Food and nutrition differentiate between a healthy and an unhealthy diet and appreciate the role of balance and moderation. examine the dietary needs of his/her own age group and other groups in society. explore some factors that influence the consumption of different food products. GETTING STARTED MENU SCREEN This is the menu screen. Click on Classroom Slides to begin the session or click on Extension Activities for some additional ideas. Print the Teacher s Notes for this session here by clicking on the Teacher s Notes button.

3 Taste Buds Notes SCREEN 1 There are lots of foods we can eat at breakfast time. This is an introductory screen showing some typical breakfast items. The idea of this screen, is to generate classroom discussion. Ask the children about the foods they normally have for breakfast, and the breakfast foods they like. Ask them if they have ever heard that breakfast is important, or the expression that Breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Ask them if they knew that the word means to break the fast. SCREEN 2 This is an animated cartoon of one of the Taste Buds characters called Mac. The cartoon deals with Mac and how his decision not to have breakfast impacts on his day. Mac finds himself low on energy and we see him arriving late for school because he hasn t got the energy to get out of bed and get there on time. Mac is falling asleep in class; he has trouble concentrating on his computer game and fails to reach the next level. With the help of the other Taste Buds characters, Mac realises that his problem is that he has been skipping breakfast. The Taste Buds characters tell him about the importance of having breakfast in the morning. Mac decides to have breakfast, and the next slide deals with the results of his choice of breakfast. Play the animation and afterwards discuss what you have seen and learned about eating breakfast.

4 Taste Buds Notes SCREEN 3 This screen follows on from the Mac s breakfast animation. Mac has decided to have breakfast, and he has been given three options. They are: Option 1: Sparky the dog s breakfast Mac does not eat this. He is late for school again and feeling tired. Option 2: A chocolate bar and fiy drink Mac feels diy, then tired later in the day. Option 3: A bowl of cereal and fruit juice Mac feels great and does well in his computer game. Click on an option and allow the animation to run. Play through each of the three options to see what happens to Mac. Discuss the outcomes and ask the class to suggest the best breakfast option. SCREEN 4 Lots of different foods can be eaten for breakfast. People around the world eat different foods for breakfast. The screen shows empty plates with the flags of some countries. At the top of the screen are breakfast foods commonly eaten in these countries. The idea is to drag the correct food item to the correct country plate. A correct choice snaps onto the plate, an incorrect choice returns to its original position. Invite the children to get involved by asking them to try to guess which country goes with each breakfast. Ask the children if they have ever eaten any different foods for breakfast when they have been in another country on holidays or encourage children of different nationalities in your classroom to talk about what they would typically eat for breakfast in their native country.

6 Taste Buds Extension Activities activity 1 taste buds breakfast classroom survey This screen allows the results of a class breakfast survey to be entered and produces a bar chart of the results. Carry out a class survey of favourite breakfast foods. Record the top most popular foods on the main screen. Then click the Results button to see them displayed as a bar chart. This can be printed off and displayed on the classroom wall. activity 2 design a boosting breakfast poster The screen shows a sample poster design. The idea is that the class designs a poster on the theme of having a healthy breakfast like the one shown. There are lots of options for designing the poster, let the children use their imagination. It can be drawn or painted or the children could use photographs on their poster. HOMEWORK ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS 1: Ask the children to tell their parent/guardian all that they saw in the video about Mac and how eating breakfast helped him throughout the day. 2: Ask the children to work with their parent/guardian on suggestions for a boosting breakfast. 3: Tell the class to ask their parent/guardian all about what they used to eat for breakfast when they were children. 4: Ask the children from other countries in your class what sort of foods would be typically eaten for breakfast in their home country.
