3 USING THE EARBUDS Your minimedia player earbuds have a unique lanyard design, which lets you wear minimedia around your neck. Thread the attachment through minimedia as shown. Screw on the lanyard earbuds. Adjust the beads so that you can slip the earbuds over your head and around your neck comfortably. ADJUST VOLUME You adjust volume on your minimedia player via a submenu option on each media function. Make sure to follow the below 3 steps to establish a comfortable listening level: 1. Begin by adjusting the volume control to a low level. 2. Slowly raise the volume until you can hear the audio clearly. 3. Set the volume control dial to this position and leave it there. BASIC USE minimedia is simple to use! Hook up minimedia to your computer, transfer music, video or photo files from your computer to your player, sit back and enjoy! 2
4 Your minimedia player comes partially charged, so when you take it out of the box, it s ready to play!* * If the battery becomes depleted, your computer may not recognize the player. Here s what to do: (1) Turn your massively mini MEDIA player OFF; and (2) connect it to your computer via the USB cable. A full recharge takes 8 hours. After 1 hour recharging, your computer will recognize the player. The equipment is to be supplied from an identified USB port complying with the requirements of Limited Power Source. minimedia buttons do different things depending on how you press them. As you read these instructions, you ll see the terms below, used in step-by-step directions. Note the terms and what they mean: Touch Touch the button quickly and release. Touch for one second. Press-and-hold Press the button, hold for 3 seconds, and release. The more you use minimedia, the more you ll get accustomed to these differences. Power ON/OFF Slide the On/Off switch on the side of the player to the up (on) or down (off) position. After a start-up animation sequence, you will be taken to the Main Menu. Sleep Mode To put minimedia to sleep, press-andhold the PLAY/PAUSE button. After an animation sequence, the screen will go dark. To wake minimedia up, press-and-hold PLAY/PAUSE again. Lock Press-and-hold the REC/HOLD button at any time to lock your player, so that nothing happens when keys are pressed. To unlock your player, pressand-hold REC/HOLD again. The recording (REC) function works only in Radio Mode: see p
5 UNDERSTANDING THE MENU Scroll through the Main Menu by touching the NEXT/ BACK buttons. Note the icons and what you can do there: VIDEO - Access and watch your AMV video files. MUSIC -Access and listen to your mp3 or WMA music files. PHOTO - Access and look at your JPG photo files. RADIO - Access the FM radio. You can listen to the radio and record from the radio. PLAYBACK - Access and listen to WAV files of audio you record off the radio. SETTINGS - Change settings on your minimedia, such as Brightness, Screen Saver, etc. (see p. 16). To select any of these modes, touch the MENU button when you are on the icon you want. To exit to the Main Menu at any time, press-and-hold the MENU button. 4
6 MOVING FILES ONTO YOUR PLAYER You can move any type of file onto your minimedia, but if the file is not in the correct format, minimedia will not play it: Video must be in AMV format Audio must be in mp3 or WMA format Photos must be in JPG format To convert video files to the AMV format, see p. 14. To move audio and video files onto your minimedia player: 1. Take the USB cable that came with your minimedia player and connect one end to your player s USB port and the other end to your computer s USB port.* Turn the player on. 2. Look at your computer and go to My Computer : minimedia will show up as a removable storage device. The computer will recognize minimedia and assign it to the next available drive (for example, the F drive). Double-click on this drive to open it, in a window. 4 minimedia is a removable storage device. The computer will recognize minimedia as a mass storage device and assign it to the next available drive (for example, the F drive). 5
7 3. Find the computer files you wish to move onto minimedia. Select the files, drag the files onto the minimedia drive. Select the files, and drag the files onto the minimedia drive. 4. The files will copy to the minimedia player. 5. In the player window, you may remove files and also create and name folders to organize your files. * The first time you connect your minimedia player to your computer, it will be recognized as new hardware. If your minimedia player does not have enough memory to accept the files, your computer will let you know. NOTE: minimedia comes with some preloaded video content. To save this content and watch it later, drag the files from your minimedia player to your computer. Then delete the files from minimedia to make room for new files. NOTE: Touching minimedia while it is transferring files will disrupt the USB connection. To resume transfer, turn your player off, and on again. 6
8 LISTEN TO MUSIC minimedia plays audio files in mp3 and WMA format only. Using Music Mode From the Main Menu, touch NEXT/BACK to find Music Mode. Touch MENU to select it, and you will see this screen appear: Current Play Mode Bit rate per second of music file being played File Format File name File number Number of items in folder Equalizer your current equalizer setting Volume setting Time signature 1 playing time of file Time signature 2 total time of file Name of Folder Battery indicator Play/Pause mode When you are listening to an audio file, press-and-hold NEXT/BACK to fast-forward or rewind. To access the next file in the folder, touch NEXT/BACK. Touch MENU to access the submenu and touch MENU to select an option: Volume Set -- Touch NEXT/BACK to adjust volume. To save the setting, touch MENU or leave the player alone for approximately 5 seconds. 7
9 Local Folder Touch NEXT/BACK to scroll through your folders of saved files. Select File (option available when no file is playing) Touch MENU to access Select File, and touch NEXT/ BACK to scroll through files. To select a file, touch MENU. You will be taken to the Music screen. Touch PLAY/ PAUSE to play, or stop. Delete File Deleting a file deletes it permanently. You also have the option to Delete All files. Play Mode This submenu gives you the option to listen to your files: in a Normal mode; to play all files in a folder; to repeat one or all files; and to repeat all files in a folder. Shuffle This gives you the option to listen to files in random order. Equalizer (option available only during playing of audio file) An equalizer changes the tonal quality of music being played. minimedia comes with several equalizer pre-settings, organized according to music genre. Listen for the setting you like best: you don t need to listen to classical music on the classical setting or jazz on the jazz setting. Intro Plays first 10 seconds of each file in folder Exit exit submenu To exit to the Main Menu at any time, press-and-hold the MENU button. 8
10 WATCH VIDEO minimedia allows you to watch video files, provided they are in an AMV format. If a file is not in this format for example, in a MPEG, AVI, or WMV format it must be converted to an AMV format. See p. 14 for information on file conversion. 12 LISTEN TO THE RADIO From the Main Menu, touch NEXT/BACK to find Radio Mode and touch MENU to select this mode. 1. You will see the Radio bandwidth. minimedia automatically goes to the last radio station you were listening to. 2. When you press-and-hold the NEXT/ BACK buttons, minimedia searches for the next available radio station. 3. Touch NEXT/BACK to adjust the FM setting incrementally. If you don t know the number of the station, watch for the Available Station icon, or listen for the station to come in clearly. NOTE: Your earbuds must be attached to the player, to seek stations. To exit the submenu, scroll to Exit on the menu and touch MENU. Volume Set -- Touch NEXT/BACK to adjust volume. To save the setting, touch MENU or leave the player alone for approximately 5 seconds. 11
13 Save When you are on a station you want to save, touch MENU. Select Save and touch MENU. The saved radio station is assigned a number, visible in the lower left corner of the Radio Screen. To scroll through your saved stations, touch PLAY/PAUSE. You will see your saved station numbers change. You may save up to 20 radio stations. You cannot save the same radio station twice (for example, as both #4 and #10). Delete -- When you are on a station you want to delete, touch MENU. Select Delete and touch MENU: this deletes the station. If you have more than one saved station, deleting one station shifts the other stations after it one up in the numbered queue: that is, if you have 3 saved stations and you delete saved station #1, saved station #3 becomes #2, and #2 becomes #1. Delete All Select Delete All and touch MENU: this deletes all saved radio stations. Auto Search Selecting Auto Search initiates a scan of the radio bandwidth to automatically save those stations the player can receive. Touch PLAY/PAUSE to scroll through the saved stations. Record -- When you are on a station you want to record from, either (a) touch the REC button or (b) access the submenu to select Record and touch MENU to begin recording. (You ll see a small dot at the bottom of your player screen, telling you recording is in progress.) To pause recording, touch PLAY/PAUSE; to stop recording and save, touch MENU. Exit exit submenu 12
14 PLAYBACK RECORDED FILES Audio files recorded from the radio are saved to your minimedia player as WAV files. To access them, go to the Main Menu and select PLAYBACK mode. You will see numbered files saved as REC. Touch the NEXT/ BACK buttons to select the file you want, and touch PLAY/PAUSE to play, and PLAY/PAUSE again to pause.* * You can easily rename a WAV file when your player is connected to your computer. To exit to the Main Menu at any time, press-and-hold the MENU button. VIEW PHOTOS Using Photo Mode minimedia allows you to store and view photos and images in a JPG format. From the Main Menu, touch NEXT/BACK to find Photo Mode. Touch MENU to select this mode. Touch NEXT/ BACK to scroll through JPG files, and touch PLAY/PAUSE to view the file. Touch PLAY/PAUSE again to stop. Touch MENU to access the submenu: Local Folder Touch NEXT/BACK to scroll through your folders of saved files. Playback Set See your images in either Manual View or Auto Play (slideshow). The Auto Play option lets you set how many seconds pass between changing images. Touch PLAY/PAUSE to begin a slideshow, and touch PLAY/PAUSE again to stop. 13
15 Delete File This option deletes files permanently. Exit exit submenu To exit to the Main Menu at any time, press-and-hold the MENU button. CONVERT VIDEOS minimedia comes with a software mini-disc. This software converts video files to the correct format for your player. There are two pieces of software on the disc: The Video Converter lets you convert video files to an AMV format so you can watch them on your minimedia player. The AMV Video Player lets you watch AMV video files on your computer. Here s how to install the software onto your computer: 1. Take the enclosed mini-disc and insert it into your computer.* 2. The software will install itself automatically. Follow the prompts in the Set-Up Wizard. 3. Confirm the installation, and click Close when it s done. A shortcut to these software programs should appear on your desktop automatically. Or you can look under Start/ Programs Tiger Electronics/ minimedia. * minimedia software is not Mac OS compatible. 14
16 Here s how to convert video files to the AMV format: 1. Open the minimedia Video Converter tool. Default Location for converted file. Convert 2. Click on the Get File icon and browse for the file you want to convert. minimedia software can convert most unprotected AVI, MPEG, or WMV files. 3. Click on the Save To icon to browse for a place on your computer to save this file or accept the default location. 4. Click the Convert button to begin file conversion. Once conversion is complete, the AMV Video Player will open and you can preview the file. 15
17 Once the process is complete, your converted file, in AMV format, will be saved to your computer. You re now ready to transfer it to your minimedia player. For information on how to move files to your minimedia player, see p. 5. CHANGE SETTINGS Change minimedia settings by choosing Settings from the Main Menu. Screen Set -- The feature lets you adjust the brightness of your display. Touch MENU to select Brightness and touch NEXT/BACK to set Brightness level between 0 and 15. To save the setting, touch MENU or leave the player alone for approximately 5 seconds. Language -- Use this feature to change the language used on your minimedia player: either English, French, or Spanish. Power Off -- Set the time for minimedia either to shut down ( Off Time, in seconds) or enter Sleep Time (in minutes) when not in use. (If you re listening to the radio and not pressing any buttons, this still counts as being in use. ) Touch NEXT/BACK to set the time in seconds. When your player is in sleep mode, press-and-hold PLAY/PAUSE to wake it up. Waking up your player will disable previous Sleep Time settings. NOTE: To disable Off Time or Sleep Time, set level to zero (0). 16
18 Screen Saver -- Program minimedia so that when you re not using it, it will go into Screen Saver mode. Pressing any key will disrupt this mode and reactivate the player. ScrSav Off Touching MENU with this option highlighted will shut off the Screen Saver Mode and return you to the submenu. ScrSav On Touching MENU on this option will bring you to a submenu where you can select 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 seconds for the screen saver to activate. To select a time, touch NEXT/BACK and touch MENU to save. Select Touching MENU on this option will bring you to a menu of three (3) options for a Screen Saver. To view the options, touch NEXT/BACK to highlight an option and touch MENU. To save this selection, touch MENU. Memory Info -- This feature tells you how much (%) memory you have left on your player. Restore -- This feature resets minimedia to default settings in English. Firmware -- This feature gives you firmware information on your minimedia player. Exit -- exit submenu To exit to the Main Menu at any time, press-and-hold the MENU button. 19 BATTERY INFORMATION WARNING: Risk of fire, explosion, and burns. Do not disassemble, crush, heat above 100 C (212 F), or incinerate. The Lithium-Ion battery in this product is not replaceable. Dispose of the whole product according to local recycling or waste regulations never disassemble. To Recharge the Battery 1. Switch your minimedia player off. 2. Connect your minimedia player to your computer with the USB cable. 3. Switch your player on. An image on the minimedia screen will tell you it is recharging. minimedia comes with a partially charged lithium-ion battery, which can t be replaced. The battery lasts approximately 4 hours for video and up to 8 hours for music, per charge; it should last approximately 400 charges. A battery indicator on minimedia will show you when it s time to recharge the battery. To recharge the battery, switch minimedia player off. Connect minimedia player to your computer with USB cable. Switch player on. An image onscreen will tell you it is recharging. NOTE: Touching minimedia while it is charging will disrupt the USB connection. To resume charging, turn your player off, and on again. FCC STATEMENT - This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. 20 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE I don t hear any sound. FM radio feature is not working well: the music has a lot of static. I ve having problems transferring media files to my minimedia. I ve transferred a file to minimedia, but the file will not play. I ve formatted my player and I m experiencing technical difficulties. When I connect my player to the computer, the computer does not recognize the player. Damaged files may be unplayable. minimedia may be experiencing interference from nearby power supplies or appliances: turn appliances off or move to a new location. Adjust the position of the player and earbuds. Check your USB cable connection: make sure you are properly connected to the computer and that your minimedia player is on. Make sure you have enough memory on minimedia to accept new files. The file must be in one of these formats: AMV (video); JPG (photo); mp3 or WMA (music). NOTE: minimedia cannot convert or play rightsprotected video or music files such as music or video purchased from an online distribution site. minimedia s internal 128MB flash memory supports only FAT format. Turn your minimedia player off. Connect it to your computer via the USB cable. A full recharge takes 8 hours. After 1 hour recharging, your computer will recognize the player.
