The rate includes breakfast. The local organizer has reserved a block of one-bed rooms (for use of up to two persons) from the night of October 5th to the morning of October 9th, so you do not have to reserve a room at the hotel by yourself. Note that because autumn in Kyoto attracts tourists the most, it is extremely difficult to make hotel arrangements by yourself. All you have to do is to fill out the following hotel reservation form and return to Tetsuya Takemi ( npoms3@storm.dpri.kyoto-u.ac.jp) by August 25th, Monday 1200 UTC, September 4 th, Thursday (extended). 4 Visa Information Foreign visitors are required to obtain a visa before entering Japan except for from countries with visa-waiver programs with Japan. You can apply a visa at the embassy or the consulate of Japan in your country with an authorized invitation letter to NPOMS-3. Please ask the embassy/consulate of Japan or your local travel agents in your country for details. 5 Transportation from the airports to Kyoto Station and the hotel Kansai International Airport (KIX) Kansai International Airport (KIX) is the nearest international airport to Kyoto. Kansai International Airport is located in Osaka Prefecture, and there are many international flights and connecting flights within Japan. There are a couple of transportations between Kansai International Airport and Kyoto Station: railways, limousine buses, and taxis. Limousine buses are convenient and cost-effective to Kyoto Station. It takes about 85 minutes from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto Station. The bus stop is at the Hachijoguchi exit of Kyoto Station, where is convenient to reach Roynet Hotel (5 minutes walk). The fare is 2,550 JPY for one-way ticket, and is 4,180 JPY for round-trip ticket. West Japan Railway Company (JR) operates a service from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto Station by limited express called Haruka. It takes about 90 minutes. The fare is 3,570 JPY (oneway trip). The map of Kyoto Station and its surroundings is found at: Useful web sites: Kansai International Airport: Kansai Airport Limousine bus: West Japan Railway Company: Osaka/Itami Airport (ITM) Osaka/Itami Airport (ITM) is an airport for domestic flights in Japan. If you arrive in Japan at other international airports (for example, Tokyo/Narita International Airport), you will use a connecting flight to Kansai International Airport or Osaka/Itami Airport. Limousine bus service is the most convenient and cost-effective from Osaka Airport to Kyoto Station. The bus stop of Kyoto Station is located near the Kyoto Station Hachijoguchi exit, the same with the bus stop from Kansai International Airport. It takes about 55 minutes from the airport

6 to Kyoto Station, and the fare is 1,310 JPY (one-way ticket). 7 Access from Kyoto Station to Roynet Hotel Kyoto Station Hachijoguchi East Exit is the nearest exit of Kyoto Station to Roynet Hotel. The bus stop of the limousine buses is also located near Hachijoguchi East Exit. It takes about 5 minutes by walk from the bus stop or the East Exit to Roynet Hotel. 8 The average temperature in Kyoto in October is 17.8 degrees Celsius, with daily maximum being 22.9 degrees and daily minimum being 13.6 degrees. The weather of autumn in Kyoto is very mild and comfortable, but there are sometimes rainy days due to fronts or typhoons. Autumn is the best season to visit Kyoto, which attracts a lot of tourists from all over the world. Time The local standard time in Japan is 9 hours plus UTC. There is no summer time. Currency Currency in Japan is Japanese Yen (JPY). The exchange rates between JPY and US dollar and between JPY and Euro (as of August 1st) are: 100 JPY = USD 100 JPY = EUR You can exchange from your country s currency to Japanese Yen at money exchange counters at Kansai International Airport or at banks in Kyoto. It is recommended that you should exchange to JPY at the airport, because the opening hour of regular banks outside international airports is from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. You can also exchange to JPY at local money exchanges in Kyoto (although the rate is not good). Electricity The voltage in Japan is 100 Volt, which is different from North America (120V), Central Europe (230V) and most other regions of the world. Japanese electrical plugs have two, non-polarized pins, as shown below. It is recommended to bring a plug adaptor from your country.

9 City of Kyoto, and City of Uji Kyoto City is the old capital of Japan (from 794 AD to 1868 AD). Kyoto is one of the best tourists destinations in the world. In addition to the renowned touristic place, the population of Kyoto City is about 1,500,000, and the activities of industry and economics are very high. Uji City is located to the south of Kyoto City. This city also has a long history of more than 1,000 years, and was famous for an area of villas for noble people in Kyoto City. Uji City has the Byodoin temple, a World Heritage, and is well known for Japanese tea production.
