Its conservation is of least concern as there are many birds in healthy populations as well as an abundance of them in zoos. They were also known as the Rosy flamingo many years ago as the word flamingo comes from the Latin word for flame. They range from the Caribbean islands, the Yucatan peninsula and the Galapagos Islands. They are highly social birds that can live in groups of 1,000 s of individuals. Their habitat includes lagoons, mudflats and lakes. Their main predators could include jaguars, raccoons, birds of prey, margay and even humans. They are a deep pink/red/orange in color and have the brightest plumage of all flamingo species. They have long, pink legs with their knees (which are actually comparable to a human s ankle) being a slightly darker pink. They use their large downward curving beak to filter out their diet from the water, which may include insects, worms, crustaceans and even vegetation and algae. Their
tongue pumps 5-6 times per second pushing the water out of their beak. This large pink bill with a black tip also provides a loud, deep honking call similar to a goose. A unique characteristic about this type of flamingo is that both parents are able to produce a substance called crop milk that comes from their upper digestive tract. By producing this substance and regurgitating it, the flamingos are able to act as foster parents and feed any other chicks that may need nutrition. The female only produces one chalky white egg which is laid in a mud mound in shallow water. They hatch between 28 and 32 days gestation. As an adult, Caribbean flamingos can be between 3.9 to 4.6 feet in height and weigh 4.9 to 6.2 pounds, with the female being smaller than the male. Their wingspan can reach approximately 4.9 feet.
Name FANTASTIC FLAMINGOS STUDENT PAGE 2ND GRADE 1. There are 9 flamingos at one end of the exhibit and 8 flamingos at the other end. Give an addition problem to tell how many flamingos there are in all. Give the fact families for your problem. 2. Flamingos are birds that live in large groups. Look at the flamingos in the exhibit. Adult flamingos are a dark red or bright pink color. Baby flamingos are usually a lighter pink or even a gray color. Count the pink adult birds. Count the gray baby birds. Are there more, less or the same number of adults than baby birds? 3. Adult flamingos eat 30cc of food each day. Baby flamingos eat 25cc of food each day. How much more does the adult flamingos eat?
Name FANTASTIC FLAMINGOS STUDENT PAGE 3RD GRADE 1. Flamingos are very tall with long, skinny legs, but they do not weigh very much. If 5 of these birds weigh 5 pounds each, what is their total weight? 2. You feed 1/2 of the birds and your best friend feeds 2/4 of the birds. Did you feed the birds more than, less than or the same amount as your friend? 3. If you estimated that there are 46 birds in all, round 46 to the nearest tens. 4. If there are 35 birds, what is their total number of legs?
Name FANTASTIC FLAMINGOS STUDENT PAGE 4TH GRADE 1. The zoo keepers estimate a flamingo has 5,658 feathers. Round to the nearest hundred. Round to the nearest thousand. 2. There are 30 flamingos that need to be measured. If 1/3 of the birds are 4 feet tall and 1/2 of the remaining birds are 6 feet tall, how many birds do the keepers still need to measure? 3. The flamingos laid 30 eggs this year. 10 of the eggs have hatched so far. Calculate the fraction of eggs that have hatched. Calculate the fraction of eggs that have not hatched yet. Which fraction is larger?
FANTASTIC FLAMINGOS ANSWERS AWV: answers will vary Fantastic Flamingos 2nd Grade = 17, = 17; Fact families: = 17, = 17, 17 8 = 9, 17 9 = 8, etc. 2. AWV; should be more 3. 5cc 3rd Grade pounds 2. Same amount th Grade 1. 5,700; 6, /3; 2/3; 2/3
