7 Distribution - OSP Fiber and copper have been the standard IPTV delivery mechanisms. Now middleware and STBs are available that allow IPTV to also be distributed over coax using the same headend Coax distribution requires additional headend equipment for QAM modulation of the IPTV signal Requires STB with built-in QAM tuner. Utilizes DOCSIS cable modem either external to STB or integrated within the STB for IP communication back to the headend. APRIL 27-30, 2014 ACE/RUS SCHOOL AND SYMPOSIUM 7

8 Distribution In-Home Multiscreen Support Adaptive Bit Rate Video Alternatives Adobe Systems HTTP Dynamic Streaming Apple HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) Microsoft Smooth Streaming MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) The only alternative that is currently standardized Adopted by 3GPP for use over wireless networks. 10 Distribution In-Home Whole-Home DVR Allows user to record a program on a local (master) STB and play it back on any TV in the home. Requires either a home gateway serving video to multiple televisions or a master/slave STB arrangement where the master location contains the hard drive for storage of recorded content and the slave locations can access that content. In either case, IP connectivity is required between gateway/master location and each TV. Be aware of the maximum read/write capacity of the hard drive in the STB you are using. 11 Distribution In-Home Network DVR Service provider stores recorded programs to allow all authorized end users to watch them regardless of whether that individual recorded the program or not. Examples are Restart and On Demand functions. Requires unicast video stream from service provider to STB. As this is not a shared stream, bandwidth savings from protocols such as IGMP are eliminated. 12 Distribution In-Home Remote Storage DVR Allows end-user to record content that is then stored by the service provider. Only the end-user who recorded the content would have authorization to view that content. More content providers are coming on board with the idea of RS-DVR, but still major players missing. Check your content contracts! Requires unicast video stream from service provider to STB. As this is not a shared stream, bandwidth savings from protocols such as IGMP are eliminated. More bandwidth! 13 Distribution In-Home Maintenance / Support / Control TR-069 Broadband forum standard for CPE WAN Management Originally issued in 2004 with 5 amendments the most recent of which was November Allows CSRs to Provision/Manipulate customer STB remotely Avoid truck roll while educating customer at the same time. Instant gratification for customer by fixing simple issues on the spot. Can allow CSR online view of customer remote Can allow realtime feedback of customer video stream to CSR. 14 Distribution In-Home App Integration into STB Integrates weather, Netflix, Vudu, etc. into the STB as a quick link or as a virtual channel OTT will be discussed later in this session. When integrating apps into the STB, pay close attention to security. 16 New Video Standards UltraHD 4k (Hi-Vision in Japan) 3840 pixels wide x 2160 pixels tall Four times the information of 1080 HD video! UltraHD 8k (Super Hi-Vision in Japan) 7680 pixels wide x 4320 pixels tall Sixteen times the information of 1080 HD video! APRIL 27-30, 2014 ACE/RUS SCHOOL AND SYMPOSIUM 16

17 New Compression Standards High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Successor to H.264 / MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC Known as H.265 (ITU-T) and MPEG-H Part 2 (ISO/IEC) The good: Estimated to compress video nearly 2x from current MPEG4/H.264. Enjoying wide adoption across multiple industries. The not so good: Estimated to require 10x the processing power on the encode side (headends) and 2x the processing power on the decode side (e.g. STBs) compared to H.264(MPEG4) so may require hardware replacement. 18 New Compression Standards VP9 (Google) Successor to the VP8 standard (competitor to MPEG4) Similar results as HEVC, but VP9 is open and royalty free. Supported by YouTube, some Smart TVs, and recently on some encoders. APRIL 27-30, 2014 ACE/RUS SCHOOL AND SYMPOSIUM 18

19 New HDMI Standard HDMI 1.4 a/v can only support 4k resolution up to 30 frames per second (fps). It cannot support 4k at either 50 or 60 fps. HDMI 2.0 (Also called HDMI UHD) released in September Allows up to 4096x2160 at 60fps so will support 4k but not 8k! Uses the same connector and same cables as HDMI 1.4 Is backward compatible to older HDMI standards May only require a software upgrade for HDMI ports on existing hardware this will likely vary by manufacturer. 20 The Net work Result More bandwidth will be required for services in the future: Network or Remote DVR unicast streams will drive up the bandwidth required to the home. Multiscreen video watching, while individually less bandwidth per stream, will greatly increase the number of possible devices requiring video bandwidth in the home. 4k TV (four times the information) plus HEVC (two times the compression) requires approximately two times the bandwidth when compared to MPEG4 HD streams. 8k TV (sixteen times the information) plus HEVC (two times the compression) requires approximately eight times the bandwidth when compared to MPEG HD streams. 21 The Net work Result Takeaway: Even with implementation of better compression and with adaptive bit rate streaming, bandwidth demand of subscribers is going to continue to increase as those subscribers demand better picture quality, more channels, and more convenient access to programming.
