1 Malmo Overseas Exchange Getting There Access to Malmo is via Copenhagen International Airport, then by express train across the sea via the Oresund Bridge. The trip takes around 35 minutes in a very comfortable train. Be prepared to be checked by customs as you travel. 1

2 Before You Go Pack for cold weather. The temperature can get down to -27 degrees in the winter, which is when you will be arriving. Make sure you include some thermals in your luggage. You should, however, be able to catch the winter sales when you get there. Check out your options for a cash passport card which you can reload. You should be able to exchange money at the post office with no fees attached. Apply for a visa before you go. When you arrive you apply for a residency permit. 2

3 Travel Malmo is bike friendly; there are plenty of bike trails and maps are available at the tourist office. It s also easy to walk around the city. Your accommodation is around 15 minutes walk from the main shopping district. It is easy and safe for you to ride your bike to and from practice, even at night. It s about a ten minute ride to the hospital and the terrain is flat. You don t even need to wear a helmet. There is a secure area to store your bike at Rönnen where you will be living. 3

Travel There is good public transport; buses run almost 24/7 and the service is reliable, even in bad weather. All lines go through the Central Station or Gustav Adolf Square.

You can t buy a ticket on the bus, it must be purchased at one of the stations or the tourist office. You can buy a multi trip ticket which gives you credit; when your credit runs out you renew. 4

5 Culture Malmo is very multicultural successfully mixing the old with the new. Almost everyone speaks English. The museum is definitely worth a visit or two. Streets are cobblestones and very confusing to start with. Each street leads around in a triangle joined with small alleys. Bars are warm and friendly; eating out is quite cheap and outside dining is encouraged with good heating and a blanket on every seat! 5

7 Police presence is high in the city after 5:00 pm. It s easy and comfortable to walk and dine after dark. Health Science Faculty Malmo University Malmo Health Science Faculty is located within the hospital grounds - Building 49. The hospital complex is huge and very spread out. It is around 5 minutes walk from Gustav Adolf Square bus station. From this station you can catch a bus to Rönnen. The University has many schools spread throughout the city. There is a main library in the city but the Health Science Faculty has its own library. You may find some of the resources you need are in Swedish. * Note - You would be advised to take your Harvard s Nursing Guide to Drugs with you. Malmo University Main Library Malmo University 7

8 Recreation Yes, there is a beach just a bus ride away. You can also fish from the pier in the middle of the city. There is a fun park nearby, there is a gymnasiums but they are quite expensive. There are lovely walking paths and parks throughout the city. 8

9 Rönnen Australian students usually stay at Rönnen while they are in Malmo. It is the least expensive of the accommodation options and is clean and only a short distance from the hospital and the university. There are students from many nationalities in Rönnen and you will make many new friends there. Rönnen was previously a hospital which has been very successfully converted. The rooms are cosy with an ensuite bathroom. You will need to pay a deposit plus one month s rent before you arrive. Rent is then paid a month in advance by direct deposit; you are notified via when it is due. Each room contains a bed, a desk, and a wardrobe. You will need to buy wireless internet. You are provided with a new doona and pillow for a small fee, and you will need to buy linen, curtains and a shower curtain. There is an IKEA store close by. Maintenance is available on request, at no charge unless the damage has been caused by you. When students leave there is a thorough inspection for cleaning, even down to removing the shower grate. Rönnen There is a large supermarket close by and street markets selling fresh fruit and vegetables at good prices. Be prepared there is a rent rise around April each year Expect your room costs to rise by 2 2.5%. 9

11 The kitchen is for all on your floor to share and is spacious and clean. You have your own cupboard, a shelf in the fridge for your food and there is a communal cupboard which is stocked with spices and sauces left by previous students. There is a shared laundry. Cleaning is on a roster system between residents and it is important for you to do your share; very much frowned upon if you don t! The most important thing is to make the most of every opportunity you have while you are in Malmo. Take every chance to see all you can of the city, of Sweden, Denmark and surrounding European countries. Your learning opportunities will be vast and varied and you will be well supported whilst you are there, both locally and by your academic support in Tasmania. Enjoy!! 11
