Designing Process Management Solutions using Open Standards and Patterns Part 1: Why BPM? Dr. Jana Koehler IBM Zurich Research Laboratory ZRL BIT at a Glance Computer Science at ZRL: Security/Cryptography and Systems Management Process Management (BPM) and Software Technology (Eclipse/Jazz) (BIT): modeling languages, formal methods and verification, software engineering, software architecture Key focus: compiler technology for process-oriented languages & IT architecture design methods Main transfer channel: IBM WebSphere product family Participation in industry standards, customer consulting 2 Process Management 1
Learning Objectives Understand and apply key concepts of Process Management (BPM) BPM software lifecycle and technology stack Process modeling using the Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) Quality Assurance in BPM: Process patterns and anti-patterns 4 Parts with Exercises 1. Why BPM? 2. BPMN 3. Patterns/Anti-patterns 4. Beyond process modeling 3 Process Management Innov8 BPM Game What is BPM? Process Management 2
IBM Zurich Research Laboratory - Processes and Processes A process is a naturally occurring or designed sequence of changes of properties of an object or system A business process is a set of activities including people, IT systems, and other machines acting on information and raw materials that allow a business to produce goods and services and deliver them to its customers operational aspect of processes Activities are not independent of each other they require resources they create physical/virtual objects and change the state of these objects they serve a purpose (a goal that may remain implicit) they result from the interaction of humans and technical systems with each other 5 Process Management IBM Zurich Research Laboratory - Process Management A business is a collection of business processes (re-) engineering business processes to be efficient is one of the primary functions of a company's management one of the most fundamental mechanisms that drives advances in our society Process Management (BPM) is a structured approach to improve and manage the life cycle of business processes including modeling, analysis and design, deployment and execution, monitoring, and optimization Creating a model for a process provides insights to improve the design of a process modeling tools support process simulation 6 Process Management 3
T Case Study: Context & Problems Wholesale subsidiary of large telecommunications company T (former monopolist, deregulated) provides wire line and wireless telephony services to retailer subsidiary of T and to 150 other companies, called Virtual Providers (VSPs) one physical telephony network, owned and operated by T Strategic imperative of T: drive down cost of operations by interacting with VSPs efficiently Response: single, partially automated order management system VSPs are expected to use the order management processes of T to connect, configure, or disconnect telephony services for their end users multiple channels required, including the World-Wide Web (Internet) 7 Process Management System Context Diagram uses VSP 1 (Browser) VSP 2 (Other System via Web ) Internal Channel for T Staff T Order Management System Customer Database Telephony Network Billing System 8 Process Management 4
Functional Requirements PSTN Public Switched Telephone Network VSP 1 (Browser) VSP 2 (Other System via Web ) Internal Channel for T Staff T Two Order Management Processes: PSTN, PSTN : About 20 steps per process, taking up to 24 hours to complete. Steps include: 1. Address validation complex and requiring several user interactions 2. Resource reservation, e.g. copper transmission path, telephone number Customer Database Telephony Network Billing System 9 Process Management Why is BPM a #1 Priority for any CIO/CEO today? Compliance transparency and documentation of all business activities integrated risk management of processes beyond enterprise boundaries and involving business partners Productivity improvements and efficiency faster response time and Straight-Through processing cost pressure full cost control and visibility at executive level required Internationalization, Globalization, Acquisitions/Mergers require IT landscape renovation B2B integration including suppliers and customers novel IT technologies for encapsulation and reuse (SOA, MashUps, SaaS, Cloud) Going Green sustainable resource management 10 Process Management 5
IBM Zurich Research Laboratory - Trend 1: Programming Languages More powerful primitives and interfaces for higher levels of abstraction new programming languages emerge that come with synchronous and asynchronous communication paradigms, parallel computation constructs,, define new industry standards (e.g. BPMN, BPEL, WSDL) leave difficult tasks to intermediaries (e.g. compilers) our main research goal is to develop a compiler for the language BPMN reduce numbers of programming errors static analysis is one of the main tasks of a compiler, verification technology is leveraged here, patterns can also help users reduce development and maintenance costs leverage change management and refactoring in new programming tools capture and reuse architectural decision knowledge 11 Process Management IBM Zurich Research Laboratory - Trend 2: Distributed Systems Distributed systems are great, but they increase the complexity of development and maintenance significantly things happen that do not happen in a normal program, (caused by) asynchronous communication, parallelism, loose coupling of systems A research topic: the ever widening gap between conventional programming languages and what happens in a distributed system clean semantics of new communication primitives BPMN 2.0 Standard: formalization of language constructs techniques to automatically recover from errors at design time: static analysis localizes errors and offers repair options to user at run-time: intelligent and autonomous behavior (agents) 12 Process Management 6
IBM Zurich Research Laboratory - Trend 3: MDA + Workflow Management Systems Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) influences modern workflow technology business process modeling in a modeling language make this a normal system programming exercise Translation into an IT solution by IT department assisted by code generation methods (model-driven development trend) Different technologies for Enterprise Application Integration, Distributed Systems/Computing, and Workflow Management Systems these technologies are currently converging as are the application scenarios and use cases develop a systematic approach that closes -IT gap BPM/SOA Technology 13 Process Management From Enterprise Application Integration and Workflow Systems to BPM/SOA Vollmer & Peyret: The Forrester Wave : Integration-Centric Process Management Suites, Q Process Management 7
