6 6 Wind Chill Chart Strong wind makes you feel colder than the real temperature. Use this chart to find the Wind Chill Index. The temperature is on the top and the wind speed is on the side. Find where they meet in the middle of the chart to get the wind chill. Te mperatur e in Fahrenheit Wind (mph) Wind chill is only for parts of your skin or head that are not covered. If you dress properly in layers, you won't feel much of a wind chill.

9 9 Blue Ice You need: blue food coloring water ice tray jar or glass Put water in the ice tray and add a few drops of blue coloring to it. Put it in a freezer to make blue ice cubes. After your ice is ready, fill the jar halfway with cool water and put it on a table. Take one of the cubes and gently place it in the jar. Watch what happens as the ice cube melts. Where does the ice go? Does the water get colder or warmer? How does the color of the water change?

10 10 Ice Water You need: a jar or glass water ice cubes a thermometer Fill the jar halfway with water and add a lot of ice cubes to it. Stick the thermometer in the water and read it. Place everything in the sun. Read the thermometer. Place it in a freezer for a while and then read the thermometer again. Take it out of the freezer, let all the ice melt and then read the thermometer about one hour later. What happens to the temperature? Do you see any changes? After all the ice melts what happens to the temperature?

11 11 You need: two pieces of paper a chair Floating Flakes Crumple one piece of paper into a ball. Leave the other piece of paper flat. Carefully stand on top of a strong chair, with the flat paper in one hand and the ball of paper in the other. Drop them both at the same time. Which one falls faster? Why does one piece of paper fall faster? Which piece would fall the way a snowflake falls?

12 12 Magic Balloon You need: Two two-liter plastic bottles One one-liter plastic bottle One balloon water ice cubes scissors Carefully cut the tops off of the two-liter bottles so that the smaller bottle can fit inside of them. Fill one of the two-liter bottles halfway with warm water. Fill the other two-liter bottle halfway with cold water and add a few ice cubes to it. Stretch the balloon to fit over the top of the empty one-liter bottle. Place the small bottle with the balloon on top in the warm water. What happens? Now take it out and place it in the cold ice water. What happens? Does the balloon change shape? How? Put it back in the warm water and then in the cold water. Does it do anything differently?

13 13 Fun Facts about Winter and Snow In very cold places, snow huts or igloos keep you warmer than the air is outside. All snowflakes start as a single ice crystal with six sides. You can have a blizzard even without snow falling, when the wind is strong enough to pick up snow and blow it around near the ground. No matter how low the wind chill is, if the air temperature is not below freezing, water will not freeze. Mittens keep your fingers warmer because they allow each finger to share heat with the others. Heavy winter snow can cause spring ice jams. That's when melting snow and ice jams up in rivers to cause floods. When a warm wind blows over snow and makes it melt and evaporate quickly we call that a "snow eater." A Nor'easter is a big winter storm that grows rapidly as it moves north along the east coast of the United States. In some parts of the world, it gets so cold that you can throw a cup of water into the air and the water will turn to ice before it hits the ground. Winter at the North Pole is not just cold, it's dark. There is no sunshine there for nearly six months.
