1 Job Title Job Holder Salary Location Reporting to: Responsible for: Senior Software Developer 36,630-48,840 Wigston, Leicester Head of Business Systems Producing solutions for the Institution and support a portfolio of applications. To manage a portfolio of smaller developments, prioritising between new developments and maintaining existing software. To be responsible for the software development life cycle for applications developed or procured. Budget Responsibilities: To recommend the appropriate budget to support a project, including costs and required effort. Main purpose of the role (general tasks) 1. To be a Senior Software Developer and develop or procure software applications working to defined quality driven standards; 2. To create and document solution designs, mapping to business requirements and ensuring all applications are of high quality before they are released to Quality Assurance; 3. To manage a portfolio of smaller developments, whilst balancing priorities between new functional development and maintenance of existing software; 4. To be responsible for the software development life cycle for applications developed or procured; 5. To keep software and systems up to date; 6. To assist the Head of Business Systems with creating a 3-5 year development plan to support the overarching corporate strategy; 7. Coach staff and assist in their technical skills development; 8. To be able to support Analysts, (undertaking requirements definition), Software Architect (functional and systems design) and overseeing release of software into production; 9. To assist Quality Assurance Engineers in ensuring quality driven development and assist in testing automation; 10. To support the Head of Business Systems to define and work to IOSH Development, Quality and Release Standards; 11. To liaise with our outsource providers, and support any custom code / systems which are delivered; 12. To liaise with project managers highlighting risks and issues; 13. Point of escalation for software issues; 14. Working with the Head of Business Systems, continuously develop your skills and create and complete your personal development plan; 15. Look for opportunities to implement new technology to support the Institutions strategic objectives. Key activities (detailed tasks) 1
2 Application Development 16. To be a Senior Software Developer and develop or procure software applications working to defined Quality Driven Standards, approved project priorities and timescales and deliver to agreed standards and quality expectations; 17. To develop applications for a mobile taskforce / customer base, on mobile devices; 18. Undertake software design for new software components and for modifications. Define and agree design criteria and principles, use industry practice to ensure software is designed to achieve performance, integrity, resilience and usability; 19. To create and document solution designs, mapping to business requirements and ensuring all applications are high quality before they are released to Quality Assurance; 20. Review software design and functional requirements against 3rd party software availability and provide objective evidence to support build or buy decisions; 21. To manage a portfolio of smaller developments, whilst balancing priorities between new functional development and maintenance of existing software; 22. To be responsible for the software development life cycle for applications developed or procured; 23. To keep software and systems up to date; 24. To ensure that systems administration, performance tuning and that applications are designed to operate effectively in high availability resilient servers that supports Institutions disaster recovery processes; 25. Work closely with key stakeholder (Internal and external) on developing and maintaining effective Business Intelligence systems and solutions to ensure maximum high quality intelligence is provided in a self-service platform; 26. Provide system integration services that clearly supports the applications layers, supports business processes, maintains data architecture and is efficient and effective; 27. Working with the Infrastructure Team, design and document the systems hardware and network infrastructure; 28. Ensure that Data and Applications security is maintained and surpasses best practice, ensuring risks are managed. Strategy 29. To assist the Head of Business Systems with creating 3-5 year development plan to support the Overarching Corporate Strategy; 30. Develop and maintain, a robust systems and solutions architecture design for IOSH systems reflecting legacy, direction, strategy, security, usability and good architectural practice. Change 31. To be able to support Analysts, (undertaking requirements definition), Software Architect (functional and systems design) and overseeing release of software into production; 32. To be aware of the People side of change management and work with the Leadership team in supporting a change cultural; Quality 33. To assist Quality Assurance Engineers in ensuring quality driven development and assist in testing automation, achieving defined KPIs; 34. To support the Head of Business Systems to define and work to IOSH Development, Quality and Release Standards; 35. Work with the relevant teams in defining success and quality criteria and plans for systems that may impact or change new/existing processes. Contract Management 2
3 36. To liaise with our outsource providers, and support any custom code / systems which are delivered; 37. Support relationships with key suppliers ensuring IOSH priorities are met. Project Management 38. To liaise with project managers highlighting risks and issues; 39. When required, manage small project teams responsible for creating and delivering applications in line with IOSH s project time line (working to project management methodologies). General 40. Point of escalation for software issues; 41. Working with the Head of Business Systems, continuously develop your skills and create and complete your personal development plan; 42. Coach staff and assist in their technical skills development. 43. Look for opportunities to implement new technology in support of the Institutions strategy objectives; 44. To support the IOSH Team, members and the customers. Improve communications and support collaboration; 45. To support the IT Systems business recovery plans including their regular testing; 46. To carry out any reasonable duties within the remit of the role. 47. Be aware of both membership sector trends and technology and industry trends relevant to the portfolio, and will be required to proactively push and promote these within IOSH. 48. To Support and work closely with the Marketing, Knowledge, Product and Content Management teams across the Institution. Key results 1. Quality and secure applications that support the business needs and corporate strategy delivered in a robust, timely manner. 2. Working with the Head of Business Systems and I.S. Team Driven Processes Business systems development activities delivered to meet contract with PMO for each project 3. Excellence in quality of systems and quality of service 4. All technical aspects of IOSH s online systems, provide a robust environment, first class user experience and integrated analytics into the IOSH BI systems; 5. To provide applications that are effective, easy to use, secure, adheres to PCI, legislation and ensures that IOSH data remains secure, accurate and error free; 6. Seamless effective service between completing new development, passing into operational activities and rolled out to the business 7. Business Intelligence solutions provide high quality intelligence in a self-service platform to key stake holders whilst not compromising security. 8. Support and Infrastructure teams Customers, volunteers and members Software vendors and partners Design agencies Business consultants Systems and security specialists Person Specification Criteria Essential Desirable Qualifications A degree, or equivalent, in an IT related discipline Experience Extensive experience of software development in a professional capacity, meeting agreed standards for quality, documentation, date and functionality Experience of developing for mobile platforms Experience in Supporting Microsoft applications, Windows Server Experience in developing in MS SharePoint, Microsoft Dynamics & Flow Significant experience in designing the UI and exceptional user experience for applications and websites Experience of application release management Sitecore Development/DMS with Sitecore Certification Quality Assurance professional qualification or training Project Management qualification Project management experience of delivering within both formal and Agile environments Working knowledge of online/systems health and safety aspects and DDA including security best practice within software Understanding of legislative requirements e.g. PCI-DSS, Data Protection, electronic communications Significant experience with Team Foundation Service 4
