3 The future wi be here sooner than you think Thirty years from now, in 2042, the 20 year ods of today wi be ceebrating their 50th birthday. This is the generation that grew up with ipods, tabet computers, super fast internet and text messaging. They, and everyone born prior to 1992, wi have joined an ever increasing number of peope ceebrating this miestone. In fact, the Austraian Bureau of Statistics estimates that by 2056, neary a quarter of Austraia s popuation wi be aged 65 or over, up from 14 percent today. Apia has spent the past 25 years heping Austraians aged over 50 protect the assets they have buit up over a ifetime, and we have seen a ot of changes in the way peope ive their ives during that time. We pan on being around to hep Austraia s over 50s for a ong time to come, so we wanted to understand one fundamenta question: What s next? What kind of homes wi peope be iving in? Wi cars sti be the dominant mode of transport? What technoogica advances can we expect? Wi retirement sti be an option? How wi peope afford the more than one hundred years they are predicted to ive for? Over severa days in May 2012, experts from a range of industries, waks of ife and from across Austraia came together to participate in a workshop in Sydney with the aim of gazing in to the future to answer these questions. They ooked at how six key areas might change over the next 30 years, each of which wi be the focus of a Future of Over 50s report: Home Transport Work City and community Technoogy Life, eisure and how to afford it Once a framework for the future of over 50s had been designed, we wanted to know what the future may actuay ook ike. Guy Luscombe, Head of Aged Design at one of Austraia s eading architectura firms, Rice Daubney was a part of the Future of Over 50s pane and payed a major roe in answering this question. Based on the outcomes of the workshop, Guy and his team deveoped visua representations of the future word that the expert pane created. The Future of Over 50s reports aim to buid a physica and practica vision of the way peope aged over 50 wi be iving their ives thirty years from now. Thankfuy, the vision created by our pane of experts is overwhemingy positive, so we hope the Future of Over 50s reports hep Austraians to face the future with enthusiasm and optimism, rather than trepidation. Medica, scientific and technoogica advancements have extended the average ife span we beyond 100 years od. Stressed Out Systems The word of 2042 is not entirey unrecognisabe from 2012, but it wi certainy be more competitive, faster paced and with a greater focus on the concerns of an ageing popuation. It is undoubtedy going to be a sight to see. However, this has put stress both on the environment, due to the increased resources required for a growing and ageing popuation, and on the individua s finances to sustain them through a onger ife. As a nation and a panet we have had to adopt more sustainabe ways of iving: recycing everything possibe and using our resources in a much more efficient manner. Making more with ess wi be the mantra of governments, organisations and individuas. Not So Super Retiring at 65 wi no onger be an option, with the pubic pension system bucking under the strain of miions of oder Austraians iving for decades onger than it was designed for. Superannuation savings wi need to be topped up for onger, if not constanty. In fact, retirement is ikey to be a thing of the past. Totay Wired Technoogy has changed the way Austraians ive entirey. In the word of 2042, homes, work, transport and eisure time have technoogy at their core. The entire word wi be easiy accessibe. But over 50s, ike most members of the society of 2042, wi need to make a concerted effort to ensure technoogy doesn t physicay isoate them from society. Economic Mighty Mouse Austraia wi sti be the ucky country. In 2042, we may ony be experiencing an echo of the once mighty mining boom, but it has positioned us we to take advantage of the rise of the economic superpowers of India and China. Our economy may be more service than resource oriented, but thankfuy retraining is easier than ever, with the word s great academic institutions easiy accessibe by the internet. This aows oder Austraians to ensure they can compete for work with the biions of new workers in the internationa job market. Heath Nuts In an ageing popuation, heath has become an obsession for individuas and the companies competing to improve and sustain it for those individuas. Extending quaity, not just ength, of ife wi be the focus. 4

A environmenta and technoogy systems working. 7:05AM With one touch on their Smart Gass bathroom mirror, a ive stream from their heathcare professiona tes them what they need to do that day to maximise their heath programme. Vita signs are monitored and dispayed, and appropriate morning stretches and exercises are suggested. 10:00AM After breakfast, John and Mary move into their ounge and office. John settes in to his Surround Chair, and commences his daiy Hoo- Conference with his coeague in the UK. Mary ogs in to her home office to compete a project for one of her five empoyers. 1:00PM John eaves to go to one of his empoyers offices for his monthy face to face catch up. Mary continues working from home and is served a nutritionay appropriate unch by her Home. 4:30PM The Smith s grandchidren come over to visit. Mary supervises them paying on the Smart Window. 8.45PM Mary catches up with work coeagues in America by video conference, whie John does some ast minute studying for his atest degree. 7:00AM Having determined the Smith s have had enough seep, Home decides to wake them up to the sound of soothing music, and by graduay increasing ighting. The Smart Gass windows in their bedroom become transparent. Their favourite TV shows, weather, finances and video messages are shown on the window. 7:45AM With their Home aready preparing their morning tea and coffee, John and Mary pace their PDAs on their Smart Kitchen Surface. Automaticay their daiy schedue, suggested menu for the day, news, job opportunities and unread and viewed messages appear. The Smiths prepare breakfast, consisting of the menu suggested by their refrigerator and heath professionas. 12:00PM Meet neighbours for unch at their oca cafe. 3:00PM John returns. The spare second bedroom wi doube as an office, where the over 50s of the future wi be abe to conference in to the networks of their empoyers, whether that be in Austraia or overseas. The home of 2042 wi be fuy sustainabe and environmentay friendy Whether it is the photovotaic system buit directy into the roof ties, the rainwater coection system or the grey water and waste recycing system instaed, over 50s in the future wi be we on the way to being fuy environmentay sustainabe. As the goba popuation cimbs towards 10 biion peope, Austraians have reaised they had to make more out of fewer resources. There is ikey to be common ground and faciities between dweings and neighbours Everybody needs good neighbours, and in 2042 that is especiay true for Austraia s over 50s. The density of Austraia s cities has greaty increased, eading to new ways of thinking of how Austraia s ageing popuation shoud be iving. Individua dweings centred around common gardens, in order to reduce the upkeep, are now the deveopment du jour. For those choosing to ive coser to the centre of cities, apartment iving, with apartment bocks incuding retai space, is common pace. 7

8 The Pane Over two days, Apia s Future of Over 50s Pane was tasked with buiding a future for Austraia s over 50s which, based on their expertise and experience, is both practica and possibe. The future seen in this report is a direct resut of the hard work done by this Pane, and we thank them for their time and commitment to this project. Guy Luscombe Head of Aged Design, Rice Daubney Guy has 25 years of architectura experience with over eight years focusing on seniors and aged care projects, and is committed to designing innovative iving spaces for the ageing popuation. He is currenty invoved in the peer review of the NSW Government Ageing and Disabiity Accommodation Design Guideines. Kaye Faick Pubisher of YOURLifeChoices website and Director of the Internationa Federation on Ageing Kaye has been the pubisher of YOURLifeChoices magazine, enews and website for the past tweve years. Aexander Giangrasso Aex is currenty studying a Bacheor of Information Technoogy (BiT), a schoarship course that incudes both study and fu time work. The youngest member on the pane, Aex brought a unique perspective as someone who grew up in a word aready dominated by sophisticated information technoogy. Marian McCormick Manager, Strategic Marketing & Insights, Suncorp Persona Insurance Marian is tasked with managing insights based decision making at Suncorp Persona Insurance, which operates insurers such as AAMI, Apia and GIO. With an extensive background in consumer research, Marian was abe to appy those insights to imagining the future of over 50s in Austraia. Beinda Whean Strategy and Business Panning Manager, Suncorp Persona Insurance As strategy manager for one of the eading insurance companies in Austraia, Beinda s roe is to ook at possibe futures and hep the business best adapt to it.
