a brief history lesson. The group shall then return to base, occasionally stopping at old mining relics along the way. Page 5
