2 HOMILY REFLECTION SHEETS We come to know Jesus through the Scriptures. If we are to live out the Word of God we need to reflect on what these words mean to us. Each candidate must write a reflection on the Gospel and Homily for FOUR Sunday Masses during the year. One per month during November, December, January and February. These Mass sheets should be returned to your teachers as they are completed. Suggestions on how to write these papers: Bring a piece of paper with you to church and write down some thoughts or words you hear in the Gospel and homily. Write down the Scripture reference (e.g. Luke 5:1-5) so you can refer back to it when you are writing the paper. Discuss what you heard and wrote down on the way home in the car, asking everyone to participate. Ask yourself and your family what the Scripture and Homily have to do with your life today. When you get home, write your reflection on the Mass sheet while it is fresh in your mind. Remember, this is a reflection paper; what you write is what you feel the Scripture is saying to YOU at this moment in your life s journey.

8 Saint Report To be completed in class the weeks of 12/12 & presented to the class the week of 12/19. Please bring all appropriate materials to class with you these two week. Each project should be on poster board. When selecting a confirmation name, designate the specific person (e, g., Thomas the Apostle, Thomas of Aquinas). The use of your baptismal name, if already after a Saint, can serve to further emphasize the three-fold process of Christian initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The name chosen must be a Blessed or canonized Christian saint. A canonized Christian Saint is a man or a woman who has displayed heroic virtue and has been recognized by the Church. During Confirmation preparation time, candidates should research their baptismal name or the new Saint's name they have chosen. After you have selected the Saint you would like to be named after (and who will continue to pray for you), type a one page report about the Saint's life. Include the following topics in your project: Who is the saint? (When and where did he or she live, family life, job, etc) What have you learned about this Saint through your research? Why did you select this Saint to represent your faith journey? How is this person a good role model for you to follow as a confirmed Catholic? Include the resources from which you obtained your information (web site, book, etc.). There are numerous online resources for learning about the lives of Saints. Here are a few: Each of these sites has a searchable index of saints. Some can be viewed by calendar, alphabetically, or by what they are a patron of. Each has a short description of that saint. If you have any questions or need additional resources or suggestions, please ask!

9 CONFIRMATION COMMUNITY SERVICE Due week of March 13, 2017 Guidelines for Service Service is based on the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and, most of all, on the example of Christ, who came to serve. When giving service, the following points should be considered: Your service is not just a job to be done. It is selflessly and lovingly helping those in need. You should reflect on how your service project is helping you take on the mind and heart of Christ, fulfill the needs of others and build up the Christian community. The giving of service should continue after your Confirmation and all through your life. Below are listed suggestions of ways in which you can serve others selflessly (no remuneration). We require that you complete a minimum of TEN HOURS of service, 2 to the St. James Parish and 8 to the wider community. Although all can be for the parish if your so desire. 1. Visit the elderly in senior citizen residences or homes. 2. Perform volunteer work in your neighborhood, school or church. 3. Help a handicapped person or support the family of a handicapped child by playing with or caring for the child. 4. Participate in a walk-a-thon to support your favorite charity. 5. Contribute your services to the local library. 6. Initiate a clean-up campaign in a local playground, street, park, etc. 7. Help a teacher before or after school. 8. Visit with and help to take care of someone who is sick. 9. Care for lawns, rake leaves or clear the snow for elderly or sick neighbors. 10. Do some service for senior citizens or shut-ins in your neighborhood by shopping, gardening or housekeeping. 11. Contribute your services to the Parish. (Peanut Butter and Jelly gang - we will send memos home with opportunities). 12. Other must be approved by the.
