5 We made it, but for a price The scheme has been accepted and has attracted many SMEs new to the FP. The evaluation worked and results seem to be reliable. Pending legal validations, the 3- months TTG is in reach. We can't make everybody happy and emphasis is on the successful applications. Disclaimer These are the very first rounds of the SME Instrument. Beware of taking deep and elaborated conclusions after this initial round.

12 Results from the first Phase 1 cut-off on 18 June proposals received (our estimation was 2.500) success rate: 6% 2503 single company applications, 119 consortia with 2 SMEs, 34 with 3 and 6 with 4 SMEs proposals were eligible and evaluated (doublets, withdrawals, some incorrect templates or incomplete proposals)

13 Companies to be funded Out of the 2602 applications 317 (12%) are evaluated above threshold (13 points overall). Based on the positively evaluated applications per topic 155 companies will be funded (6%). 49% of applications above threshold will be funded every second "good" proposal is funded

14 Evaluators 34% were women. 12% came from universities and research institutes and 88% were from private commercial firms. 17 Company size all topics Half of applicant SMEs are micro-companies (< 5 employees). However funded companies tend to be bigger (33% are micro enterprises)

22 Objectives: Increase the participation of industry, SMEs and first time applicants in Horizon 2020 Stimulate private sector investment in research and innovation Promote research and innovation with a focus on value creation and accelerate the development of technologies into innovative products, processes and services Means: Full-scale pilot running in 2015 and 2016 In-depth assessment as part of interim evaluation 2017

23 Proposals relating to any technology field under LEITs and Societal Challenges (bottom-up driven logic) Open to any legal entity - consortia of 3 to 5 participants About 100 grants will be given Permanently open call with three cut-off-dates per year Impact criterion given a higher weighting in evaluations Time-to-grant: 6 months

24 Funding of innovation actions (close-to-market) For proposal involving technological innovation, the consortium must declare that the technologies are at least at TRL 6. Proposals shall include a business plan describing the business opportunities of participants and a credible commercialisation strategy. Particular attention should be paid to IP protection and ownership, and the possibility of commercial exploitation ('freedom to operate'). Initial market take-up no later than 3 years after submission.

25 at least 60% of the overall budget of the proposal must be allocated to consortium partner(s) from industry, or the minimum number of industry participants must be 2 in a consortium of 3 or 4 partners, and 3 in a consortium of 5 partners. The maximum EU contribution per project is EUR 3 million. The indicative EU contribution per project is expected to be between EUR 1 million and EUR 2 million.
