2 The TSCS Safety, Health & Accessibility Team values the safety of its employees, volunteers, contractors and clients. A safe work environment can not be accomplished by a single person. It is the responsibility of all TSCS employees to follow all work related policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment is maintained. Any incidents must be reported and documented prompted. THINK SAFETY FIRST! 2

4 Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) OSHA is a part of the United States Department of Labor The mission of OSHA is to save lives, prevent injuries and protect the health of America's workers. To accomplish this, federal and state governments must work in partnership with the more than 100 million working men and women and their six and a half million employers who are covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of

5 Employee Work Area Each employee is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work area. Employees are expected to report any broken or malfunctioning equipment or safety hazards to their supervisor. Food and beverages are to be kept in designated lunch areas only. Employees are to remove pop bottles, containers and articles of personal belonging at the end of their work shift. 5

6 Property Security Employees are responsible for assisting in maintaining the security of the facility and vehicle for the safety of themselves and the clients. Employees will be required to return keys issued for use on secured gates, doors, desks, file cabinets vehicles or other agency equipment when the nature of their job changes or when their employment is terminated, prior to the release of their final paycheck. The unauthorized duplication of keys will be considered a breach of TSCS security and will subject the employee to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal. 6

7 Infection Control TSCS will make efforts to protect all individuals from transmissions of blood-borne diseases and comply with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Regulations to limit occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). All Program Staff are to familiarize themselves with their departmental policy and procedure regarding infection control. Ensure to maintain spill kits in programs/homes. Apply universal precaution techniques to all persons equally. Maintain knowledge of and observe infection control/universal precaution procedures. Report all incidents of contact exposure to blood/body fluids to supervisor and complete and incident report. Consider that human blood and secretions are potentially infectious. 7

8 Vehicle Safety All use of company vehicles must be documented in the vehicle log. Seat belts must be worn at all times by all passengers while in the vehicle. Drivers of agency vehicles must have a valid Michigan driver s license and must follow all laws of operating a vehicle on public and private access areas. Any employee whose driving privileges have been restricted or classified as Do Not Consider for Driver Duty in accordance with TSCS policy, may not drive agency vehicles nor can they transport clients in their own personal vehicles. Employees are required to notify TSCS Administration within 5 days if their license has been revoked or restricted for any reason. Smoking is not permitted in any agency vehicle at any time. 8

9 Vehicle Safety (cont.) Vehicle inspection reports must be completed as mandated. Any maintenance problems with the vehicle must be reported immediately to the department supervisor. A police report, claim incident report and if necessary, an Incident, Accident, Illness, Death or Arrest Report must be filed for all accidents and reported to the department supervisor and other appropriate parties immediately. Medical attention must be sought for passengers or drivers as outlined in the TSCS Vehicle Safety Program. Any traffic violations received while driving on company business must be reported to the TSCS Administration immediately. Drivers are not permitted to use cell phones while driving. Always pull over when using cell phones. 9

10 Falls In The Workplace Falls are the most common accident in the workplace and account for the highest number of disabling injuries. Most falls are preventable by following tips these tips: Be sure pathway is clear before you walk. Close drawers completely after each use. Avoid excessive bending, twisting and leaning. Secure cords and wires away from walkways. Never use a chair for climbing. Clean up spills immediately. Pick up objects co-workers may have left on the floor. Report loose/damaged carpet or flooring. Never carry anything that obscures your vision. Wear appropriate shoes with nonslip soles. 10

11 Storing Materials Office supplies must be properly stored to prevent possible injuries and fire hazards. Keep these tips in mind when storing office supplies: Don t store boxes, papers or other items on top of lockers or file cabinets. Store heavy objects on lower shelves. Try to store items inside cabinets, files or lockers. Do not stack items in aisles, corners or passageways. Do not obstruct fire equipment, extinguishers, fire door exits, sprinkler heads, etc. with office items. 11

12 Fire Safety Learn location of all exits. Know more than one exit in case the first route is blocked by fire or debris. Know how to use the fire extinguisher. Keep paper and other flammable materials away from equipment that produces heat (copiers, printers, coffee makers, etc.) Keep extension cords clear of doorways or from where they can be stepped on. Properly store combustible materials. Hold fire drills on a regular schedule. Turn off equipment at the end of the day. 12

13 Hazard Communication Standard The Hazard Communication Standard helps to make information available to employers and employees about potential hazards, recommended precautions and help to reduce illnesses and injuries caused by chemicals. 13

14 Hazard Communication Standard (cont.) Chemical manufacturers and importers must provide known hazard information to employers by means of labels on containers and material safety data sheets (MSDS s) Employers must provide MSDS s and advise staff of the location of MSDS s. Employers must have a written plan that describes how the standard is implemented in the facility. 14
